It gets so hard sometimes, watching them get weaker and weaker. Have you tried something like tagamet or zantac for the tummy? Water is the most important thing. Maybe some plain water. You might have to have the vet re-hydrate him for you under the skin. Sometimes that alone is a good pick me up for the cat. Good luck and keep us up to date on how things are going. barb ---------------------------------------- Date sent: Sat, 27 Jun 1998 18:38:16 -0500 (CDT) From: "Nancy A. Now I understand who Hershey is and all the rest. I am sorry for your loss and the possibility (or not) of Hershey being FIP+. I know how awful that disease is. I had a kitty a few years back whom they think had the dry form of FIP (which is not as bad). If you'd like to send me your address privately, I'll be happy to send you a copy of the article. I found the list when I was exploring the internet and came across James Wilson's "Newer Methods" article. It was one of the best things that has ever happened to me. I still have one sick kitty, Jake, who is also FIV+. In general he is doing okay, although in lowering his level of prednisone (he started out on 5mg. daily last October and we had him weaned to 2.5mg. every 5 days) this last time, his platelets were borderline. We had to increase the prednisone to 5mg. every 5 days (still not too high a dosage) and I have started him on DMG and ambrotose. I still have hopes that he can be weaned off, however, I may just be dreaming. I know FIV is a progressive disease. Jake is also on Interferon and Immunoregulin. A couple weeks ago I freaked when Jake was going through a lessening of appetite and having a fit when I tried to pill him. I really thought this was the beginning of the end. I think it was Susan who suggested I have a talk with him, and believe it or not, with the help of an appetite stimulant, he seems less stressed at pilling time and seems to be eating better. Here's hoping. Anyway, Debby, my hands applaud you for all your endeavors to keep your kitties safe. You and yours are in my thoughts. I hope that Hershey will be well. I'm new to the list as you may know and just noticed you're in Rhode Island! I'm now in the Wash.,D.C. area but I'm originally from R.I. and still have a lot of family up there. Just curious what city you live in and yes......I certainly remember the weather up there! Date sent: Sat, 27 Jun 1998 17:34:49 -0700 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net I was reading the mail and you came across my mind. I know that you are having problems with Jake. Are you giving Jake the immunoregulin yourself? If so, when he becomes very sick......to you, give him an injection. I give Stinker up to two injections a week when Stinker is very ill. I feel that is what has kept him alive all of this time. His birthday for three years will be in August. I didn't think he would be alive in 1998! This site has kept him going and going and going!:O) You hang in there cause they can really fool you.:) They will be dying one moment and the next they will be just fine. I KNOW! Don't give up on Jake, even though sometimes you feel like it is the end. A while back ago I would be dressed and ready to take in Stinker to be put to sleep but the "little Stinker" would come around the next day or so.:) So, what I am trying to say is to relax a little and get use to the tactics that they use.:) Relax and know that every little set back isn't the end of the world. It has taken me a long time to get to this point so I can tell you this with confidence. Just love your kitty each day and tell him how much you love him and know how much he loves you!!!...............Lynn(Stinker) ---------------------------------------- Date sent: Sat, 27 Jun 1998 20:44:42 -0400 (EDT) From: Charles Klaus To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Nikita Update Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net My Nikita is growing weaker by the day He is unable to eat without throwing it up. Nothing short of a miracle will save him know - I did have one felv cat a number of years ago that reached this stage and was convulsing and was just about written of and came out of it to live for over 10 years. It hard to know just what to do at this point one thing he is not in horrible pain at least there is no evidence of it - so perhaps he will pass on somewhat peaceably Charlie ---------------------------------------- From: "Lynn or Josiah Stickels" To: "felvtalk" Subject: Nancy...........FIP? Date sent: Sat, 27 Jun 1998 17:48:47 -0700 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net You sure are trying to be in alot of trouble!:) As much as I have read and researched, the FIP test isn't that reliable. You need to sit back and take a breath and hang in there!!! I know exactly how you are feeling. What I can say is just don't let it get you down. Keep up with your love for your kitty and he will surprise you in how well he can do. I know it gets very discouraging, Nancy, but you have to keep in mind how much this kitty means to you and how much you mean to him. They can become the "world" to you, I know. Just don't give up until you of course will know................Lynn(Stinker) ---------------------------------------- From: "Claude Horstmann" To: Subject: Nikita Update Date sent: Sat, 27 Jun 1998 21:05:08 -0400 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Oh Charlie, I am so sorry that you and Nikita are in such dire place tonight. What does the Vet say, esp about the vomiting ? Liquid intake at this point is far more imp than food... Can you get chicken broth into the baby ? Using a syringe ? Dehydration can be worsening his chances for pulling through.. Chicken broth, or Vanilla Ensure Plus, or Pedialyte.... some form of liquid in small and frequent doses.. and how hot is it where you are ? Keep him cool.. Awrgh.... you're in my thoughts and prayers, whatever happens. ..marilyn.. ---------------------------------------- From: "Lynn or Josiah Stickels" To: "felvtalk" Subject: Nikita........ Date sent: Sat, 27 Jun 1998 18:06:13 -0700 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi! I just read your note about Nikita. I have been keeping up with his(hers) progress. What are you feeding her? How often do you feed her. If I were you, I would start out with a little canned baby food(chicken or turkey). Just a little bit at a time! You mix it with a little water and feed it with an eyedropper. DON'T GET DISCOURAGED! This will pass. Just try and get as much food in her as you can, not a whole lot at a time. My Stinker was so very sick at Christmas time. I fed him with an eyedropper every two hours. I fed him A/D cat food mixed with a little water. A/D catfood you get from your vet. It is a concentrated food for sickly animals. You might want to ask your vet. My Stinker almost lives on it. He cannot eat all that well cause of the ginivitis that the leukemia has caused. Anyway, do not give up. These leukemia kitties are much tougher than we give them credit for. Nikita needs to eat, every day and enough to sustain him. That is the most important thing right now! Get that nurishment in him NOW! Try just a little every few hours. They cannot live without it! You must sustain their life now while they are sick. DO IT!!! ---------------------------------------- From: "Lynn or Josiah Stickels" To: "felvtalk" Subject: Nicita Date sent: Sat, 27 Jun 1998 18:38:44 -0700 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net I just remembered that my vet gave Stinker an injection of fluids when he was really down. It isn't all that stressful and it sure does help. They just put a needle under the skin and put fluids in her body. This doesn't take long and it sure helps alot!!! Keep up your good work. Nicita will make it if you keep fighting!!!.............Lynn(Stinker) ---------------------------------------- Date sent: Sat, 27 Jun 1998 22:45:29 -0500 (CDT) From: "Nancy A. But I don't know where you got the idea Jake has FIP. Debby is the one who is afraid that Hershey has FIP. Jake has FIV. Anyways, thanks again. Jake is doing real well at this time and as you know, we all can only take one day at a time. Incidentally, how is the little Stinker doing on the Elavil? What about Reglan? The most important thing right now is fluids. Perhaps your vet can show you about Ringers Lactate. Are you familiar with it. It is a fairly easy way to get water into your cat. Perhaps a little tuna fish juice. I know you've had hard times before with another cat or cats so you may not want to give up yet or at least try to make it as painless as possible for Nikita. Charlie, I know the pain you're experiencing. I know it's awful, but hang in there. You just never know. If I can help you out in any way, let me know. That's what we're here for.
