My dad just called me back, and I was right--he can't have any animals in his place, but he said he'd do his best to help find somebody for the little guy. Now I've got him going crazy over him. He's such a cat lover--must be where I got it from. If he finds someone before you do, I'll let you know. My boyfriend and I are probably going in there on Sunday, so we'll see if he's had any luck. It is a bit pricey. I bummed the bucks to get it, but it works! It stops the spraying. And it reduces stress for the cats, and promotes cat harmony. I couldn't believe it. She is so much like Sasha that she is probably her guardian angel. But if she doesn't put her attitude to rest, she may not make it back. (HA, HA) Keep your fingers crossed for the 5th of May. Thats when she gets her teeth pulled. They are also going to take another Lukemia test to make sure that she is negative. Once we get through this it should be fine, except for the attitude. Actually it's kind of cute to watch my big toms side step her. Thanks for writing back. Carol from Vancouver -------------------------------------- From: "James G. I'm sorry if I seemed defensive but when someone questions whether my father is upholding his oath as a veterinarian it tends to put me on the defensive. You must understand that his products are vitamin supplements. As it happens he has been able to treat various illnesses with these supplements. My defensivness is not due false claims it is due to the way your request for more information came across. What makes you think that his claims are unsubstantiated? The reason I reponded first was because you did not even give a formal name that Dr. Belfield could repond to not to mention that the address is for orders and questions about order status. I would like to know what or who you would consider hard and multiple evidence. Maybe the fact that Dr. Belfield's holistic approach to treating illnesses has been published in a veterinary text book. There was enough evidence for the writers of this text book, who are veterinarians, to ask Dr. Belfield to write a chapter on how to treat animals through vitamin therapy. My remark about the vaccine was not ment to be defensive but to make a point. Have you asked the makers why cats still get the virus after they've been vaccinated. I'm sure they have the hard evidence that you would want to prove that the vaccine is a preventative for this virus. Once again don't take this comment defensively but I'm trying to make a point. Dr. Belfield is not trying to get rich off of pet lovers and I'm sorry but I resented that accusation. Why would you think that a man who has spent the better part of his life trying to provide safe and effective treatments for his clients would be out to get rich off of unsuspecting pet lovers? Once again I appologise for any defensiveness in my previous e-mail but you must understand that your e-mail did not state who you were. Your request was not just a request for information but a question of Dr. Belfield's ethics. I'm sorry, but I also feel that anyone who is questioning someone's ethics has a right to know who is questioning this. As Dr. Belfield's daughter I resented the tone of your e-mail which is why I felt compelled to answer you first. I've been told it comes in different scents. My problem is 2 of my kitties (actually, one is mine and one is my sisters who's been visiting for about 9 months now) don't get along and mine has chosen to stay in the bedroom. This works out for the most part, she seems happy in there but I'm worried that when my sister gets the money to take her cats, my kitty will be afraid to come out of the bedroom, so I want to start doing something now. Do I buy this at the Vets. or can I get it at the health food store? Barb, I know you said you were using this, is it having any affect? Any info would be appreciated...Thanks everyone. Thanks for all your inquiries about him. Note to anyone who might want to adopt Tompkins: He has NO symptoms of Felv, and a couple of vets that have seen him belive that he may be one of the lucky ones who is just a carrier. He is probably a middle aged cat and odds are that he didn't contract the virus recently. Other than that he's got some stitches from the wound which will obviously going to heal and the poor guy has no teeth, probably the result of an oral infection that didn't receive treatment. But WOW, and Im not just saying this--he is literally the friendliest cat I have ever met. He loves to sit on my lap and purr and gives me some really intense "head-butts". He eats like a HORSE, wet food only of course (didn't mean to rhyme). He's black and white with greyish-blue-green eyes. Truly cute. Oh yes, and these incredibly cute black lips. Ive never seen anything like it before. He looks like he's wearing lip liner--I don't mean like black fur around the mouth, I mean black lips. As far as me going to a fourth cat. 1-my apartment is too small to begin with for 3 cats; 2-being a law student, having one cat dying from Felv plus having 2 other CrAzY cats its almost too much to handle, and 3- as you all know, if one of my cats gets sick I HAVE TO treat it and if I had to incurr yet another financial liability it would bust me b/c I live off financial aid. Believe me, If I wish I could keep him. So, let me know what you guys come up with--Ill see what I can do around here. -------------------------------------- Date sent: Thu, 23 Apr 1998 13:22:07 -0400 From: Glen Zipper To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Tucker's Cloudy Eye Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hey Guys, Tucker's latest ailment: one of his eyes is cloudier than the other and seems to have a little red in the actual iris of the eye (the colored part). Any ideas? My vet vacilliated on the issue, Im guessing he's baffled. I have some erythromycin opthalmic ointment that I gave a try this morning. Anyone have a clue? Thanks, Glen, Tucker, (and now....Tompkins). The lady I spoke with on the phone turned out to be a Vet's assistant and not the receptionist, but the receptionists seemed very knowledgeable and very eager to help Lefty also. He only weighed 5 lbs. 7 oz. which is less than before, but he was never a big cat. He is still quite anemic and she recommended keeping him for a transfusion. Fortunately, they have donor cats on site and the cost is not too bad. I think she is going to give him fluids and check a few other things. She also said that she would get him started on the Interferon today. She said I should call later and see how he is doing. He had been quietly sitting on my lap and purring until I handed him to the vet, then he began to howl and scream--it was awful. She said he had a slight heart murmur due to the anemia most likely and he was extremely stressed. She said the stress alone could kill him and she thought a transfusion was definitely the best opotion. It was so hard to leave him. He had climbed into bed with me last night--the first time in over a week, and for 2 hours I just rubbed his face and listened to him purr. I hope the transfusion helps. The vet said they had a cat in there now that had been brought in on the brink of death and they transfused it and started it on medication and it was doing great. They are trying to adopt it out (she tried really hard to give it to me, but I am already braced for the HUGE fight I am going to have with my hubby when I tell him I left the cat for a transfusion and there is NO WAY I could bring another cat into this house or he will throw us all out on our butts!) No matter how this turns out, I want to thank all of you who have helped to educate me and provided support--Lefty would have been dead last week if I had not been able to learn these things in time. By the way, I printed out several of your letters and put them into my notebook with the other info I had printed from the internet. When I had a question, I showed them a letter referring to a particular supplement or drug--it really made it so much easier to explain things to them. I also printed out the Vet Directory for those who are using the newer methods of treating felv+ cats (I wanted them to see that there was only ONE in Ohio). I gave it to the assistant and she apparently showed it to the vet before she came to see us because when I recommended that they contact James Wilson to be added to the list, she said she was planning to. She also said that she noticed one of the other vets had gone to vet medical school with her. She said "Now I know where Julie is!" I thought that was kind of neat. The assistant told me that she would love for me to fax or email them copies of anything I found interesting about this disease. She has 3 positive cats and reads everything she can to keep on the cutting edge of this thing. I am so thankful to have found them and I am hoping maybe I can work something out by doing a web-page for them or even some printing on a trade basis. (I have a graphic design business and work with several businesses on trade.) Thanks again. Wish Lefty luck--he's in good hands now. Merlin's eye did something very strange also. If you looked at it from the side, it looked like a mountain range. I sometimes called it a "lava lamp" type of appearance. Some FeLV cats get this. In Merlins case, it meant a brain tumor. It could be something simple like herpes also, which cats can and do get in their eyes. My sons cat has this. (He is FeLV negative) In most cases, there is nothing you can do about it. There are some in the group who have some meds for the herpes, but I can't remember what they are. Maybe they can help more . barb -------------------------------------- From: Newtanator Date sent: Thu, 23 Apr 1998 18:57:32 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Barb Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Carol, She prob had to develop that attitude to stay alive outside. It works very well keeping them from scratching furniture and wood work. My three bedroom dwellers Misha, Meg and Lor....Misha and Meg are out and about now. Lor I'm afraid has moved from under the bed in his room, (now Jack's room) to under the bed in my room. Lor is feral and has always been timid, so I think this may just be a way of life for him to hide. Interestingly tho, the boys no longer pick on him, my calico Chelsea does! But she can be a little witch sometimes anyway. When you get it, don't spray it on them. I put some on my hand and wiped it on them. good luck, barb -------------------------------------- Date sent: Thu, 23 Apr 1998 18:02:54 -0500 (CDT) From: "Nancy A.
