It's definitely worth noting here, and the Nutri-Cal warning about the preservative Sodium Benzoate might be important too as additions to the Supplements pages that we are putting together. If there is a potential threat out there, we ought to REACH for it, and broadcast the news. .marilyn. -------------------------------------- From: "Claude Horstmann" To: Subject: Re: New Yorker Date sent: Sat, 11 Apr 1998 11:17:01 -0400 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Aw-Right.... so maybe we ARE a little testy... We get jake's IV and it's $12 a shot--expensive, but it's done so much for him. I get jake and Panther's CBC read about every 2-3 months to keep on top of things. Sometimes Jake's is taken more often because we keep on lowering his pred dose and I want to get him off it entirely if possible so I need to know how he's doing. The only side effects that I know of from Immunoregulin are shakiness and lethargy. I have never noticed either with Jake. Good luck to you and Keigan! Having Arnie home with you this week-end, with its own spiritual overtones may be the best thing for you both. You will have a chance to gauge for yourself the limits of his condition, or you may see some improvement that helps you take the next day.. and the next. You'll know, the heart knows. ....... Sounds like you're on the roller coaster with Tucker, but glad to hear you've indeed been able to lengthen your time together with a good quality of life. The pred, look out big time, that is a powerful immunodepressant that will give you cheap thrills for a short time via the steroid boost, and then your cat will be dead. Yet for Chloe, one treatment gave her a life-giving boost last year and short term use can be highly beneficial. But if you give it regularly, kitty will die because between FeLV and the steroids there will be no immune response. As for epogen, some people on the list have used it, but both vets I asked said it would be unlikely to help Chloe or any other cat with this condition, it's for renal failure(kidneys). Whether kitty should be transfused depends on a number of things that someone who can really read bloodwork is best prepatred to deal with. I believe that it varies with the cat and what count was "normal" for them. Chloe was able to maintain appearances with a blood count below 10 (5 the day she died), and had plenty of energy maintaining a count of only about 15, about half normal. She was still producing her own rbc's, and looked pretty healthy though tired, so we made the decision to try and transfuse her even though she had an extremely low blood count and putting her down was a definite possibility. It was too late unfortunately. Typically once the transusion cycle starts with an FeLV cat, you don't have much time. The cat begins to rely on the cheap fix, and the transusfions space closer and closer together. Six months. Three months. Six weeks. And they are not cheap. Chloe's first was 10 months ago. I'll be thinking of you and hope things of course work out, -- Steve -------------------------------------- From: "Steve Lackow" To: Subject: Re: Chloe Date sent: Sat, 11 Apr 1998 14:11:28 -0700 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Linda, maybe you WERE a cat. For alpha lipoic acid go to http;//aegis.com/ and in the left-hand screen click search, then type in alpha lipoic acid. There are several articles, click on #6 ".....an inhibitor of viral replication" For colostrum go to http://www.wimall.com/friend/index3.html#Colostrum For Beta-1, #-D Glucan go to immudyne.com/nut.html For Immunocal go to http://www.newapproachestocancer.com/immunocal/benefits.html ( the CDC, from the AIDS daily summary states that immunocal can inhibit viral replication) For thymic protein A go to http://www.worldhealth.net/protein.html For information about mucopolysaccharides go to http://www.simplynaturalproducts.com/AloeVera/2articles.html The mucopolysaccharides are available from Mannatech as the product "Ambrotose", in the Aloe Vera Caps from Simply Natural (don't use their liquid for cats, the preservative is toxic to cats, but not humans) Although I don't have an MPS count for the Ambrotose, I suspect that it must be higher per dose than the Simply Natural product. There are many more sites in which you can find information about these derivatives. Try using the search engine like Infoseek.com and initiate a seach for each of the above items. Good luck, and I hope Tucker is doing better soon.
