Monday May 4, 1998 Part 1 20 Messages ====================================== From: "Jean Wells" To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Look up the word Date sent: Mon, 04 May 1998 08:30:49 PDT Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Angela, I'd not call myself an expert on this... but I have 4 FeLV+ females and all have been spayed. Vet just noted on their records about the status, and gave 10 days of prophylactic antibiotics after the surgeries. I spayed because 1: there were also 2 males (siblings) and 2: my reading's on the subject suggested it was much easier on the cat to undergo the surgery than the repeated heat cycles. The only complications were due to 'stitch picking', not the FeLV. jean -------------------------------------- Date sent: Mon, 4 May 1998 07:16:38 -0400 (EDT) From: Kat To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: You're NOT "Stupid" Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Angela, Don't feel bad - it happens all the time. If your vet didn't even bother to correct you - why should you be so hard on yourself. As to the spaying - yes it should be done - going in and out of heat is just as stressful (if not more so) than the procedure. Tell your vet she's FeLV+ and arrange to have him use another form of anesthesia - one that won't be so stressful to her. Give her some echinacea (herbs) now, before her surgery, and some Rescue Remedy (Bach Flower Essence) just before you take her in - just be sure to withold all food and water from 8PM the night before surgery. Give her alot of love and attention both before and after - and as silly as this sounds - tell her what's going to happen and why. That way she won't feel as if she did something wrong and that she's being punished. If she's on the interferon now, it's probably wise to check with your vet to see if you should continue up thru the surgery, or wait a few days before and after. Good luck and keep us posted! As I am writing this Panther is in surgery, having a tumor taken out. We won't get the results back for 1-2 weeks. The tumor is in the lymph node region of his groin--not a good place, I know. I am hoping for the best but preparing for the worst--with his FELV history and his not being back to his "old self" it is probably going to be malignant. I'll take all the good thoughts and suggestions you all can give. nancy -------------------------------------- Date sent: Mon, 4 May 1998 10:28:18 -0400 To: felvtalk@MailingList.net From: "Michele R. Someone could write a best selling novel with the entertaining stories we have all heard about pet owners discovering the new sex of their pets and the results. Angela, I won't tell you it was easy to have my Gretchen spayed in March, because there was a lot of worry that went along with this. Thankfully, everyone on this list helped with advice, support, prayers, etc. Gretchen is also felv+ and went into heat before I could get her spayed. After experiencing the stress it put upon her I knew it was best for her to be spayed before she went into another heat. She went through the operation like a trooper and except for her small size, you wouldn't know she had felv. You may want to discuss putting Poncho on an antibiotic such as Amoxicillin for a couple of days prior to her operation. The vets usually administer this just before the operation but for the extra added protection, it may be worth considering a couple of added days before. I did this for Gretchen and felt better just knowing she had that little bit of extra help. The antibiotic seemed to interfere with her appetite and I had to entice her to eat by giving her all her favorite foods and "playing" with her with her food, but she did manage to eat a reasonable amount this way. I kept her on the antibiotic for a couple more days after the operation until I felt she was past 'catching" anything that she may have picked up at the vets. She went back to her old good eating habits as soon as she was off the medication and started to regain all her weight she had lost from being in heat and then the poor appetite from the antibiotic. Angela, reading about the extra protective measures you took defleaing Poncho just to keep 'him' safe from harm made me smile and feel so good to think of the love you have for this kitty. There is absolutely no existing theories that flea sprays have any relation to causing felv and anyone that tells you so is seriously misinformed. You are a great mommy to these kitty's. Please keep us informed on the outcome of Poncho's operation, we really do care and will be thinking about you and Poncho. Give your new 'little girl' a hug from Gretchen and Ann. Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Angela, You are definitely NOT an idiot. I could see myself doing exactly the same thing! On a dog, they're big enough to be able to tell, but on a cat, I could not tell without turning them over. I can't answer any of your questions, but I know others can. I just wanted to say it is not your fault about Poncho. You did not give him FELV! And it sounds like you used the spray as carefully as possible. I know that we hear that sprays can compromise immunity, but it does not give FELV to cats! Also, I think about people I know, some good friends, that don't vaccinate for FELV, don't give their pets anything but low brand store food, and use all kinds of chemicals on their pets and yards and their cats NEVER get sick. They live to be old, old, cat with narry a thought about being sick. It's just the luck of the draw as faar as I'm concerned. We can do things to try and help and not do things that we think are harmful, but in the end we have very little control over their destinies. Fortunately, I have to volunteer at my daughter's school tomorrow and will be very busy all day so I won't be able to sit and worry--but I am sure I will find a few second to have mini-panic attacks! -------------------------------------- From: "Claude Horstmann" To: Subject: Re: Panther Date sent: Mon, 4 May 1998 12:46:31 -0400 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi Nancy, I just came on and read your message. Waiting for biopsy reports, and a few having surgery. My son's little Leia is also having her surgery tomorrow. The pins and needles wait is finally over. Let's all say a little prayer, or bow to the east or rub a Budda or whatever you do and keep all of them in mind tomorrow. I will post when I know something about her but I am guessing it will be a rough surgery for such a little one. barb -------------------------------------- From: katseven@pcsia.com Date sent: Mon, 4 May 1998 11:59:04 -0600 Subject: Re: Panther To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Nancy, I am sending many, many good thoughts your way. We live in a fairly small area and it could be that they have to send out to Tulsa, OK. That's where I'd have to take Panther to an oncologist if warranted. Meanwhile, I would like to start him on some Ambrotose. Lynn, or anyone, what are your experiences with ambrotose? Also, is anyone using the DMG? I started to a few days ago with Panther. I had hoped it would increase his stamina which has been questionable/borderline these past months. Susan, thanks again for all you thoughts and prayers. Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Angela First do not feel like an idiot, Rubin was a Ruby for 1 year, till one day we thought "she" was pregnant and as I searched further for the "babies" we discovered that he was a late bloomer. Hence his name Rubin ever since. As far as being spayed or neutered our Sophia tested postive when she was 6 months old and was spayed around the same time. She is now 4 years old. As far as them saying the flea spray was the cause they are wrong, just as Judy said it is a virus. Our first vet was ready to put Rubin to sleep 7 years ago, he is now 12. Good luck with your new kitties.
