Jack sounds like he will be a nice fur friend. Gretchen started on the Interferon today, seems not to bother her in any way. I don't know how much she actually got under the tongue, this being the first attempt. Later on, I'll probably become quite a professional at aiming for the right spot. (long) Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Dear James & Dr. Myers: Hello Folks, There is an ominous development with Pooters II's condition, besides the FeLV+. As you may recall, Pooters had the first seizure I had ever seen on Feb. 12, 1998, which I posted as my entrance to the list. Then, on March 29, she had another bad one (seemed at least a minute long, but may have been less, I don't know). They both were awful to see. On March 26, I was finally able to get Pooters to Dr. Tracy McFarland, The Cat Doctor, here in Santa Clarita, CA. The Doc had a full CBC done. For various reasons I shall not impose upon you here, besides Pooters FeLV+ status, my mind has been... well, dealing with about all it can handle for some time now, and as a result, I actually forgot to mention that first seizure to the Doc during Pooters' visit. I still cannot believe I forgot this most important detail. So, on March 29, after Pooters' 2ns big seizure, I faxed the info to the Doc. What it boils down to is this. There are apparently 3 possible reasons for the seizures: 1. Brain lesion or lymphoma 2. Epilepsy 3. Toxiplasmosis... a bug in layman's terms. A toxititer test will apparently reveal this. Now. The CBC was already back by Pooters 2nd seizure on March 29. So, the Doc called the lab to see if they still had some viable blood of Pooters left to run a toxititer test. They did. But, the blood had to be sent to another lab for this test. As of this writing, those results are still not back. Valuable time has been lost because of my failure to mention the 1st seizure. Had the Doc known this, she could have included the toxiter test then, and critical time would not have been lost, perhaps as much as a 7 to 10 days. What a dolt I am. The Doc will be in this morning (April 8, 1998), and perhaps the test results will be back. My fingers are crossed. They are crossed because at 6am on the morning of April 5, 1998, and again tonight at 8:45pm, April 7, Pooters had her 3rd & 4th seizures. These I call them "mini" ones because I intervened by picking her up these times, and kneeling on the rug, and holding and comforting her quietly. It seemed to help because they seemed to last a much shorter time, perhaps 10 to 20 seconds each. My concern is I now notice some dilation in her left eye, that may have been there for a long time, but is so slight I thought nothing of it or didn't even notice it until reading recent posts about this very kind of thing possibly being related to tumors behind the dilated eye. So naturally I began to look closely at her eyes, and there definitely is a left-eye dilation, however slight. I would say, with the lights on, and her eyes "stopped down" to narrow slits, the left eye is maybe 50 to 60 % more dilated than the right eye. So I have two questions I hope you will answer: First, what traditional, as well as holistic, or natural, methods, are either of you aware of, to treat the seizures if they are a result of either or all of the three possibilities listed above (Brain lesion or lymphoma; or epilepsy; or the toxiplasmosis parasite)? Second, and lastly, I will have to take Pooters the 15 miles, one way, to the Doc's again, probably this morning. I have gotten this Bach's "Rescue Remedy" to keep her comfortable and calm during the entire experience. Total road time and Doc time could push up to 2 hours or more. The directions on the package, for humans is 4 drops in a quarter glass water and sip; or, 4 drops directly on the tongue. I weigh about 175 to 180lbs. Pooters II weighs 7lbs & 13.5ozs. At least she did at the Doc's on March 26. I have done the math, and it would appear that Pooters should have about 1/23rd of the human dose. But how on earth would I measure such a small quantity? So, how much "Rescue Remedy" may I safely give the little creature directly on her tongue? Thank you so much for enduring this long letter, and, of course, any help you can extend to Pooters on these two questions. I will also post this to the list to get all the answers I can. I hope this okay with you both. All you need is Love..... She's been eating like a pig!!! Every 20 minutes or so. We figure, that must be a good sign. She's had a bowel movement every day now for the last three, and although she is still skinny and doesn't look like she has started to gain anything back yet, we have more hope. This latest change has occurred since we took the Interferon down to only once every three days. It seems to have really helped her. I guess we got over-enthusiastic about it since it was the one med she would gladly take, as she loves the "salty water" (she always liked to drink the saline from my contac lenses in the sink). So, definate proof that too much of it is not a good thing - it obviously was making her more depressed. She is now out more (a little more active), barely ever hides under the chair, and purrs more again. The Hemobart is still there, we added the Baytrill tonight. Has anyone had any luck with this in combination with the Doxycycline as effective medications for Hemobartinella? The Oncologist suggested the two together. We think she looks pinker, but we're not sure. Hopefully, she'll improve some now that she's not so depressed. She won't be going to the vet again until Friday. Will update again then. Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi all, I just wanted to add a little to Jim's post. The Neupogen worked very well for us as far as really upping the wbc. Rissa-Tai went from a count of about 200 to 12,600 in a week with every other day injections. However, we didn't have as much luck with the Epogen. We tried the Epogen with four injections, every other day, and there was no change. When I spoke with the Oncologist, after we made the decision to stop the Epogen, she informed me that Epogen usually is not effective with this disease. However, it is not that expensive, so it is up to you whether you want to try it or not. I just wanted to update about that since I spoke with the Oncologist since my last post concerning the Epogen. (long) Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Greg, Please don't berate yourself for forgetting to mention the seizures. Yes, they are important, but at the time, your concern was with the FeLV. I don't know what to tell you about the Bach Rescue Remedy, Linda P. from Sacramento is the best for that, or what to do about the seizures, but forgive yourself. We all know you are doing the best you can for her. I want you to know that I have those thumb-tacked to my bulletin board along with your message to Ann about never looking back. There is so much guilt associated with the passing of a loved furry one who like a child depends on us for protection. I don't think I am the only one who is tormented by " what if I had used a different treatment," or "if I had only been a better mom," or "maybe I didn't love him enough," etc. etc. I am not trying to be morbid or inflict greater pain. I am trying to work through these emotions and put things in perspective. This group and you are helping me do just that.
