From: naohalloran@juno.com (Naomi J O'Halloran) Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hello everyone, I just want to say hello to everyone and apologize for my slacking with the email lately. I've been keeping up with what's going on with everyone, but haven't really had the chance to write back as often as I would like to. I've only had a chance to check my email about once a week lately, so I end up with what seems like a million messages to read through. But enough excuses. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you even if I don't let you know they are as often as I should. Now I just have one thing to ask of all of you. Keigan is due for his yearly vaccines, so I am taking him into work with me on Thursday to get them done. I am also going to run a cbc and a full chemistry profile on him to see if all of his levels are normal and everything is ok with him. And, last but not least, since it has been a little over 3 months since he and Moira first tested positive and this all began for us, I am having him retested for felv. Needless to say, I am hoping and praying for a miracle, and constantly telling myself that it's impossible. It all depends on how long it was before she became sick and they were tested that he actually contracted it from her. If it wasn't very long, then there's a chance he fought it off. He is, after all, young and strong. But I know that I shouldn't even bother getting my hopes up or even thinking about it, and now I've dragged all of you into it, and I'm very sorry. I was planning on just waiting until afterwards to tell you about it. But there's no one else who would really understand how unwillingly hopeful I am, so I can't help telling you. So, please think of us on Thursday, and I'll let you know how everything went when I get home that night. Thank you all so much for listening to me babble on.:-) Love you! When she was on the Interferon for the seven days on seven off or daily, she suffered from a very common side effect, depression. Once we went to the every third day, her mood lifted. Hope this helps. My vet keeps shrimp, sardines, and tuna in the office for cats that won't eat. Unfortunately, this usually means the cheaper cat food. It has less nutrition, but the cats seem to like it better - and it's better than not eating at all. Rissa loves Friskies canned. Also, Nutrical has been discussed frequently on the list about having a chemical in it that may be harmful, but it is an excellent source of additional nutrition for the cats, and sometimes they wil eat that when nothing else will work. There's another vitamin gel that works the same way but I can't remember the name, Nutravite or something. Also, is Nikita on Pet-Tinic? It's a liquid supplement that helps the anemia. It sounds like Lefty will be fine with your mother-in-law looking after him while you're away. You're being such a wonderful mommy to him. It's so comforting to know that there are people like you and everyone else on this list that will do anything that they possibly can for their beloved friends. Sometimes I want to steal the pets away from the people who come into the vet where I work and act like it would kill them to spend one extra penny on their pet. It's really horrible when we know that it's something really serious and there's nothing we can do about it because the people don't care enough to. And it really makes me sick because it's always the people that I know have the money to do it!!! But anyway...everyone on this list is so wonderful. I wish we could all have a great big group hug! Sorry for going on and on like that:-) As for Jodi, it sounds like she really needs a wonderful home like yours. Although it may be a risk for her, I think it would be much better than being tortured by a dog for the rest of her life. I'll be thinking of you. It sounds like you are doing all the right things with your Nikita. I'm sorry you are having trouble getting him to eat. When it gets like that, you should give him anything you can think of that might get him to eat. Spoil him like crazy and give him anything he wants. I know there's been a debate about the sodium benzoate preservative in it, but you might want to try a paste that you can get from you vet called Nutrical. I think there's something similar to it that you can get from the pet store also. If he won't eat his regular food, this will help to make up for the nutrients that he is lacking. My cat absolutely loves the stuff. He goes crazy as soon as he sees me pull the tube out of the cabinet. And I believe the problems with the sodium benzoate in it were only after long term use, so you may want to at least try it to get him to eat. Well, I hope I've been some help. I'll be thinking of you. Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi All, Quite a few of you have written asking how we're doing down here with all the fires and so I thought I'd just update the list. Right now the county we are in is the hardest hit, but fortunately we're out on a peninsula between the river and the ocean and there are no big stands of trees here and so I don't think the fires are a threat to us. However, the smoke in the air is unbelievable. Yesterday morning it was so thick you could almost cut it! It even gets in the house with the a/c going and going and going. Although we don't have any respiratory problems, we do try to stay in as much as possible. The firefighters are doing a masterful job in saving lives and homes - some of the brush they just have to let burn itself out. Thanks to all for your care and concern and please do a little rain dance for us! :-) Purrs, -- Kathy G and the 3 furries in Daytona Beach =^.^= Rusty =^.^= Smokey =^.^= Money see us at: http://cgi.gambitsys.com/homey/webdoc5.htm The Cat: Mother Nature's Masterpiece ---------------------------------------- From: katseven@pcsia.com Date sent: Wed, 24 Jun 1998 06:42:04 -0600 Subject: Re: Hi all! Now he's been eating this new food for a 1 1/2 week and his tummy has grown bigger, his body isn't skinny and when he seats he looks round and fat all over, it's when he stands up and walks that you can see this big "to the sides" tummy. He keeps asking for food when he's done with what I give him, yesterday he had 2 full cups of Pro Plan (though he'll be switching to Iams, the vet store run out of the growth formula). I'll ask the vet today and see if there's something else. Other than that he's become so active, he bites and scratches me a lot, whenever I try to pick him up. Today he woke me up with an almost not gentle paw touch. He "attacks" everything he sees, covers, papers, plastics, even the tv remote (the one he once was afraid of). I'm waiting till saturday to have him checked for felv. If you have any ideas or suggestions to what this might be, please write me. Thank you for your help. You might need to get a marked (for ml or ccs) dropper if you use the liquid form--I've noticed that many of the herbs in tincture (mixed w/ liquid) have unmarked droppers. But if the dry form works, great. Susan In a message dated 6/23/98 8:17:04 PM Eastern Daylight Time, katseven@pcsia.com writes: << Have any of you tried Echin. and if so did you use the liquid form, and of course how much did you give? >> I have used echinacea off and on for years with my cats. Just remember, it's an immune stimulant and should only be used for 10-14 days at a time, then take 5-7 days off, then back on, etc. It won't hurt to do it continuously, but since it just stimulates, it won't be effective after that length of time. So it's a waste. I have used the capsules in the food. A good dosage would be one capsule daily. If you're using the extract, use .5 ml once per day. Elaine Crews, N.D. I just found this mailing list yesturday when I returned from the vet. I took my black siamese cat Grey in to be neutered. Never thinking in a million years he would test positive for Feline Leukemia. Even the vet says he's healthy, right now there is nothing wrong with him. He told us to wait a couple of weeks and they do another different test on his to see if he fought it off or if its progressed. My own question for the group is. Does anyone know of any herbal/holistic things I can do for Grey to help him fight? Did your vet recommend Interferon and Immuno-Regulin? regiments defer from vet to vet. Ask the vet about that. If you need info on both, you can get it on this newslist. I give my two enchincea (a drop) in with a small dab of baby food meat. They get it twice a day. Make sure the baby food contains no onion. Then I sprinkle ambrotose in with their wet food and stir it up. I also put a capsule full of cranberry powder in with their wet food. I have one that gets urinary track infections. They only get PetGuard. It's a natural pet food. I get it at the health food store. They get CD dry food again mainly because of my Manx. My two love vegetables and I use the baby food veggies. They go crazy over peas, squash and green beans. If I fix peas for supper, I give them a few watching can labels for salt. I also give them raw beef and cooked lightly chicken and fish. Actualy I think the cats eat better than I do. I have one, my Manx, who is positive. My little guy, Chaz, tested positive and then went negative twice after a series of Immunoregulin and interferon. I'll be getting two strays this week. Others on the list are much more knowldgable than I. You'll find everyone is ready to help. It's NOT a death sentence for the kitten. Just ask a lot of questions. Cheri G., Kitty, Chaz, Harley and Nicky ---------------------------------------- END
