The kitty-litter appetite is the behavior caused by the anemia, and many of us have experienced that phenomenon. Ask your Vet about the possibility of adding an iron supplement such as Pet-Tinic. (B vits and iron) The pills, .. can you crush them and add a little broth or tuna water and feed them via dropper or syringe? Or better yet, get them in liquid form? Be grateful for small favors, the fact that Howling is eating anything, is definitely a plus. The Antibiotic can cause loss of appetite too. Make sure to keep Howling hydrated too, don't forget the water. catch ya later, .marilyn. -------------------------------------- Date sent: Fri, 24 Apr 1998 11:39:53 -0700 From: Dana Crow Organization: Magical Moments Preschool To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: [Fwd: Re: Mega C Plus & Feline Leukemia] Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net This is the letter I sent to the university. I actually clicked on the highlighted underlined words in Dr. Belfield's piece on FelV. That gave me the contact that replied to this query. Now what do we make of it? They (at least she) doesn't know anything about this product or study. The plot thickens!!!! Dana Date sent: Fri, 24 Apr 1998 08:25:18 -0700 (PDT) From: "Cheryl R. What a difference! He has been eating non-stop and has a whole lot more energy. I found a vet close to home to give the immunoregulon injections. This lady told me not to be too hopeful though. She said that this disease is a virus and cannot be treated and the best we could hope for is to *attempt* to boost their immune systems with these drugs. The first vet was more optimistic. This one said that I would be lucky to have a 50 percent chance of doing any good. That was kind of depressing. I guess I will just have to enjoy every good minute and try to not think about what could be ahead. Right now, I am just happy to have Lefty climbing all over me and purring in my face again. They sent him home with interferon, antibiotics, Pet-tinic and I was told to have him injected with the immuno-regulon twice a week for a few weeks and then more blood work. Does this sound about right? She said if the blood work shows he is responding that I could go to once a week and then every other week with the injections. Just wanted to run this by you all to see what you thought. Kat -------------------------------------- From: "Steve Lackow" To: Subject: Re: Lefty's home Date sent: Fri, 24 Apr 1998 12:58:12 -0700 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Angela, it is indeed a matter of lengthening Lefty's life with you and making it a good quality of life. The efforts that Chloe and I made gave us an extra year together, and it was priceless, and bonded us closely due to the every-day nature of providing care. She was such an ideal little patient. The only thing I'm concerned about are the frequent immunoregulin injections and more blood tests, etc. There's no clinical proof that any of this works, and it's one thing to use interferon which is cheap and easily administered, and quite another to subject Lefty to lots of shots, vet visits, blood work, not to mention the cost. But let's see what the next few weeks bring, and I'm sure others will chime in that the immunoregulin therapy is worthwhile. -- Steve -------------------------------------- From: "Claude Horstmann" To: Subject: Re: Mega C Date sent: Fri, 24 Apr 1998 16:03:30 -0400 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Steve: On the bio page of the website it opens with the statement * the Vet drew 2000 mg of sodium ascorbate into a syringe and injected it into a dog and so begins the story of Orthomolecular Medicine.* So I guess that answers the question as to what type of Vit C he is using. Now, the 800 pound monkey question: Where do you get Sodium Ascorbate-I've been calling local Health Food Stores and so far have come up empty. And is Vit C with Bioflavinoids that states a non-acidic form of Vit C safe to use ? I have used it, still use it and will continue to use it. BUT, it is not a cure, never was, never will. The hope is that it will stimulate the immune system and assist the cat in holding off all the opportunistic bugs that hit our felv cats. I have a house full of cats (16) every once and while I will have an URI roar thru and without exception, the cats on monthly ImmunoRegulin have been the only ones NOT to get it. Not even a sneeze. But to get to that monthy shot, I went thru the twice weekly, then once weekly etc. To my knowledge, however, it prob will not effect the blood work except many help the WBC count. It will not help anemia that I am aware of. As with ALL of the drugs we try, foods, vitamins ect. there is none out there will cure, unfortunately. That is our ultimate goal but the short term goal is to keep them as healthy as we can for as long as we can. Right now, that is the best we can do. And ImmunoRegulin is not expensive. I paid $18 a shot and that included the office call. barb -------------------------------------- Date sent: Fri, 24 Apr 1998 17:10:27 -0700 From: Robert Frank Organization: A.R.F., Inc. I personally cannot even drink OJ with out getting heartburn from the acid. Vit C, is an acid, a weak one, as acids go, but an acid. barb -------------------------------------- From: Newtanator Date sent: Fri, 24 Apr 1998 20:38:07 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Howling Kitty Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Arlene, A couple of quick things. Are your other two cats vaccinated? If not, they should be tested and vaccinated. Then, you might consider a B12 shot. Even with additives such as Pet Tinic, it wouldn't hurt. Also, why is Howling on an antibiotic? Does he have an upper respiratory infection or something? FeLV is a virus. Antibiotics are useless against it. I could be the antibiotic that is making him not want to eat. I know when you are new to the group it seems a little overwhelming at first, but you'll catch on. Welcome to the group. barb -------------------------------------- From: Newtanator Date sent: Fri, 24 Apr 1998 20:41:41 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: [Fwd: Re: Mega C Plus & Feline Leukemia] Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Dana, If I am reading this right, this guy has linked his site into a university site and that university seems to know nothing about him or his product. Guess I don;t need to send you any. I find my two furballs have twice as much energy and are more playful when they take their shots. They are on maintenance now. They get one shot a month. Kitty is taking a few more because she has a kidney infection (something she has had her whole life). I also think the interferon helps. I give them extra vitamins and nutrients. I'll do anything to make their quality and length of life better and longer. I think you will see a difference immediately when they take their shots. Glad Lefty has a great mom. Keep us all posted. I thought 3 cats took a lot of time, I can't begin to think how much time you spend with your kitties. I just may look into purchasing some of this and try Gretchen on it, it can't hurt, I hope. From what you told me it sounds as though you are doing just about all that can be done for your kitties. Is everything you put into the meals organic? Gretchen doesn't have any symptoms of felv and I think that feeding her organically at the beginning got her on her feet. I am slacking off a bit now because she is getting into Honey's mixture of dry IAMS and Science Diet. (Honey just turns her nose up at anything else no matter how hard I have tried.) Gretchen is now eating one meal a day that I make her and the other is dry food. Qetta is also doing exactly as Gretchen does. I've noticed a difference on Qetta's fur since he has been eating 1 meal of meat, veggies and grains mixed with the Vita Mineral Mix as per Anitra Frazier's book. Now I'm wondering if I should start them on the Mega C Plus if it would be too much when I also do the Vita Mineral Mix plus the 250mg of Vitamin C daily, then the 400 Vit E and 10,000 A & 400 D once weekly. I'm going to think about this a bit. Ann M -------------------------------------- END
