Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Glen, I can't give you any info on Epogen or transfusions, but I do want to share my own experience for what it's worth. I have two FELV+ cats--Jake and Panther. When FELV was discovered in Jake he was put on interferon and immunoregulin plus prednisone. That was 5 months ago. He will be on interferon for the remainder of his life (which I hope is very very long). He is down to a maintenance dose of immunoregulin (once a month), and has gone from 5 mg. a day of prednisone to 2.5 mg. every fourth day (we are continually weaning him off as long as his blood work is good). When he was diagnosed, he was near transfusion level, but the pred kicked in and his blood work improved. The way I understand it is once the interferon and immunoregulin kicked in, they took over and continue (fortunately) to enhance his health so we can continue weaning him off the steroids. You may want to consider this route. I know many on this list are against steroids, but I personally am for them in last-ditch efforts and when they can be used temporarily and the animal can get weaned off them. Good luck whatever you decide. One more thing, it's been my experience that the anemia will only continue to worsen so you might want to do something. nancy -------------------------------------- Date sent: Fri, 10 Apr 1998 13:52:01 -0500 (CDT) From: "Nancy A. I re-read your post and realized Tucker was already on prednisone. Sorry. It may have to be increased or you might want to try immunoregulin. Immunoregulin really seemed to improve Jake's condition--quite rapidly. In fact I have read it only takes 1-3 days if it's going to work at all. Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Nancy from my experience there is not much one can do to limit or improve the anemia.....the bone marrow is affected and only a bone marrow transplant would help.....and I right in assuming this? What usually happens then is that, excepting any infections that may arise, the anemia will be the biggest problem in the end..... Let's see....Yes, ImmunoRegulin can be given SQ, but is more effective, I think at least at first, given IV. Three times the first week, day 1,4,7...Then twice a week for a month, once a week for a month, then every other week. I do give my positive cats a shot, SQ, about once a month. Occasional Bloodwork is always good. It gives you a baseline to work from. And since cats are very good at hiding the fact they don't feel well, it's good to check once and a while. The only side effect from the ImmunoRegulin I have seen is they are a little tired the day of the shot. After that, there has been nothing. I have not had a cat on Acemannan, so I can't help you with that one. My guess is the ImmunoRegulin is cheaper, but they do different things. I suggest you read the information on our www site at: www.angelfire.com/il/felv and read about both of them, and decide which one you want to go with. Don't forget the good nutrition and vitamins. Every little bit helps. FIP is so awful. Worse than felv. I'm afraid I have to go with your vet on this one to. Much to dangerous for your other babies. But Lord knows, there will be another. I have to admitt, when I took Jack in to the vet and said to test him, as I was leaving, the office girl ran after me and said, "What do you want us to do if he's positive?" I said, no big deal, already got felv in the house. She said no, positive for FIV? I was dumbstruck. I hadn't thought of that. Something my cats don't have. She must have seen the look on my face and just said, we'll test him and if need be, we'll call. You don't have to decide now. Thank goodness they didn't call. I still don't know what I would have done. I hate to say it, but I don't think I would have brought him home. There is NO vaccine for FIV and I have so many. I don't think I could have done it. I couldn't in good conscience have just let him go either. Well, as I said, their will surely be another for you. But you still deserve a cyber hug for trying. barb -------------------------------------- From: Newtanator Date sent: Fri, 10 Apr 1998 21:02:01 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Rissa-Tai's progress report Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Pam, How are you and Rissa-Tai doing? I don't really know. But when I gave my cats liver, I always bought the calves liver. Let's face it, it isn't safe to breathe anymore. The food, water, air...One day eggs are bad the next day they aren't. I don't even pay any attention anymore. If I want to have popcorn at a movie, I'm going to do it. (If I'm stupid enough to pay that price for it) If I drop dead before the end of the movie, so be it. barb -------------------------------------- To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Date sent: Fri, 10 Apr 1998 19:44:11 -0400 Subject: Re: I'm new to the list too From: naohalloran@juno.com (Naomi J O'Halloran) Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Rachel, I'm sorry to hear you're having so much trouble with poor Fitz. You asked about a vet in Central Jersey, well I live in Somerset, NJ and go to a vet right on Rt. 27. You may know the road. He hasn't really done all that much work with FELV+ kitties, but he seems to know a bit more than your vet about the medicines and he's willing to try new things. Anyway, he's helping me with my Keigan. We started him on interferon, some supplements and are starting Acemannan tomorrow, which you may want to look into for lymphosarcoma. It is used as an immunostimulant, and is also used for tumors. The vet is very willing to try to help us. If you're in this area, let me know. Date sent: Fri, 10 Apr 1998 17:56:06 -0600 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hello everyone. Bad news. The little kitten I was to adopt had FIP too. The "cold" was a severe upper repsiratory infection that got worse overnight. My vet, one of two there, said she didn't want to expose my two little ones to him. She also said he wasn't going to make it through the URI. It had gone to far by the time they caught it. It is crazy but I cried when she told me they were going to put him to sleep. He was just too sick to recoup. At least he's playing at the Rainbow Bridge with the rest of our friends. He'll be out of pain. My vet said he was in a lot of pain. I trust her. She wouldn't have done it if he had any chance. First, does anyone know if immunoregulin can only be given IV, or is there some other way, like SQ? Also, how often does it have to be given if it's just for maintenance for a healthy felv+ cat, and how much. Also, how much does it cost per month or so? Second, would it be beneficial to have bloodwork like CBC's and general chemistry profiles run on Keigan periodically just to make sure that everything is normal and to be able to catch something early, or do they only show abnormalities when they are very far along? Next, does anyone know of the side effects of Acemannan or Immunoregulin? Keigan got his first shot of Acemannan today, and I forgot to ask about side effects. I'm looking into the Immunoregulin because the Acemannan comes in this little bottle the only has about 2 shots in it and he gets one every week, so the $35 bottle only lasts two weeks, and I'm wondering if the immunoregulin is cheaper, but we can only do it if it can be given some other way than by IV. I guess that's it for now. If anyone has any ideas or info, please let me know. Thanks!! It wasn't easy, but I couldn't harm Kitty or Chaz. I hope someday I can help another little one or two. Everyone here says they haven't seen much of FeLV+. My vet says it is because people aren't testing. She said she has a hard time getting people to agree to test. Have you heard anything about liver being bad for the cats? What's the problem with it? The liver excerpt came from a book I was reading while at Barnes & Nobles a few days ago. I was jotting tidbits of info from Cat Books, and came across : Be careful with liver. It is poisonous in high doses. Too much liver can damage a cat's bones, and cause mouth problems. I know that it wasn't the Frazier book, 'cause I bought that one and have been reading it , if I find another reference to liver, I'll post it ASAP. .marilyn. -------------------------------------- From: "Cheri Gardiner" To: Subject: Re: Questions Date sent: Fri, 10 Apr 1998 20:29:01 -0600 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Thank you, Marilyn. If anything, he seemed to feel better. The Acemannan injections cost about $25 a week. The immunoregulin injections cost me six dollars a shot, but since it has to be done more frequently, it costs about the same in the beginning. (The vet stopped the immunoregulin--always by IV-- when we discovered the tumors.) Also, Ambrotose has the same type of medicine in it as Acemannan (that's what the holistic vet told me), and it comes in the pill form, but I'm not sure if it's as effective. Good luck, Naomi. You're taking good care of your little boy.
