Smolenski" Organization: PNC Bank & Angstrom Incorporated To: pufferino@aol.com Subject: FeLV I just adopted a cat who is 2 years old and Feline Leukemia positive. After many discussions with the rescue league lady she was VERY confidant that Dexter would live out a longer life than the usual 4 years that most seem to. She indicated that her vet, Dr. Meerhoff, who sits on the Board of Governors, thought Big D would just be one of those cats who tests positive all his long life. I only know a little about his background: found in a quarry left to die, taken into a house but was an outdoor cat until the teenage jerks stoned and shot him with a pellet gun. He was taken to the vets and tested positive on the ELISA test at that time, neutered shortly after. He was then given to a shelter where he remained for a little over a year until I decided to take him. I have had him for a month now and when I called Dr. Meerhoff for his blood work results I was told that he had less than 2 years left. A far cry from the original prognosis given to me for him. I am both angry and upset; I don't have much of a stomach for this kind of thing and thought I made that clear to the shelter lady. But since I have been entrusted with his care, I am frantically trying to read up on FeLV as much as I can. However, I am finding all the information very overwhelming. The odds are really stacked against him, but I want to do whatever I can to help him combat this thing. I have received the packet of information that Joan Doljan mails out, but I can't decipher what to give this cat. I don't know what the exact situations were for the cats detailed and when they started to administer their choice of elixers. I don't know which serum to give him, nor for how long. I want to do what is best, any suggestions? Here is a profile of 'D': Neutered Male 2 years old (has been through a lot of stress in the past) tests positive for ELISA and IFA (will call for white and red blood cell counts) outward clinical signs: he drinks a lot and urinates frequently he does sneeze a little by any other right he appears healthy and normal the only other issue is that he is a finicky eater - he will engulf dry cat food, but basically ignores 'natural foods' I am also trying to locate a holistic vet near the Pittsburgh, PA but to no avail. I called one, but he hasn't returned my calls. I am desperate. I want to give him a fighting chance. Please help if you can. Thank you for your time. I sincerely hope he either makes a come-back or goes peacefully to the bridge. You have my empathy and understanding. Warm thoughts. The vet's assistant said it is different for every cat and I understand that. He is just doing so great now that I am amazed, but every time he lays down to take a nap, I start to panic and think he's getting bad again. The vet said "if his body doesn't start to produce it's own red cells, he could be in dire condition real fast". How fast is real fast? Should I be optimistic at this point, or do all cats do this well immediately after a transfusion. I have no experience in this area. I am thrilled for the good days he has had and is having, but I am afraid to get my hopes up. Do any of you have anything on this? Thanks. If you haven't found a home for that kitty yet, PLEASE!!! write back to me tonight. I found a home for him. Guess who? ME!!! My mom gave in! The reason I'm asking you to write back is that I'm going into the city tomorrow and could come over there. Otherwise, I'm not sure when I can get in next. Sorry I'm telling you this so late, but I just got home. If you don't get this tonight, early tomorrow morning would be okay. I'm not sure exactly what time we're leaving. Whatever, just write back as soon as you get this. My dad knows his way around Brooklyn pretty well, so if you give me directions, we shouldn't have a problem finding your place. Well, now I guess I just have to hope you check your email pretty soon. :-) Anxiously waiting, Naomi -------------------------------------- To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Date sent: Sun, 26 Apr 1998 21:00:38 -0400 Subject: Tompkins From: naohalloran@juno.com (Naomi J O'Halloran) Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Glenn, Hi, I tried to get in touch with you last night, but I guess it was too late. Did you get my messages? The first one I sent didn't come back to me on the list, so I think it may not have gone through. My mom decided late last night that I could take the kitty, and I was going into the city today, so I was going to try to meet you while I was there. Anyway, if you still need a home for him, I could probably make arrangements to get in there one morning this week or something. Let me know. Thanks! Hope he's doing well!
