My vet and the Oncologist decided to stop the chemo and give her Neupogen to bring it up, as hers went all the way down to 200. But, I think we also stopped it one other time when it was around 2000. From what I understand, below 3000 is dangerous, and leaves them open to just about anything, any type of infection, as their bodies can't fight anything off really. Let us know how Rubin is doing. This information will be added to the "welcome message" as well for new subscribers. One of the reasons I'm sending out this reminder is that a survey of folks who have left the list included some of these problems. No one is being accused of any misdeeds, but, if you feel that you *may* be inadvertantly doing any of these things and don't know how to solve the problem, please contact me, and we'll work on solving it. I encourage everyone to read about email netiquette at: http://www.gators.net/Netiquette.htm Take care, and best wishes to all. In loving memory of Vyvyan: March 20, 1988 - August 15, 1997 James G. The pillows I spoke of with the well for kitty next to your head are $19.95 each plus $5 shipping. When I'm not nearly so busy, I'll get the brochure from my friend, scan it and put it up on the web so people can see the thing. In the meantime, if anyone wants one on concept alone, let me know. I should have a new wholesale PC price list tomorrow. This week, I will copy everyone on my post to Jim and Larry so everyone can see what the choices are -- most likely, Jim will decide what to do this week. Finally, no word yet from the supposed FeLV specialist I was referred to, but I can say that every vet I have personally talked to is optimistic about adding happy months to a symptomatic FeLV cat's life through nutrition and supplements -- but pessimistic about adding any more time than that, and highly pessimistic about any short-term cure, and of clinically unproven treatments. -- Steve -------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 18 May 1998 22:10:43 From: JENNIFER PELLAND To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Let me introduce myself Reply-to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi everyone, I'm a new member and wanted to step forward and introduce myself. My name is Jennifer, and five years ago I adopted three kittens. The shelter tested only one, since they were littermates (mistake number one), and my vet didn't retest them even though they were only eight weeks old at the time of their test (mistake number two). The cats weren't vaccinated against FeLV, but lived indoors and weren't exposed to any other cats. Nearly three years later, we took Tisiphone in to the vet for a cold and discovered that she had a tumor in her chest. The vet (not the same vet as when they were kittens, luckily) retested her for FeLV since she was awfully young to have cancer, and she was positive, as were her symptom-free sisters. We treated her cancer, but one month later she came out of remission and so we did the right thing before she really began to suffer. A year and a half later, Alecto wouldn't stop scratching, so we took her to the vet. The medication, which should have worked for a month, stopped working after a few days, and she got very lethargic and her tongue grew very pale. It was anemia caused by intreatable cancer in her bone marrow, and once again, we did the right thing. That was three months ago. The remaining cat, Megaera, just turned five on the 1st (woo hoo!) She is currently symptom-free, although she is asthmatic. Anyhow, we're hoping to keep Megaera symptom-free and healthy as long as possible. Our vet mentioned that they'll soon have interferon available, and that she can take it and her steroids for her asthma (we can't cut back on the steroids at all--she starts having attacks again if we cut back). I do trust this vet very much. When Tisiphone was undergoing chemo at Tufts Veterinary Hospital, the students there said our vet was excellent and they wanted to work there when they graduated. Still, I'd like to Thanks, Jennifer -------------------------------------- Date sent: Mon, 18 May 1998 17:43:28 -0500 (CDT) From: "Nancy A. James, you are right. We talked to the vet and whatever has caused the liver damage is also attacking the kidneys and probably the same thing that caused the fever. The lymph node was the first clue, but the vets can't find out what it is that's attacking his body. They will know more tommorrow. It doesn't look good, but I just can't stop hoping. Thank you James. Why does this have to be so hard? I have used Interferon on all my positive cats for over 2 years now and I've had great success with it. I found Maggie when she was just 2 weeks old and bottle fed her. I had her tested at 10 weeks and she tested positive then so she had to be born with Felv. It was hard to believe because she was so healthy. I had her on Iams kitten food since she began to eat solid food, then Iams Lamb and Rice when she was 6 months old. I started her on Interferon when she was 6 months and had her on it for a month before I spayed her. She came through the surgery with flying colors. Then I waited a month after her spay to introduce her into my household of other positive cats. Well, I've had her on Interferon (one week on, one week off) for 1 1/2 years now - she'll be 2 in June. She has NEVER been sick, even when another cat or cats get a respiratory infection, Maggie doesn't catch it. I really believe the Interferon made a big difference. The vet retested Maggie when she was 1 and she still tested positive. She will retest her again in June of this year. I'm hoping! In April, I began to add Vit.C and Ambrotose to her food and I make the high calcium chicken broth for all the cats - they love it! Harvey is another cat I have who benefited from the Interferon. He's been here 7 years and has tested positive all that time. When he was 5, he began to get one respiratory infection after another. I knew his immune system was starting to break down. That's when I began the Interferon treatments on him. It took about 6 months to really notice the infections coming less frequently. Now, 2 years later, he doesn't have any respiratory infections at all! Believe me, this cat was really bad - he would get high fevers (once it was over 106 and he was at the vet's for 2 days before they could break it. They actually didn't think he would live that time), he had caked up eyes, discharge from his nose, he would sneeze continuously. He had gone through every antibiotic they had and he was at one point on steoids. He is on nothing now, except the Interferon, Ambrotose and Vit.C. His weight is back up to 14 pounds and he is the picture of health! I think putting Megaera on Interferon is an excellent idea. It could add months or years to her life. Good luck with her. First let me note your courage and compassion in treating your kittens. And then let me congratulate you on having 5 years with Megaera. I'm confused. You are starting the Interferon because Megaera has tested positive for FeLV, or as preventive medicine ? Interferon has proved invaluable in the treatment of FeLV, but carries with it a few side effects that are listed on the FAQ sheet- you might want to read that later. I know my experience with Interferon was a good one, the drug gave a 14 month period of remission of FeLV symptoms that threatened the life of my 10 week old kitten. And others here will attest to its efficacy. Again, welcome ! .marilyn. -------------------------------------- From: katseven@pcsia.com Date sent: Mon, 18 May 1998 17:32:02 -0600 Subject: CATCARE: Re: Let me introduce myself To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi, Jennifer, Welcome to the list. To clarify, Megaera is FeLV+, but currently not showing any symptoms of the disease. We'd like to keep it that way, and the vet mentioned that interferon could do the trick. Anyhow, we will be having a discussion with the vet about it before putting her on the medication (or not putting her on it). If the possible side effects seem to outweigh the potential benefits, then we'll probably just keep things status quo since she is currently healthy. We're also planning on retesting her, just to se sweet, but it's also sad. <> That's very good to know. Thanks!
