This may be the reason why Nikita isn't interested in food. Rissa-Tai's mom Pam gives Rissa-Tai 1ml every three days. You may want to EMail her privately since her treatment has been quite successful & she's most willing to help others on the list. I'll find her EMail address & forward it to you or maybe Pam will log on soon & see that she's needed. All the best, Saliha ---------------------------------------- From: katseven@pcsia.com Date sent: Tue, 23 Jun 1998 13:51:14 -0600 Subject: RE: Introducing myself, my kitties, and why I'm h To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hey, Debby I think Barb's suggestion on dosage for Echinecea is a good one--I'll also ask an herbalist I know (she's the one who recommended it, I believe); I'll see her tomorrow. As far as Vit. C goes, here is the relevant passage from R. Pitcairn's book _Natural Health for Dogs and Cats_, p. 273: "Vitamin C can be very helpful for cats with this disease [he's referring to FeLV, but in this case Pitcairn recommends the same treatment for FIP]; give 250 milligrams twice a day. Often sodium ascorbate, the salt form of vitamin C (ascorbic acid), is best tolerated. Add the powder to food or, if necessary, dissolve it in water or broth and give it a with a syringe." Maybe Kathy or I should post a query about Echinacea dosage to holisticat? What do you think, Debby? You're definitely welcome here--the three most devastating feline auto-immune deficiency diseases (FIP, FIV, and FeLV) often have treatments and symptoms in common. YES... that would be wonderful if you don't mind posting to holisticat about Echinacea - i.e. how much to give and how often! thanks! Everyone has been so wonderful and welcoming to me here.. as I said , initially I was somewhat hesitant to bother you all since my problem wasn't FIV but FIP. It's comforting to know that others out there are sharing my concerns for a sick kitty. Sad.. but comforting if you know what I mean. I also wasn't aware that Vitamin C was another good thing to give Hershey to boost his immune system.. I'd imagine I could get that as well at a Health food store???? Schmall" To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Nikita Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Charlie, I know you what you mean about going through so many times . . . and never getting any easier. I've lost 3 to FELV and one to FIV and one to FIP and I still have an FIV+ cat. Each time I lose one I feel as if my heart was being ripped out. You may have posted other info that I can't recall . . . but I wanted to say that when my positive cats have problems eating, I've used an antihistamine from my vet which has a side effect of stimulating appetite. If it's going to work, usually I only have to use one or 2 doses and it will improve appetite for 2-3 days. It is called cyprohepatadine. Most of us give the 7 days on 7 days off regimen of interferon, although I've seen 2 days off and one day on also. Have you looked into using immunoregulin along with the interferon? It's more expensive, but I am a real believer in it. I was so depressed from friday to today (the technician just fixed it) cause I thought I would never be in touch with you guys again, I know that eventually I would have gotten another e-mail connection but to think that I didn't save your messages, that I was missing all the information. But I'm back and I MISSED you all a LOT. I'll catch up with the messages now and you'll be hearing from me soon. Benito is doing fine, he just wants to eat and drink water, his stomach looks like a ball though I try to feed him only 3/4 cup of dry food, that's what the vet said Benito needed. Other than that he's like a little tornado, running and scratching and jumping and you name it!! Benito sounds like he's so much fun to have around; a tornado is a great description of a healthy kitten! If you aren't already, you might want to try to spread that ¾ cup of food throughout the day. Keep up the good work, you two!!! They say it still must be used with clinical symptoms. I will re read and make some notes for tomorrow, but at age 11, your cat already has something in his favor. Cats under the age of 5 seem to be the most susceptible and the fact he has never had a sick day in his life sounds pretty good to. I know it's easy for me to say, but try not to worry. I really think your cat will get a clean bill of health next time tested. barb ---------------------------------------- From: Newtanator@aol.com Date sent: Tue, 23 Jun 1998 21:29:10 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Benito's diet Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Paula, Did Benito have a big belly when you got him? Is he skinny otherwise? Little toothpick legs? It's possible he has some gastric upset from new food, gas, bloating. Has your vet checked him over? Sorry for so many questions, I have some fat cats also, they walk like raccoons, rolling back and forth when they walk, but they are fat all over, not just in their tummy's. let me know. barb ---------------------------------------- Date sent: Tue, 23 Jun 1998 21:52:30 +0000 From: LawBet Subject: Re: Introducing myself, my kitties, and why I'm h To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Organization: Home for Wayward Felines Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Debby. All I can tell you is that this test has been out since Feb. and presumably can ISOLATE the antibodies for FIP..... more than that I really don't know. What's interesting is that my own vet seems *somewhat * skeptical and said that "every few years.. some lab comes up with some NEW test for FIP that they say works". Hmmmm....... If you find out anything else, needless to say I'll be most anxious to hear about it. I'm trying not to panic.... although being a Type A personality it's hard to stay calm when it's one of my kitties who's lived here for 11 yrs. and has never been sick a day in his life. ;-) > Debby, & the HBG (the HairballGang) ---------------------------------------- From: katseven@pcsia.com Date sent: Tue, 23 Jun 1998 16:04:32 -0600 Subject: Blood Panels To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi-- Here's a nifty website which explains each of the elements in a blood panel or CBC: http://www.baysport.com/bloodexp.html I don't know if you all get copies of the blood panels back and I didn't know how to read it--and my vet doesn't have time to explain every little detail. I don't think it is possible to over-feed kittens--especially ones that have been starved for a long time. I have always kept food out for my cats and only had one that would over eat and he was just selfish and would eat until he puked just to keep the other cat from having any of it. He finally learned that he didn't actually have to eat it...he could just hover over it and the others would leave (he wasn't real bright--they left because they were FULL!) I would let Benito eat whatever he wants...it is a luxury he deserves. Angela. And other thing too, Benito has grown a big belly, it's like big from the sides and thin at the end (more like a pregnant kitty) the belly is a bit hard and when he walks it sticks out. He also drinks lots of water in a way Lucky never did. He pees 2 to 3 times a day and poops once or twice. He was given a pill for worms, so I think he's worm free. You guys have more experience than I do, do you think it's OK for him to have that big belly and also should I give him more food??. Lucky never ate that much so I don't have anything to compare it with. Thank you so much for your concern and suggestions. You're sooooo sweet to be so encouraging..... I'm still here chewing my fingernails and watching every sneeze he makes! Please... if you have any other thoughts and don't mind sharing them with me... I'd really appreciate it as it was difficult for me to weed thru everything in the FIP article and make much sense of it - being a Fine Arts major and not scientifically trained!
