There's also a section on felv in R. Pitcairn's _Natural Health for Cats and Dogs_. Pitcairn, Frazier, Stein (Natural Healing for Dogs & Cats) among many another authors, all emphasize that good nutrition is the basis for strengthening the immune system to help the body fight viruses like felv. If you are able try to get Grey on a quality diet--all these authors recommend home-made, raw meat diets, but if you decide to go in that direction, you should definitely pick up one of the books above (amazon.com carries all of these books) for directions and recipes because it is crucial that Grey get a balanced diet etc. Here is a website w/ some other homemade, raw meat recipes etc. http://www.fatpet.com/elvessa/natural.htm#Coat According to these authors, if you can't go quality-homemade (w/ balanced ratios of meat, grain & vegies) try to feed Grey a food w/out artificial preservatives. Many on the list supplement their cats' diets w/ vitamins & minerals. I use Frazier's vita-mineral mix as a regular supplement (for any cat, + or -). Specifically for felv, Pitcairn (p. 273) recommends Vitamin C; I'll just copy this from a previous post: "Vitamin C can be very helpful for cats with this disease [FeLV]; give 250 milligrams twice a day. Often sodium ascorbate, the salt form of vitamin C (ascorbic acid), is best tolerated. Add the powder to food or, if necessary, dissolve it in water or broth and give it a with a syringe." It also looks like Ambrotose (talk to Linda P.)or aloe vera might be helpful--You might want to check out Steve L's website for a tonic (aloe vera, wild yams..a few other ingredients) he gave his felv+ cat, Chloe. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Ranch/6167/ I'm just now learning about herbs (a complex subject), so I can't give you many tips there (I like Cheri G's sug. about Echinacea); however, if you know how to use herbs, Stein has a section in her book on this w/ some applicable references to felv. Of course, if you're just going for an immune booster, she has stuff on that, too. Susan ---------------------------------------- Date sent: Thu, 25 Jun 1998 09:21:18 -0500 (CDT) From: "Nancy A. Ninja has been on phenobarbital for a week tomorrow and we are going in to check her liver function to make sure the dosage is OK for her little body. I haven't seen any side effects and the seizures seem to be back under control. The AC has been on all week and now it looks like we won't get any relief until next Tuesday or Wednesday:-( I have sinus problems and it is REALLY hard to breathe right now. Luckily, Ninja doesn't have to go out in this sauna; she gets to loll around the apartment in the nice cool AC. We are also going to test for toxo because if it is positive, we can treat that!!! If it's negative, then the meningioma looks like the more likely cause of her seizures. Here's hoping for a positive toxo result!! She has been so chipper this week; playing every day and talking like she used to. I think it's because it's her 'on' week for interferon. That and the AC!! Wish us luck w/ the results!! My cats are feeling pretty good this week, too, because of the AC and Interferon. Today is their last day this week on Interferon so I can expect some to be a little less active in the coming week. Some vets are using Interferon now to treat chronic URI with good results. I have been using it on one of my negative cats with chronic URI and he's much better. Anyway, good luck with the tests and I'm hoping for the best! To find out if your cat will benefit from Epogen, you need to have a blood test run. That test is called an Erythropoietin Level. The Un. of Pennsylvania lab, connected to the small animal research/clinic runs it. It costs $75, but in view of how much the drug costs, it is worth it to find out if it will help. I have two phone numbers for them. 1-215-898-3375 and 1-215-898-8880. What this test does is check the level of the hormone Erythropoietin, which is produced by the kidneys when they sense the blood count is low. The kidneys are very anemia sensitive which is why when people have kidney failure, they get anemic. The kidneys no longer put out this hormone. However, if the level of that hormone is already high and the bone marrow and red blood cell producing components in the body are still not producing RBC's, then the problem is probably in the bone marrow. I have the Name Dr. Gieger, written down, but the Dr. that returned my call, had an accent, Indian maybe. But she was very nice and helpful and said they run the test a lot and use Epogen quite a bit. It is a wonderful, but somewhat expensive drug that can save lives, but only if the lack of that hormone is the problem. If you or anyone else has any questions, don't hesitate to ask. If you decide to have the test run, I would have your vet call them and get instructions on how much blood they need and where to send it. barb ---------------------------------------- To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Date sent: Thu, 25 Jun 1998 20:11:47 -0400 Subject: Keigan From: naohalloran@juno.com (Naomi J O'Halloran) Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi everyone, Well, Keigan went to the vet today. He still tested positive, and of course I was disappointed, but I expected it, so I'm ok. He was a very naughty boy while he was there, and scratched all of us up. We have to muzzle him just to give him his shots! I felt so bad for him. He hated getting blood taken, and did everything he could to let us know. He sure is one strong kitty. He weights 12 1/4 pounds now, and I'm very proud of him. He's up another half a pound from the last time he was in. Every time I bring him in, he's up another half a pound. I just figure, and the vet agrees, that it's better for him to be a bit on the hefty side in case he ever gets sick. The chemistry profile came back perfectly normal, and the cbc should be in from the lab by Saturday. The vet says that if he didn't know any different, he'd say he's a perfectly healthy cat. Keigan stayed pretty grumpy the rest of the time that we were there, but we just came home from work, and he was so happy to see the dog and his food dish, and now he's walking around purring as usual! Thanks to everyone for hoping for us. I'll let you know what the cbc says when it comes in on Sat. I'm covering for someone, so I'll be there and be able to see it as soon as we get it. Hi, Debby, here's one response I've received. You might need to get a marked (for ml or ccs) dropper if you use the liquid form--I've noticed that many of the herbs in tincture (mixed w/ liquid) have unmarked droppers. But if the dry form works, great. Susan In a message dated 6/23/98 8:17:04 PM Eastern Daylight Time, katseven@pcsia.com writes: << Have any of you tried Echin. and if so did you use the liquid form, and of course how much did you give? >> I have used echinacea off and on for years with my cats. Just remember, it's an immune stimulant and should only be used for 10-14 days at a time, then take 5-7 days off, then back on, etc. It won't hurt to do it continuously, but since it just stimulates, it won't be effective after that length of time. So it's a waste. I have used the capsules in the food. A good dosage would be one capsule daily. If you're using the extract, use .5 ml once per day. Elaine Crews, N.D.
