Late Thursday evening, as I was petting her, I found a small half-inched size lump on her left shoulder blade area under the skin. It was reddish in color, but moved and didn't seem to hurt her when we touched it. Other than that, she had been doing fine. We took her to the vet's early Saturday afternoon, and the vet said that it probably was an abcess caused by the Depo injection, that if something like that were to happen, it usually starts showing up in one to two weeks after an injection (the timing was right for that). She opened it and drained it of everything (I won't go into the details :) and checked the stuff on a slide. She said all she saw was puss/dead white blood cells, and no signs of bacteria at all, that we caught it in time. She cleaned it, and said to leave it alone, it should heal up fine. We'll be going in next Friday for her next checkup, and as of tonight, she is fine (was ok immediately after) and is doing just great! She had also gained another four ounces, she's up to 7 pounds on the nose, and the vet also commented that her gums look nice and pink - but we'll do the cbc next Friday. The vet also said that she is pretty sure this will heal up nicely, but to keep checking for any new changes, that it shouldn't turn into an Injection site sarcoma. We also talked about the new immunization protocols, and she said she is aware of them, but that there is also another side that we haven't seen mentioned on the list here - when they are given in the rear legs, the injection is often given deep into the muscle. If a sarcoma occurs, because of the location it generally is not discovered until it is so far along that the only choice is to amputate. Whereas in the shoulder areas, bumps tend to be noticed more quickly and can be treated earlier (I probably caught this the day it showed up, really). Catch-22 here, but I wanted to pass that info along as well. Other than this, she has been doing really well - playing, eating well, and getting into trouble - a definate sign she is feeling better! On another note, I only received one post today (Saturday), about Ketainya (spelling?). Was there anything else, in other words, did AOL screw up again, or was it a really really slow day? So I guess everybody was off doing stuff. Prob cuz it's a holiday weekend. It is so wonderful to hear how well Rissa-Tai is doing. It seems just a few weeks age we weren't sure if she would make it. I think Rissa should be our new poster kitty! And a super Meowrthers day to you as her Mom for sticking it out. Since its slow this weekend..a Leia update: she is doing well, so far. Larry (son) takes it a day at a time. Wormed her yesterday. He went out and got kitten formula for her. She loves it. I took over my antioxidents and vitamins to add. Sutures and a test to see how well her heart is adapting next Saturday. Jack update: He is settling in well. Now free in the house. He has ventured to the kitchen and my room, but still afraid of the living room because of the tv. An absolute attention hound who wants to be pet and fussed over all the time. Hasn't figured out he can relax and play yet tho. Also, we're going to adopt a new kitten from Noah's Ark. This is kitten season, so we will be keeping very busy saving as many babies as possible. Last night while we were in bed, I moved him slightly to the side of my pillow(he was taking up all of it:)). He growled at me and then attacked me(severely). I tried to calm him down but it just made him more aggresive. I covered my head and went back to sleep. Looking back, I can see this kind of behavior, just not as violent. He growls alot but I thought it was because he just didn't feel good. He was just at the vets last week and the vet said he looked better than he had seen him before in the past. He was having a problem with an eye ulcer. He has been feeling really good lately, running and playing. He does get down some days but perks back up. This morning, he isn't feeling very well. He is drooling quite a bit and is sleeping at the moment. I gave him an injection of immunoregulin(which usually makes him feel alot better), interferon and his antibiotic. That's all I'm going to do today. I don't bother him all that much to make him turn on me. He gets his supplements and all in the morning and is left alone till his antibiotic in the evening. His dosages for the supplements are cut down for a cat instead of human dosages. I am wondering if I am giving him too much vitamin C or Ambrotose. I am at a loss as to what to do or what is happening. Maybe Dr. Myer's would have an idea? Any ideas from all of you? KA>High Calcium Chicken Broth KA>Your own homemade chicken broth will be full of calcium and nutients. KA>Here's how to make it: KA>2 to 3 lbs. chicken (she prefers thighs) KA>1 lb. chicken necks and backs KA>water to cover KA>1/4 cup tomato juice (not V8 juice) KA>Put all chicken into a soup pot large enough so the chicken fills the pot KA>only halfway. Cover with water until water is one to two inches above KA>chicken. Cover the pot loosely (tip the lid). Bring to a low simmer. KA>Simmer three to five hours, occasionally breaking up the chicken and KA>adding more water if necessary. During the last hour remove the lid and KA>let the water cook down until the chicken is barely covered. Broth is KA>now deliciously strong. Pour off broth, cool to room temperature, and KA>then store in refrigerator. KA>While the broth is cooling, pour enough cold water over the chicken left KA>in the pot to cover. Then let it cool some more until it's cool enough KA>for you to be able to touch. With your hands, knead, squeeze, and stir KA>the chicken around in the water to get all the good out of the meat and KA>into the water. The water will begin to look milky. Finally, take KA>handfuls of chicken meat, wring out the liquid into the pot, and throw KA>the meat away. (The hours of simmering have succeeded in transferring KA>the usable nutrition from the meat into the broth. What little nutrition KA>is left in the meat at this point would be largely indigestible.) KA>Leave the bones and the broth behind in the KA>pot. KA> Pour this broth off and store it with the first batch of KA>broth. KA>Transfer the bones into a smaller pot. Crack them up so they form a KA>fairly compact mass in the bottom of the pan. Cover the bones with water KA>and add the one-fourth cup of tomato juice. Simmer one-half to one KA>hour. KA> Pour off this broth, again combining it with the other broth. Throw th KA>bones away. Store about two cups of the broth in a jar in the KA>refrigerator; store the rest in the freezer in pint-size covered freezer KA>containers to be thawed as needed. To thaw, stand the container in a KA>bowl of hot water. KA>Chicken Super Soup KA> Here's how to make your homemade chicken broth even more nutritious. KA> Combine the following ingredients: KA>1/4 cup High-Calcium Chicken Broth (see recipe above) KA>1/16 teaspoon ascorbic acid crystals (250 units of vitamin C) KA>1/2 teaspoon food yeast (flaked, brewer's, or tarula) (can be gotten at a KA>health KA> food store) KA>1/16 teaspoon feline digestive enzymes KA> can be mail ordered from: Very Healthy Enterprises KA> P.O. Box 4728 KA> Inglewood, CA 90309 KA> Phone 213-672-3269 KA>I have made this broth (but not the Chicken Super Soup), and my kitties KA>love it. It is really not as complicated as it sounds, once started, it KA>just seems to work out good. KA>I'll be sending healing thoughts to Booger, and you too. Be careful not KA>to stress out. Most folks know that I have been cautioning about the type and amount of Vitamin C to use. I had the opportunity to talk with a great vet today who cares for the kitties at the Save A Life shelter where my new three adopted me. In his private practice, he commonly sees cats with renal (kidney) problems caused by regular Vitamin C doses of a gram (1000mg) or more in a week. Evidently the unused C crystallizes in the kidneys, and it doesn't matter what kind of C is used. He feels that much more minute amounts of C are safer. He suggested taking the human daily dosage and adjusting by weight, and that is going to result in a very minute amount indeed considering that 60mg is the minimum daily adult requirement.. As I reported on my website, even the Linus Pauling Institute (the initial champion of C megadoses) now says the therapeutic range is actually very narrow before toxicity at some level can be observed in people. The vet also gave me the name and number of another vet who specializes in FeLV cases in Hermosa Beach here in So Cal, and I'm going to give her a call and pick her brain. I'll let you all know what she has to say. I'm also doing quite a lot of research on how to help FeLV cats like Chloe who die from wasting and anemia, and I'll be ready to share some things later this month. I can tell you right now that we have much to learn from the treatment of HIV and eating disorders in people, and that mood as well as appetite are important. -- Steve -------------------------------------- From: "Steve Lackow" To: "FeLV Talk" Subject: Computer Stuff Date: Sun, 10 May 1998 22:22:40 -0700 Reply-to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Prices are dropping very steadily right now because of various technology and market condtions, and what would have cost $1,950 last month cost $1,750 two weeks ago and less than that now. We'll have new prices this week, and I'll forward them to Jim and Larry and we'll see what Jim prefers to do. At $1,385 we are indeed quite close to what Jim has defined he needs. We will come very close to getting a good if not great 19" monitor, Pentium MMX w/32MB of RAM and 2MB of video RAM, a 2 or 3 GB UDMA HDD, a 56K modem, sound and speakers, kb, mouse, W95. The issue is that we might hold off on the monitor until we can get the very best and biggest, because that's the particular need Jim has. Even a good 19" with large fonts is tough for Jim to see. Anyway, I'm thrilled about the whole thing, as I said I didn't expect we'd raise this much. I had to use a 486 thiis week like Jim has, and it was a reminder that he's gonna be one happy camper with the new system! -- Steve -------------------------------------- From: "Steve Lackow" To: "FeLV Talk" Subject: Kitties Date: Sun, 10 May 1998 22:30:13 -0700 Reply-to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Well, those who don't look "down there" now have company.
