Except for the on-hand amount, those amounts shown are my best estimates for the total required to get our list host the necessary system and 19" monitor, plus shipping costs and taxes. As you know, the large 19" monitor is required due to Jim being legally blind and he must have a large screen in order to do the work he is doing for all of us. Current on hand----------------------$1,180 Known due-in------------------------- 150 Projected as of 1 May 1998-----------$1,330 Estimated Outlay: Computer System----------------------$ 900 19" Monitor-------------------------- 800 Shipping Costs----------------------- 150 Taxes (at Illinois rate)------------- 100 TOTAL---------------$1,950 Current Shortfall-----------$ 620 I emphasize these are estimates. If we end up with more than we need, I will forward the remainder to Jim to apply to the cost of running the list ($60/year) which he takes out of his own pocket. If any of you have any objections to this, please advise by private e-mail. Many of you folks have already been extremely generous and I thank each and every one of you for that generosity. Some have even donated twice and a very SPECIAL thanks to you. We are so very close and having the system to Jim, and operational, by Memorial Day is looking better and better. Those of you who wish to donate and have not yet done so, your doing so would be most appreciated. I must stress again the importance of keeping any donation within your means. We all know that caring for the little ones can be an expensive proposition and their proper care must come first. Any amount will be gratefully accepted. Those who wish more information concerning the project, where to send the donation, and who to make it payable to, may obtain that information by sending me a private e-mail at my e-mail address shown above. Since I have no intention of broadcasting my snail-mail address to the world, I will respond by private e-mail also. At the risk of being redundant, we're so close. It won't take much more to get there. If we can just squeeze out a little more, we'll have it made. Give me a Redd Foxx heart attack and let it pour!!! I hope, that maybe he will pull out of it for a while, but regardless, you have done a wonderful job with him. Just love him and be happy together in the time the two of you have left. Pam P.S. I'm also glad you found a home for Tompkins, even if someone beat Naomi to it. The couple you found sound wonderful. It restores my faith that others would take in a cat with an illness like that. Hopefully, you will be able to find out more about this friend of his, and rescue that cat as well. You've done great!!!! -------------------------------------- From: WORKPARK Date sent: Tue, 28 Apr 1998 03:45:07 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Steve Is Adopted Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Oh Steve, I am so so happy for you! We are lucky to have each other. Almost everyone on this list has had to deal with impending or actual loss of beloved companions. I have found in dealing w/ Ernie's passing that I needed (&sometimes still need) to talk about him to others who are experiencing this pain. Besides relying on this group of lovely, extraordinary people, I have used the following sources: http://www.petloss.com/ http://www.netwalk.com/~copydoc/petloss.htm http://www.foreverpets.com/FP-Petloss.html It is difficult for me to imagine what makes a person capable of such disregard for life as you speak of even though I know it is very common. I wonder if giving your sister-in-law the phone # of local animal rescue operations would help. The first part of his post was contributed by Barbara von Buddenbrock of South Africa who has worked for a manufacturer of natural remedies and has therefore had some training regarding the use of vitamins. She says she doesn't like mega doses PERIOD! She goes on to say that nature supplies what nature needs. We do not keep our cats in a natural environment - therefore we have to resort to certain unnatural measures. She would not give a cat more than 25mg (approx) per day. If she suspects FUS (struvite crystals), then she has given the cat 300mg immediately to get acid into the urine as quickly as possible and dissolve the crystals. On that theory she would assume that mega doses would create acidic problems so one would have to be very careful - the kidneys flush it out, but what happens if the kidneys are not so good? She tends to go on the conservative side. She had a discussion with her pharmacist about this and the pharmacist said the probable idea behind the dosing of Vit C is to boost the immune system and also that if given too much the cats will get diarrhea. A friend in California talked with her vet about Vit C and he said his's heard people claim that you can cure about any feline ailment with it's use, but he's been unable to substantiate any positive effects. Although he doesn't believe it's gong to necessarly help much, he said it can't hurt either and it would be okay to try! *Steve's caution on only using sodium ascorbate is prudent here. I tend to fear that there isn't a definitive answer on the megadosing with Vit C, but I will continue to search for more information and pass it on. Incidently, in the last post I said I had posted a test to Dr. Belfield's email address - I had heard nothing back from there, so posted again this morning. Will keep you informed. He was addressing the subject of media messages and Web sites and said that his experience has been that messages and sites sponsored by medical product and pharmaceutical companies regulated by the FDA have a high level of accuracy. However, he said that you need to be particularly wary of information from people who sell health products without any evidence they are a bona fide business under the scrutiny of a regulatory agency such as the FDA or the FTC. Information that you get on-line, he says, must be treated in the same way you deal with information you get any other way: Always consider the source. Compare more than one source of information. Ask other consumers/patients what they think. If appropriate, check with a trusted health professional before trying something that may be harmful.
