The vet I use actually does it in the home for a fee and Tucker left us while on our bed. If there was ever to be a time it was yesterday. He had stopped eating, could hardly walk, and was even moaning. I wish his last day would have been better. He was so ill, and the very end will haunt me for the rest of my life. The vet's protocol was all IV [no IM] and Tucker just didn't like IV needles. So basically, he went out crying. Theres no way to sugar coat it. Fortunately, it was fast-less then a minute. Due to my lack of religious beliefs It was an even harder decision than most have I believe. If I was confident that I was sending him to a better place my grief would be tempered a bit, but if I just sent him into blackness...thats a whole different story. My philospohy is that pain is better than nothing at all for eternity. However, thats just something Ill have to come to terms with on my own. Of course, right now I am in terrible pain--despite all the support from family and friends I am receiving. Like most traumatic life experiences, I expect the pain to last for a long time and gradually fade to a manageable level--yet never go away. So now I am another name on the list of people who lost his best friend to this horrible disease, another message on the mailing list that frightens all who read it--evoking thoughts of how long there own best friend/child will last. If theres anything I can leave you with from my experience is to do your best to enjoy what time you do have and, when the time does come, realize that although you think no one is feeling the same devasting loss that you are experiencing, in truth you are not alone. Well what now? Finals...can you imagine the fact that I have to study for 4 law school exams feeling like I do right now? Its a nightmare--all my notes are tear stained. I cant sit at my desk for more than an hour at a time no matter how hard I try. I have requested that Tucker be individually cremated and I will have his remains returned to me. I plan to look for some sort of "ash-locket" so I can carry him with me around my neck for the rest of my life. And to Tucker, if your out there buddy...I miss you so much, and if nothing else good comes out of this, know that when my time comes, whenever it may be, I will no longer be afraid to die because if there is a heaven I know you will be there waiting for me. And, then, hopefully, we'll never be apart again. Until then...if there is a heaven, indulge yourself in as much Turkey as you can eat and scratch the hell out of God's couch--Ill pick up the tab as soon as I can. Good Boy. Thanks All And Tucker I Love You Glen Zipper In Memory of Tucker: September 15, 1991-April 30, 1998. P.S. As for my "Humorous" title for this message--I just wanted to inject some light into this morbid communication--just to let you guys know that Im not suicidal or anything. Also, if anyone was as cool as Elvis it was Tucker--so In a weird sort of way it was appropriate. -------------------------------------- From: WORKPARK Date sent: Fri, 1 May 1998 17:50:05 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Rissa-Tai's cancer is gone Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi all, Now, before everyone gets all excited, we have not checked on her FeLV+ status. What I'm talking about is the plasma cell myoloma that she had. Let me start from the beginning. We went to the vet for her weekly checkup today, and she gained another 7 ounces - up to pounds. She got her Immunoregulin and DepoMedrol injections *(see my note at the bottom of this post concerning this), and they ran a pcv on her again. They said she was doing well, that she was a lot more active - good for her, not necessarily so for them. :) I asked about her Protein Electrophoresis, and the tech said that the monoclomal gammopathy that she had is now a polyclomal gammopathy, which is better. I made an appointment for two weeks from today, as I figure she could try that with the Immunoregulin since she has been doing so much better. If she doesn't do so well waiting that long, we'll go back to once a week. When I got home, I called the Oncologist to get a better explanation of what was going on. Dr. Klein told me that she was in shock when she saw her Protein Electrophoresis, as it was dramatically improved. Her Gammaglobulins are back in the normal ranges, and it only shows a slight elevation in the beta region instead of the gamma region, where it was before (Barb, we can probably use your help in explaining this stuff), and only shows a slight inflammation. Everything is so much better, and looks normal. I asked her if this was the first test result she saw if she would have thought Rissa-Tai had cancer, and she said no, she wouldn't think that, that you wouldn't even know she ever had that cancer. So it's gone!!! We'll check her bloodwork in two weeks, see how she is doing, and then decide whether to start eh chemo at a low dose again or not. Obviously, it helped, and she has been off of it since April 10 or so. We're very very happy over here! I'll post again when I have her bloodwork results. Pam *Regarding the DepoMedrol injections - for those of you who are finding it difficult to administer the prednisone - we decided to do this when Rissa-Tai was unable to tolerate pills while taking the Doxycycline and Baytrill. It's an injection of a steroid that is long-lasting, from two to four weeks. It only cost $2.00 and $6.00 for the injection cost. It is really worth it for the less amount of stress for her, in not having to take the pill, and for us, in not having to give it! And the results are pretty good as well. -------------------------------------- Date sent: Fri, 01 May 1998 16:27:35 +0000 From: LawBet Organization: Home for Wayward Felines To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Tucker Has Left the Building Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Glen, Sure sorry to hear about Tucker. We win some battles; we lose some battles; but the war goes on. I am, in no way, attempting to alter your religious beliefs. I just give you a little food for thought: If there is truly no God, heaven or hell, what is, indeed, our purpose for being here? Why is there right and wrong? Why is there light and dark? Why is there good and evil? Why is there free will? I firmly believe you will be with Tucker in a much better place and I also firmly believe you will have to make good on your claim to reimburse God for his couch (along with all the rest of us who have lost our little ones)! Sleep soft, dear Tucker. I know that you both fought so hard. I'm also glad that your vet was able to come to your apartment to save you the agonizing trip, that Tucker was able to leave you in a place where he was comfortable, at home, and unafraid. I'm not that religious either, but I do believe that when our furbabies die they go to a place that is free of pain, where they are at their best, and they can run, play, chase butterflies, eat their favorite treats...you get the idea. Some part of him will always be with you, and I'm sure his spirit, or life force, or whatever you wish to think of it as, is watching out for you and over you. Also, some part of me believes that Tucker called out to that stray (Tompkins?) that you helped to make a better life for him as well. His spirit lives on in that kind of an act. Good luck with your finals, I know you will get through this. Just take one day at a time. Once the gingivitis and soreness set in, I'm really not sure what you could do to alleviate that. The enzymatic toothpaste is one of the things to do before an FELV cat gets oral problems, it works to dissolve plaque etc. before a problem occurs. I'd really like to know myself what to do for Stinker's mouth, the concern being that it interferes dreadfully with eating. -- Steve -------------------------------------- Date sent: Fri, 1 May 1998 14:08:29 -0400 (EDT) From: Kat To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Liver Shake for cats Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi all, I received this recipe from another list I'm on - haven't had a reason to try it yet (knock on wood) but thought someone out there might be interested. It doesn't sting, but makes them deaden and shrivel up. It was also used on (human) babies mouths when they had thrush. I don't know about cats, but it might be worth asking Dr Meyers about any cautions/counterindications in cats. But then, does God really run to Hertz Rent-A-Couch every week to get a new one? I doubt it. I suspect he knew what would happen when he let cats domesticate us. Our furniture would be history. That, and losing them back to him, is the price we pay for having the joy of them in our lives. Tucker sounds like he was a very special cat.
