Actually I'm very lucky as far as furniture goes--I have 2 cat trees and one post, and most of the cats use that. Occasionally, Panther or one of the other kitties will go behind the couch and scratch it--at least it's BEHIND. They seem to be doing well--keeping my fingers and toes crossed. Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net I am only able to admit this to you guys because the chance of running into you on the street is almost non-existant. I hereby announce that I am the STUPIDEST human on the planet! I got Ponch and Lefty from two different sources about 9 months ago. Lefty was big and healthy and huge for 5 weeks and although they said he was 5 wks. old, Poncho was so TINY that I would be surprised if he was 4. He was so infested with fleas that I was afraid he would become anemic and die so I searched until I found a flea spray that I could use on kittens and took my chances. It took 3 days and many hours of holding him down, finding a flea, dipping my finger in the spray, holding it on the flea and then picking it off. I felt this would be safer than spraying him more than once. I sprayed his bedding and let it dry before I put him back on it. When the fleas were all gone, I bathed and combed him to remove the eggs. He had a rough beginning, and some people have told me that he has feline leukemia because of the sprays I used on him at such an early age. If that is true, I'd rather not know that it was my fault. I did what I HAD to do because I felt his health was in serious jeopardy. Now, all these months later, I discover that my little Poncho is actually a female!!!!!! It is so hard to tell when they are babies and the lady said it was a male and I just never had any reason to be poking around down there! She is black and white (the tuxedo thing) and with her coloring, it is very hard to tell. I even had her to the vet, listed her as a male, and they didn't say any different. I was planning to have her neutered--at the advice of the new vet I found, and then she started acting like she was in heat, I checked and sure enough--HE'S A SHE!!!!! Man, I feel stupid. I have kept her and Lefty separated since I discovered this and I am going to have her spayed this week if possible. Have any of you had this done to a felv+ female? I am going to call around here and if no vet wants to take her (most would rather I just put them both to sleep), I will take her to the one who did Lefty's transfusion. I would just like to hear from some of you who have done this. Is she at higher risk of problems? Would the surgery cause her to show felv symptoms sooner than without it? I know I can't risk having her and Lefty together with them both being positive. I wouldn't bring kittens into the world under that condition--especially since I know I couldn't keep them. Please send me some advice. I really value what you all say. Thanks--and please don't kick me off this list for being an idiot. I pet their faces and ignore the other end as long as the 'stuff' ends up in the litter box!!!!!!! Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Angela, Don't feel to stupid, I think there are others on the list who made similiar errors. Abosolutly do not let her have kittens. They will prob all be positive, that's if she is able to carry them without losing them. As long as she is symptom free, it should not be a problem having her spayed and the stress of constant seasons is harder on her than the surgery. So have it done, the sooner the better. barb -------------------------------------- Date sent: Sun, 03 May 1998 20:17:28 +0100 To: felvtalk@MailingList.net From: BILL BEAMISH Subject: Re: Look up the word "Stupid"--It's ME! Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Angela, Please don't be so hard on yourself! My cat Abby is a "he". He was a wild street cat when we got him, he's all white and deaf, and when I first brought him in to the vet to be tested and given shots, they were too afraid to lift his tail to check if he was male or female because he was so wild! Lol! The vet said he "thought" he was a female so I named him Abby. He tested positive for leukemia (BTW, that was almost 12 years ago!) so we just brought him home and it took maybe 2 months to tame him enough so we could get him back to the vet. THEN the vet said he was a neutered male! Well, he's deaf so we just kept the name Abby and besides, aren't some men named Abby? Like Abby Hoffman? Anyway, since we have a hospice for positive cats, we have had positive cats spayed and neutered several times. I really can't think of any problems we've had but I do try to keep the stress level as low as possible. Didn't Ann just get Gretchen spayed with no problems? Maybe she could reassure you, too. Another thing - I can't imagine its at all possible for any flea spray to give a cat leukemia! Feline Leukemia is caused by a virus. You did what you had to to get the fleas off her, otherwise she most certainly would have died of anemia from the fleas. We have had to have stray kittens transfused on several occasions when they came in so anemic from flea infestations. Those fleas are nasty little buggers and I believe you saved her life by getting rid of them! Don't let anyone tell you it caused her leukemia. Take care and good luck with her! Really, that's not stupid at all. Many of us would assume the same thing if it got by the vet. Also, if she's wearing a tuxedo.... Let us know how Poncho fairs. I believe Ann's Gretchen (felv+) was also in heat when she was spayed, and she did fine. My sister in law who works with the humane society gave me these two baby kitties last summer. She said they had all of their shots and were "fixed". So, I didn't think any more of it. I just took care of them. Well, last week, I noticed that one of them was awfully fat and "pregnant"! The next day she gave birth to four babies.....three black and one striped. It has been so long since I have had a mama and babies. The mama is healthy and hopefully so are her babies. So that is my little story...........Lynn(Stinker) -------------------------------------- Date sent: Sun, 03 May 1998 22:00:05 -0400 To: felvtalk@MailingList.net From: Angela Holderby Subject: Re: Look up the word "Stupid"--It's ME!
