Try to buy free-range chicken when I can, and I even find free-range turkey sometimes. My cats love lamb, too, but it's really expensive. As for the vitamins, if you're using the Anitra Frazier mix, you might think about just adding sodium ascorbate. You have Diane Stein's book, don't you? Starting on page 21 she discusses using Belfield's or Frazier's or Pitcairn's nutritional supplements. Qetta's appearance should get even nicer. My cats all got more muscular (less "fluffy"!), and feel really heavy compared to their size. Glad to here everyone is doing OK! Date: Fri, 24 Apr 1998 19:22:58 -0700 Dear Dana, Being as you are using the webmaster address, I'm getting this too... Dr. Dhein is crd@vetmed.wsu.edu if you want to talk to her directly... I ran your URL (it is HTML not HTM1 as written). The article says that the FeLV testing was performed here. I doubt if we had any information that these animals were part of a treatment trial. This kind of testing is one of the many services we offer practitioners in the region. Kind of like saying something you received in the mail was "Provided by the US Government". I'm not able to discuss the implications of vit C causing reactor (+) cats to convert to negative. Knowing what I know about this virus I'd be very skeptical about eliminating the viral code from the cell's DNA. IF this is really happening, I'd worry about the treatment interfering with the test rather than eliminating the virus. However it is very interesting. Again, my area of specialty is not immunology, so I don't know very much about how the mechanics of the test work. Good luck in your studies and thanks for bringing this to us. You'll find lots of useful info on this mailing list, and lots of people to assist you with advice and support. Have you taken a look at the FAQ sheet? There is a section there dealing with food and supplements. Also, there is a question dealing with Hemobart. Has Howling Kitty been tested for this? It is a nasty parasite that destroys their red blood cells and causes furher anemia, and the cats don't like to eat when extremely anemic. Is this why he is on an antibiotic? If so, which kind? If he still refuses to eat, you might want to get some a/d from the vet. It is a canned food, available from the vet only, consistancy of gruel that is chock full of vitamins and protein. It can be easily force-fed to him if necessary, but hopefully you won't have to do that. Pet-Tinic is the best iron supplement to give him, and it comes in liquid form, also from your vet. And don't forget about keeping him hydrated as well - this is also very important. Interferon, although seems to really help, can/will eventually cause depression if used every day over long periods of time. How long has he been taking it? Nutrical, although the topic of hot debate lately on the list, is also an excellent source of vitamins. Two tablespoons a day will give him all the nutrition he needs. I also recently asked about the easiest way to give pills without the stomach upset. Dr. Myers, a vet who helps us out from time to time on the list here, suggested coating the pills with butter or margarine to make them go down easier. When Rissa-Tai, my + cat, first got sick we got her to eat her pills on her own by coating them with cream cheese (however, that only lasted two months or so before we had to figure out something else - but it also caused less stress for everyone when she ate them on her own without being forced). Please post and let us know if you have any other questions. We're all here to help. They have a website at: www.swheatscoop.com and a list of distributors at the site. Also a phone #-- 800-794-3287. Most of my cats didn't mind that I switched litters. I had to mix one of the pans with the clay and Swheat Scoop together for a week or so for some of the cats that objected until they became accustomed to the new product. If you go to the site you may want to read what they have to say about the clumping litters. This stuff clumps, too, which makes clean-up easier. Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net As I said yesterday, the vet sent Lefty home with Pet-tinic (1 cc twice a day), an antibiotic: Baytril 20 mg. (1/2 pill twice a day), and Interferon (.01 cc every day for 7 days then off for 7). She also recommended the same Interferon dosage for Poncho who is + but has no symptoms as yet. My question is this: Do I need to add any other vitamins in addition to the Pet-tinic? And, they said Poncho doesn't need the Pet-tinic, unless I just want to give it to him occasionally. Should I go ahead and get him on those as well even though he appears healthy now? They also suggested having Poncho re-tested for the virus. One vet said wait a few months, the lady I took Lefty to for the transfusion said they usually wait 3 weeks. What is your opinion on this? I have heard some of the discussion on Vitamin C, but I missed a lot due to mail problems and just joining the group a week ago. If any of you have an opinion on vitamin C you would be willing to share, please mail me privately if you would. The vet who did the transfusion has another vet in her practice who uses holistic treatments, acupuncture and massage therapy, etc. She said she could get any type of herbs that I wanted to try also. Could someone write to me and let me know what some opinions are on this as well. I am trying to do what I can to keep Lefty as healthy as he seems now. I am almost ashamed to say this, but he just about drove me nuts last night. He has always slept with me, but last night he just about 'loved me to death". Is it possible that the drugs have made him hyper? He licked my face and sucked on my ear-lobes and rubbed his face all over mine--I was thrilled that he was feeling so good, but I would like to have gotten a little bit of sleep. Maybe he was just thrilled to be home. He got in bed with each of my kids for awhile and even nuzzled my husband's face and he knows the consequences for that is usually being flung off the bed into the closet door (Mark nearly did that to me when I was pregnant and thought I was dying of a kidney stone and woke him to take me to the hospital--he doesn't react well when he is awakened! BUT, he's a pretty neat guy once he wakes up.) Usually Lefty will settle down and go to sleep quite fast, but last night he was a wild-cat all night. I finally got up and sat in the living room with him for awhile so he would quit walking across hubby's face. Is that common on interferon or maybe the other stuff? This isn't a serious problem and I don't mean to complain about it because given the choice between him walking all over me and keeping me awake or laying in the floor getting skinny and looking miserable, I can learn to live without sleep! Any opinions are welcome. I can't understand why so many vets are not more encouraged using the 2. I'm sure I've given my history with interferon and immunoregulin and I've had very good luck. My vet clinic uses interferon a lot on several animals and seems quite satisfied that it definitely does some good. I took Jake in yesterday for his monthly shot of immunoregulin and my vet said too how remarkable bothe he and Panther were doing--it's been six months. At any rate I am so happy to hear how well Lefty is doing; my advice to you (and I promise it won't be much), is have faith in the treatments and at the same time, be thankful for each day you have with him (I know you already are). You will also need leather armor and a significant amount of courage... take care, .marilyn. -------------------------------------- Date sent: Sat, 25 Apr 1998 11:04:20 -0500 (CDT) From: "Nancy A. I agree with Steven that Interferon is cheaper and easier to use, but I have had so much luck with Immunoregulin (One cat it was used on--without interferon--improved to the point of looking and acting completely normal!). the blood tests are necessary to monitor the anemia and while they are expensive, I use them regularly. I feel more confident that way knowing their blood is doing what it should. Nancy -------------------------------------- Date sent: Sat, 25 Apr 1998 11:09:04 -0500 (CDT) From: "Nancy A. The only other thing she was getting was Pet-Tinic. Since I have used Pet-tinnic on my FELV+ animals when they were NOT on Interferon or immunoregulin, and they still developed the anemia, I surmise it was the Immunoregulin that helped her. I dunno; it's just my opinion. I've never had a kitty with FeLv before and I want to do everything I can to keep Howling Kitty as comfortable as possible. As to Hemobart, I dont think they tested for this. They did some extensive blood work on him. I'll find out on Monday when I take him in for a follow up if they tested him for this. He has been on Interferon for 6 days. He is taking one dose of Baytril (antibiotic) daily with 1 tablet of Prednizone. Push really has come to shove. He really will not allow the pills in his mouth without a fight. I really afraid I'll injure his jaw. I've coated the pills in everything from butter, margarine, mayonnaise, oils to syrup. I've tried crushing them up and putting them in broth and feeding in a syringe. The vet and I will have to have another talk. That I can see. Surely, there must be some other alternative to the pills! Thanks for any input-My kitty friends and I appreciate all of you. P.S. My cats were current with all their vaccinations when Howling Kitty became ill. The other two have been tested and I will know on Monday the outcome. Keep a good thought. -------------------------------------- From: "James G. Rubin's bloodwork was not good news, his wbc count is 700 and red not much better at 14. We have decided no more treatments for him he needs to live out his last days or whatever he has in peace. He still has his appetite and is still very alert. He has fought a long hard battle and is conitiung the fight. We have him home now he is resting and is still alert and is comfortable. Dr. Ader said that he will continue to grow weaker loose his appetite and then eventually he will die. It is still hard we knew that this would come to this. He could still surprise us who knows. We will let you all know. Sophia is still well thankfully. He has a cat, Pee-wee, who is three and is vaccinated, neutered, but is now showing up a weak FeLV+ without symptoms. Pee-wee is currently being kept caged in the basement, at least for a few days. He has two indoor cats, two outdoor cats, and feeds five others, so does not want to keep him, although he is hoping that he reverts to negative status again. I gave him the info for the mailing list, hopefully he will make contact with us here, but in the meantime, I told him I would get the URLs for those sites that will help him find a home for Pee-wee. I also told him about the no-kill shelter here in town. He also asked me if I knew of any other places in the state. I mentioned that I knew of AZ-HART in the Phoenix area (Irene, I hope this was ok with you) and told him I would post that he was looking for a home. If someone could please repost those sites, I know they were posted recently (for Tucker's dad, I think) I'd appreciate it, so I will have them the next time he calls. I spoke to my vet again about listing on the site for vets willing to use the newer methods. She is interested but is worried about getting to emotionally involved with her patients. She is worried she will get flooded with more positive cats then she can handle. I know she gets just as frustrated as we do when Rissa-Tai drops, but she was practically jumping out of her skin with excitement when she called a little while ago to tell me the good news about Rissa-Tai. So, for right now, until a few other things change, she wants to wait - but may say yes in the future. Here's to hoping... Thanks for the info, I'd like to help this gut, but I'm worried for the cat if he is unable to find a home for it. Sounds like your baby was extremely happy to be home! I don't think his "loving you to death" was from the drugs. My cats always purr even in the car ride home, they are so happy to be away from the vet's. It always makes me so happy to hear they are so lovey.
