If not, I wonder about treating her with Primadone instead of pheno or valium. Those drugs are quite strong for slowing down the whole system, whereas Primadone works more directly (I think) to the cause of epilepsy. I don't know if it is safe for cats or not, but you may want to ask your neurologist about it. Take care, and we're pulling for Ninja to get better soon. Does anyone else happen to save messages from this list? If so, could you please bundle them as a text file and send them to me? It would be much appreciated. I've also lost some of the personal mail that folks have sent to me recently (during that period of the 8th through the 13th), so, if you haven't heard from me, please resend your mail, and I'll try to get to it asap. Thanks. Take care, and "til Cheesecake!" In loving memory of Vyvyan: March 20, 1988 - August 15, 1997 James G. I always used cooked calves liver to avoid the toxins. After all, the liver is sort of the bodies garbage dump so it does store a lot of junk over the years, but that is avoided in a calf's liver. barb ---------------------------------------- From: "James G. If you're able to take her in & she gets along reasonably well with your cats I think she's much better off. There are so many unwanted cats & I agree with Barb, giving them a good life that they're probably not going to have unless you take them is better, even with the ?% risk. You can check my post from June 1, & see what your vet says. Sharon posted the message within the last couple of weeks... If nobody who is also on F-L has the message still, I'll post to Feline-L and ask her to repeat the warning. She made it clear it was *raw* liver she was talking about, but warned that even large amount of cooked liver could have problems. This led to a discussion of whether cats eat mice livers in the wild - and my memory of my childhood cat carefully leaving the "gopher guts", and eating the rest of the gopher. If you think about it - the liver is the filter for the blood (and kidneys and the rest of the "guts"), so all the toxic junk the body doesn't want collects there (that's why overweight cats tend to have liver disease - the liver is busy trying to filter the excess fat also). And, even if they did eat the mouse liver, the proportion of liver to the rest of the mouse is miniscule. We tend to give beef liver as a treat in itself - a whole dinner's worth. If the cat were to be eating the whole cow, the proportion of liver to "rest of cow" would be about 1/2 a bite, if that! At that rate, a liver treat, even raw, probably would not hurt - but if that's *all* they get for a meal, the concentration of toxins could cause problems... I'm on hold. ......... Well, my vet wants to wait until I hear from the neurologist because of the risk of liver toxicity with oral valium. They are open tomorrow though and I think I can get a ride from a friend's mom if I need one. I'll keep y'all posted. barb+ninja ---------------------------------------- From: Newtanator@aol.com Date sent: Fri, 19 Jun 1998 20:21:12 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: liver toxic to cats Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net It is interesting to note, that animals in the wild, eat the internal organs first, including the liver, BUT their prey has rarely been exposed to all the "additives" our cattle have. I still think this is the problem. I am hoping calves liver will be found to be safer. barb ---------------------------------------- From: "Moermond, Barbara" To: "'felvtalk@MailingList.net'" Subject: RE: Ninja update Date sent: Fri, 19 Jun 1998 15:21:52 -0500 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Gina, That's interesting. I'll tell my vet. One of the things she's waiting for is for me to hear from the neurologist before adding another medicine to her system. It's really hard, because we don't know for sure if it is a meningioma; the neurologist thinks it is from her behaviors and the type of seizures, but without the MRI..... it's an educated guess. I think I might have her paged again. Couldn't hurt. Any of the fat soluable vitamins * A,D,E,K* can be dangerous taken in large amounts because the body stores them in the body fat, (goodness, what a storage tank I am!) AND great suggestion about the eye drops. It is a good idea to warm ear drops also. People have actually had seizures or passed out when cold ear drops were put in the ears. So a few minutes in the warm water is a good idea. Remember, the inner ear is much warmer and closer to your core temp than the skin is, but I have to say I think those ear thermometers are grossly inaccurate, just a personal opinion. barb ---------------------------------------- From: Newtanator@aol.com Date sent: Fri, 19 Jun 1998 20:38:53 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Worried about Lefty Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Angela, I have done quite a bit of research on Epogen. For the life of me, I can't find it. I must have moved it to a disc. I sent what I had to Jim and I'm hoping he still has it and didn't lose it when his computer died. I will look for it and get it to you. It may be in the archieves tho! I will check there. barb ---------------------------------------- Date sent: Fri, 19 Jun 1998 20:51:57 -0400 (EDT) From: Charles Klaus To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Hello Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi I am new to this list - but not to trying to deal with sick cats - my latest fel v cat is a 3 year old male by the name of Nikita - This time I am trying some of the treatments that I have seen on the internet - Interferon - and also have a bottle of aloe vera juice. Nikita seems to like the aloe vera and dose not mind the once a day dose of the interferon - also I have some concentrated pills that contain cats claw & aloe vera but the are to big for him to swallow so I got some baby food (chicken soup) and mixed the contents and fed it to him by placing it on his tongue. He dos not like that so well. The aloe juice i give to him 3 times per day since he seems to like it. I saw in a scientific report somewhere that for a human to get the viral fighting effects they would have to drink a 1/2 litter per day. Any body got an idea of how much this would translate to for a 11 # cat? Thru past experiences I sometimes feel that it is all for naught - But I hate to that feeling when you have given up all hope and there is nothing left but death and loss. I would like to here any positive stories regarding successful outcomes of treatments such as these. Charlie ---------------------------------------- From: "James G. Wilson" To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Date sent: Fri, 19 Jun 1998 21:02:41 +0000 Subject: Re: Hello Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi Charlie, and welcome to the list. It sounds as though you are doing plenty of the right things for Nikita to help him fight this nasty virus. I've heard some good things about the cat's claw, so, if you can get him to eat it, it should help him boost his immunity. Also, which protocol are you using for the Interferon? You say one ounce per day- do you do the seven days on, seven days off protocol? About the Aloe Vera juice- another math problem :) One Litre is the equivalent of 1.06 quarts which is just over two pints (33 ounces). Now, if it takes half a Litre (16.5 ounces) for a human that is roughly 15 times the mass of a cat (on average), it is safe to assume that giving Nikita a little over an ounce of Aloe juice per day would be the equivalent to the half a Litre for a human. I hope that folks here will share their stories with you because there is much to be learned from what we've all been through. Unfortunately, I personally don't have any "success stories" to share with you because my Vyvyan never had a chance to be treated (negligent vet) :( However, since we started these projects, many people have been able to give their precious little ones some extra months of quality life that they wouldn't have otherwise had. I hope you, too, can benefit from this forum and the experience folks here have to offer. Take care, and I wish and Nikita all the best. I've been too busy to sort out which messages are worth posting to the archives (I hate to censor anything, but much of the stuff from that day had nothing to do with FeLV). I'll try to work on it this weekend now that you've brought to light the significance of messages from that day :) Take care, and 'Til Cheesecake!!!
