Wednesday May 13, 1998 Part 2 27 Messages ====================================== From: Kelly To: "'felvtalk@mailinglist.net'" Date: Wed, 13 May 1998 14:24:36 -0700 Reply-to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hey all. I got back from the specialist. He said that the Uveitis was spreading to Jade's good eye as I expected. He said that bloodwork wouldn't be necessary to find out foresure that if Jade had FeLLC because the Uveitis could only spread to his good eye in a FeLV + cat. Jade's lymph nodes are also enlarged as ive mentioned before. He went on to say that in his opinion Jade didn't have much time left. I told him that besides his eye's everything else appears to be fine with him. He's still very affecionate, still got a strong appetite, strength is fine. Although he's sleeping a bit more than usual but that's to be expected I would think. So , I decided to give him medication for his eye's. The left one is beyond repair, but the right is just starting. He prescribed COMBO..some sort of eye drops that he'll get 4 times daily...and some Prednisone tablets , one every 12 hrs. If anyone can tell anything about these types of mediations I would appreciate it. Thanks. Kelly. p.s. does anyone know how to make a subject using MS outlook? -------------------------------------- From: "James G. Starting him on Interferon and Acemannan might help to slow the FeLV, thus allowing these eye meds to more effectively do their job. Please ask your specialist about these options. I'm sorry that he feels Jade doesn't have much time left, but we on the list have seen some miraculous things happen despite gloomy predictions from vets. Panther, Rissa-Tai, Lefty, and others are good examples. Please keep us updated on how Jade is doing. Take care, and we'll be thinking of you both. Merlin was paralysised entirely over last Christmas. Totally. Could not even lift his head. After about 3 wks, he was walking again. Not well, but he did and he remained my little magic man for 3 more months before I lost him. Tho it ended badly in my case, I wouldn't trade those 3 months for anything. Many have brought their cats back from the brink of death and they are still here, so never give up. barb -------------------------------------- From: Newtanator Date sent: Wed, 13 May 1998 18:53:25 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Kelly & Jade's Uveitis Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Kelly, Check the www.angelfire.com/il/felv/ for a FAQ page on steriods. barb -------------------------------------- Date sent: Wed, 13 May 1998 15:33:50 -0500 (CDT) From: "Nancy A. In talking with my vet this afternoon, she said it was a reactive lymph node--no evidence of hyperplasia (sp?). She said it could have been due to a bite wound or a bug bite, but since there was no bite wound . . . and Panther has been known to play roughly with Jake, but never to any extent of bites. He does go outside in an enclosed area and other cats as well as us humans bring in ticks . . . so it's possible. Barb, Marilyn, anyone, know anything else about reactive lymph nodes? Also, in spite of Panther's bloodwork being good, I would appreciate any opinions on whether or not you all think it would be worth it to have me put him through the Immunoregulin series? My vet said she'd do it, but that she doesn't really like to medicate if it's not necessary. I questioned her as to her choice of words ("medicate") and I felt she skirted the issue. What do you all think? I need some input to make a good decision here. Thank you all for everything! Lymph nodes-lymph nodes act as filters keeping particulate matter esp bacteria from gaining entrance to the bloodstream. They may stop cancer cells, but in turn may become a metastatic site. reaction leukemoid- this may occur in patients with an infection or tumor, but who do not have leukemia. In short, she told you in easier to understand language that there's no cancer...... I can't answer your immunoregulin questions tho, I leave that to the people who have experience with it.... .marilyn. Im a student on a very limited budget. I cannot afford expensive drugs unfortunately. I will ask the specialist about Interferon and Acemannan and the prices. He knows my financial situation and said that giving him treatment with expensive drugs would just prolong it..which would be great but..... . I just hope I just have to give him the Combo and Prednisone for his eyes and hope nothing else starts happening for now. Do you know what exactly Prednisone does? Also, can anyone give me some kind of price range for both Interferon and Acemannan. Thanks. I don't (can't) feel that it ended badly. We are not going to cure FeLV on this list, that is going to come from advancements in human virology. But what we do so well here, and will continue to do, is buy more quality time for our cats and us to be together. And, as with HIV, in some cases maybe we'll be able to buy so much time that things will seem normal. So, Kelly and Jade might not have a whole normal healthy life together, and maybe he is late stage FeLV. But he's still happy, and maybe with some continued management from Kelly he'll be around for a while. -- Steve -------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 13 May 1998 18:54:35 +0000 From: "James G. Wilson" Add to Address Book Subject: RE: Kelly & Jade's Uveitis To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi Kelly, Prednisone is a steroid immunosuppressant that allows certain other drugs to work more effectively. In the short term, it will help slow activities such as anemia and tumor growth in FeLV+ cats and restore a level of appetite. However, it shouldn't be relied upon as a main choice of treatment because it does have side effects after long-term use. Interferon is NOT expensive- $20.00 should get you at least a three month supply. Since you can administer this drug yourself orally, no further cost from the vet is needed. The Acemannan is more expensive- $40.00 for a month's treatment, and you'll have to have your vet administer this drug. However, the benefits can be worth it- this combination along with an antioxident such as DMG (Dimethylglycine- bought at health food stores) can slow the progression of FeLV and allow Jade to live a happier, longer, and more comfortable life. Of course, there are no guarantees, but this is a good option. Also, perhaps others on the list can provide info on some holistic treatments that are cheaper- but, still effective. Let us know what we can do to help you further. Take care, and best wishes. In loving memory of Vyvyan: March 20, 1988 - August 15, 1997 James G.
