I noticed some of my kittens in the past getting thinner and not eating - I tried force feeding them and did not for a moment think anything else may be going on. Then recently I had two litters and the kittens AND their moms were affected badly. Most of the kittens have died as well as one of the moms. I also lost one of my cats (not related to the latter) recently due to renal failure, for no reason we could fathom whatsoever. Symptoms are as follows (not necessarily in that order): 1. Vomiting (only in kittens: the kittens vomits foam and not stomach contents) - this stops after a while. 2. One of my cats did the "sitting by the water bowl" routine. It is better now although still thin but playing and eating and not on any medication at all. 3. White feces - (only in the kittens) - I handle this by giving Doxycycline (Doxysyrup) which stops it. 4. Loss of appetite, depression, loss of weight. (I have a kitten aged 5 months which is no larger than a two month old kitten which is hanging on for dear life: it plays, eats, etc but is being medicated daily.) 5. Dehydration (kittens only). The kittens who developed this did not survive. 6. Neurological symptoms: I lost one kitten which, at 2 months (it was chubby and happy and playful the day before) started circling and falling down. 7. Currently having a problem with a kitten which has just survived pneumonia....the vet checked for FIP at this point. Help!!! Her vet used a new (just came out this year) specific (Elisa) test for FIP (not just all corona viruses). However, from what you said about the backward state of veterinary med. in S. Africa, I question whether your vet used this test. Just thought you'd all like to know about this. This sounds very much like distemper. I've never seen it in a kitty but I have seen it in a puppy. The symptoms sound very much like the puppy's. And pats on the back for taking in one you know is not perfect. Actually, as the "big three" go, FIV is probably the best of the three. Many FIV cats live a long and normal life with it. It is like people that have HIV. Many people live normal life spans with it. It's only when it converts to the AIDS version that the illness and symptoms begin. I would keep up all his vacinations, not board him if possible,(if fact, if they know he has it, they might not take him) feed him well with some vitamins, avoid stress and should do fine. The FeLV cat has number two. (FIP is the worst of the three) However, there are also many FeLV cats that also live long, normal lives. You may want to retest in month. Sometimes the cat can beat the disease itself and there are times when the ELISA is just plain wrong. So if your cat is symptom free and healthy, I would retest in a while. You may also want to start him on ImmunoRegulin. This is an immune system booster and I have had good luck with it. Again, good nutrition and vitamins will go a long way in helping keep him healthy. THere is so much information to digest, best to do it a little at a time. Again, welcome to the list to you and yours. barb -------------------------------------- From: Newtanator Date sent: Thu, 7 May 1998 18:53:35 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Immuno-Regulon Question Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Angela, My personal experience with ImmunoRegulin has been what I got from the company. Tho I understand the drug has changed hands. I gave it this way. day 1, day 3, day 7, then twice a week for a month, then once a week for a month, then every other week, then once a month for 2 months. But your vets idea of twice a week, then once a week for 20 wks doesn't sound bad either. It probably would be ok that way as well. barb -------------------------------------- From: Newtanator Date sent: Thu, 7 May 1998 18:59:18 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Leia Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net All, Leia continues to do well. My son gave her the name. He is a Starwars fan and he though the two kittens were brother and sister. So they became Luke and Leia. Surprise! Luke was a she, so she is now Holly. She has to be confined for a few days yet, which she doesn't like, but she looks good! barb -------------------------------------- From: Newtanator Date sent: Thu, 7 May 1998 19:05:22 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: FIP Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Nina, This is awful for you. I fear FIP more than anything for my cats. I hope they are away from the rest of the cats. I wish I had some help to offer, but we don't have much treatment to offer here in the states either. Your description of it in kittens makes me fear it all the more. How do you cope with that? Do there seem to be any kittens that are immune to it? Have your two lost little ones come home yet? I hope so, you need some good news. barb -------------------------------------- From: Newtanator Date sent: Thu, 7 May 1998 19:06:25 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: FIP Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Susan, See if you can find out more about the FIP test. To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: FIP Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hey everyone: Just wanted to let everyone know what Howling Kittys' test results were from the Internal Medicine Specialist. He had a bone marrow test and it was determined that he had Lymphatic Sarcoma in addition to the leukemia. I'm devastated. I have another appointment next week to discuss possible treatment venues for him. I'd like to be armed with some intelligent questions to ask on his behalf. Any suggestions anyone? He has gained a pound and 1/2 since his last vet visit. This is thanks to the pet-tinnic. He has a great appetite since he started it. I'm looking for all the positives. He seems to be relatively energetic after all he's been through. He is on Amoxicillin for this week due to the marrow test. He is on Prednizone and Interferon. Is there anything I should watch out for with the antibiotic? I feel as if I'm flying blind here but I'm willing to try anything that will make him feel a little better. Thanks to everyone for all their help and I'm praying for all of you and your kitties. God Bless. Maybe radiation or chemo. He doesn't have it on top of the leukemia, he has it because of the leukemia. That's the devistating part of this disease. Cancer is the cause of so many of problems. Without a properly functioning immune system, it gets a hold. I am glad he is still feeling good and eating. Put as much weight on him now as you can, he will needed it in the battles ahead. ImmunoRegulin will not help once cancer is involved, but you may consider the Acemannan. It seems Rissi- Tai on this list had a similiar problem and she may have just beat it. I hope she adds her experiences for you. barb -------------------------------------- Date sent: Thu, 7 May 1998 21:01:10 -0500 (CDT) From: "Nancy A. From this description it appears that this problem is devastating the cat population in this woman's home. FIP is very difficult to definitively diagnose in a live animal and the signs this woman is seeing could be a combination of FIP, FeLV and other complicating organisms. With this many animals affected diagnosis is crucial to saving those that remain if they can be saved. I would not add any new cats to this household until this problem is resolved or the house is depopulated completely for at least 90 days. M. W. I'm giving him everything he will eat and then some! I'm just so concerned about the chemo and radiation. Is it painful and how is it given? Do cats get the nausea and side effects that humans do? I had extensive chemo last year and it was without a doubt the worst experience I have ever undergone. I don't want that for him. I guess the fear of the unknown is what is beginning to get to me. Thanks for listening. The oncologist had put her on a type of chemo, and we did have problems regulating it, as her white blood cell count dropped to dangerous levels and we had to use Neupogen to get it back up again. However, after all the trials and tribulations we went through, she seems to have come out ok. If you'd like more info, email me either on the list or privately and I'll give you all the details. Their pain threshold is higher, and then again, they don't have the expectations of side effects that we would have, which might contribute to how we are affected. The chemo Rissa-Tai had was given in pill form, 1/4 pill each day the first time we tried it, and then after the trouble we had with her wbc count we went to 1/4 tab every third day. She didn't really seem to react too much, maybe got a little tired. You do have to keep close tabs on their cbc, at least weekly, to keep on the lookout for any potential problems. The only thing that appeared to give her nausea was when we added the antibiotics to the mixture, and they were a tetracycline derivative. He ate good he played he was pretty much his normal self. He had to go in once a week for either an injection or IV, I'm not sure (it's been awhile ago), the tumor disappeared with-in a couple of weeks. Unfortunetly it did come back and finally I think the stress of going to the Vets. for the injection every week took it's toll. He did get a couple of more months with a good quality of life. If the tumor hadn't of come back the Vet was very optomistic, his blood work was excellent. so there's always hope! Whatever your decision, I'll be thinking of you. Take-care!
