He was very happy for us, and gave me some info I thought I'd pass along to the group: In a message dated 98-06-27 09:41:26 EDT, you write: << If Rissa "crashes" and requires a transfusion you might have your veterinarina check out the new blood replacement product on the market. It is presently approved for dogs but there may be some ongoing work by the company in cats. Good luck. M. W. Myers, D.V.M. >> Has anyone heard of this yet? We adopted both our cats while we lived in DC, Lai-Tai from Lend-A-Paw (she's negative) and Rissa-Tai from the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (she's positive). I had also heard that the DC area has a FeLV epidemic, so be careful! Jim, since this seems to be something there is a lot of concern about, will the newer treatments you have listed at your site also work for these other kitties? Hopefully, we'll never have to find out, but just in case.... Rissa-Tai was on antibiotics and taking a total of about four pills a day. It was very stressful for her. Antibiotics can irritate their tummies. She isn't a puker, but between the antibiotics and all the pillings, she was throwing up a lot. We switched everything to liquid or injections (no pills), and she pulled through fairly quickly, and the vomiting stopped. I think just getting off the stress of the pillings and the lack of vomiting helped her mindset as well. Is this a possibility for Nikita? That is what happened to Ghost in December - she just stopped eating, and slowly stopped even trying to eat, and the day I'd made the appointment for her, she had died while I was at work. There are things you can do to kick-start an appetite - valium, megace, force-feeding even sometimes works - but only you know your cat well enough to know if it's time to fight, or time to let go... Less expensive, and they keep when refrigerated. Warning - unless you are familiar with doing this, it's a bit scary at first - but once you get the hang of it, it's fairly easy. Have the vet show you how, and then let you try it while s/he is watching. If not, *PLEASE*, *PLEASE* check the ingredient list! Some of the ingredients in human medications are toxic to cats. A lot of the OTC stomach settlers have acetaminophen in them. Aspirin in very small quanities is okay for cats - but only in carefully controlled situations. I know Kaopectate (for diarrhea) is okay - Pepto Bismol is not (I think that the Bismuth is also toxic). If the Mylanta was not recommended by the vet - call them immediately and ask if it's okay for cats! All the cats love yoghurt. I get the large size of Nancy's or the Russian yoghurt - has basically milk and yoghurt cultures and that's it. I finally got the information about the "strange behavior" (kitty's back spasms, etc) that I have promised to send to you earlier. Unfortunately I lost your e-mail addresses...yuck! Anyway, please reposnd to me by private e-mail and you'll hear from me ASAP. Judy, I think I read in one of your posts that you will be visiting Seattle in the near future. The vet that has worked with my friend's kitty is in Seattle and if you like I will provide you with her name and phone number should you want to talk to her while you are in the area! It seems they gave it a go with humans. May still be working on it. If memory serves tho, it is a volume expander but whether it was capable of carrying O2....It seems it didn't do that. Marylyn, have you had any news on it? The big thing when I was working in the hospital was "catching" blood that a patient was bleeding out, washing it thru a filter and putting it back in. That eliminated the fear of reaction.(and HIV) I'll see what I can find out about the synthetic blood. barb ---------------------------------------- From: GinaTex@aol.com Date sent: Sun, 28 Jun 1998 09:45:55 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Nikita Update Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi Charlie Sorry to hear that Nikita is not feeling well. When our Rubin got really ill with vomiting and diarhea the vet gave him fluids, He pulled through tremendously with that. 5 years ago when he first became ill, we had force fed him baby food, and very bland cat food. He was also on valium for a year for his 1 seizure he had plus for the stress he was under. The valium was also used to boost his appetite. Hang in there it is amazing how our little babies can pull thru. I would call the vet on that right away. I do know that they can take Kaepectate 1 cc per body weight. Our cats seem to like the cherry flavored one over the regular one Gina ---------------------------------------- From: Newtanator@aol.com Date sent: Sun, 28 Jun 1998 10:24:17 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Nikita Update Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Kathy, Acidopholus is used to replace bacteria in the intestines when the cat has diarrhea. I'm not sure what those bacteria would do to the antibiotic. It might destroy it if given together. Best to separate them by a few hours I think. barb ---------------------------------------- Date sent: Sun, 28 Jun 1998 08:27:37 -0400 To: felvtalk@MailingList.net From: cjk Subject: Re: Nikita Update Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi Pam - No I took him off the antibiotics the vet gave me - since after a few days last week his temp returned to normal - so for now I think something to quiet his stomach ( I did have some Mylanta at home and I gave him some with the dropper did not seem to mind it) I have been giving him lots of water with an oversized baby dropper and later on this morning I will try the nutriment again. Right know he is in a chair in front of the window with a cool breeze blowing on him seems to like the view. - Charlie ---------------------------------------- From: meowmama@bellsouth.net Date sent: Sun, 28 Jun 1998 09:52:24 -0400 To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Nikita Update Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net barb, How about adding some acidopholus when giving antibiotics - that seems to help here to keep the tummy from getting upset?
