I know this is a difficult time for you and it may just happen that the prednisone stimulates his appetite. I support you in questioning a quality of life--as much as we want our dear little kitties near us, we have to decide when it is selfishness and compromises their needs . . . . I'm sending lots of good thoughts your way. Nancy -------------------------------------- Date sent: Sun, 12 Apr 1998 16:50:01 -0500 (CDT) From: "Nancy A. I really think you did the right thing, but i know it's hard. Please know we are thinking of you and sending positive thoughts your way. nancy -------------------------------------- Date sent: Sun, 12 Apr 1998 17:04:25 -0500 (CDT) From: "Nancy A. Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Nina, I think the side effects of prednisone are terrible; however, I believe it has redeeming points in 2 cases: (1) if it can be used in a crisis to save the animal/human and then slowly tapered off. jake started 5 months ago with I believe it was 5 mg. daily. Now he is on 2.5 mg. every fourth day and each time his bloodwork is normal, we taper more. (2) I know a cat with FIV--very severe anemia. She is on pred and will be for the rest of her life. She would bleed to death without it. yet she has been on it for 1.5 yrs., has had side effects--like very bad teeth infections but she has played all this time. If she were my cat (I speak entirely for myself), if it meant keeping her alive (and reasonably happy--enought to be playing) I'd keep her on it, but that's just me. In 5 months, even when Panther has contracted an URI, Jake hasn't; he has shown no side effects. I do believe in self-education. Prednisone given in the a.m. only mimics the body's production of cortisone; also if it can be given at least every other day, there is less chance of suppression of the immune system. I know there are folks on this list who would not opt for steriods--this is my opinion and I respect others. We all have to make the decision as to what works for us. I was on pred for 6 months because I had a condition where I would have bled to death. It literally saved my life . . . and drs. got me off it as soon a s they could--tapering it. Yes, I did develop many infections, but it saved my life and did not make me steriod dependent. I hope this answeres your question but if you have more--please feel free to ask. I can only given you what I've read and understood and how I've decided, but if that helps you in anyway--for or against--I am happy to give you any info or opinions you want. Our babies that were on the edge are doing better and one husband is doing better...It has been a long, cold, winter with much sadness, but there has been joy to. We must rejoice the ones that are still with us and fondly remember those that aren't and look forward to those to come. Here's hoping you and yours had a wonderful day. barb and all my fuzzballs -------------------------------------- Date sent: Sun, 12 Apr 1998 19:22:57 +0100 To: felvtalk@MailingList.net From: BILL BEAMISH Subject: Re: Arnie on Sunday Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Jean, I'm SO happy about Arnie! I hope you do take comfort in knowing she is at the Rainbow Bridge, pain free, and you will see her again. I know how much it hurts, though, and I'm thinking of you this evening and wishing you the best. Judy -------------------------------------- From: "Cheri Gardiner" To: Subject: Re: Chaz's tumble. Date sent: Sun, 12 Apr 1998 19:20:16 -0600 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Barb, My furangel is only 10 pounds. But that ten pounds can get into more trouble. So far there hasn't been any lingering effect from the fall. The sneezing is almost gone. Hope all of yours are doing well. I started both kittens on Vitamin C crushed into their wet food. I have also started feeding them more meat, some raw beef, baked turkey and chicken. They are eating very little wet food now just enough to get their cranberry powder and vitamin C into. I can see some improvement in them already. Maybe that's just wishful thinking. It's a tough surgery. I know how you feel about Russian. I still miss my little Merlin. Join us when you can, we miss you, but hubby has to come first. As long as your vet is learning, that's what's important.
