He was a gallant fighter, but no longer needs to fight. He is at peace now, and best of all, he is enjoying himself, playing with all of our kitties at Rainbow Bridge------where there is no pain, no pills, no syringes, just lots of sunshine and happy friends. You were a wonderful mom to Ernie, and oh, what a lucky feline he was to have found you. He is still watching you so, let him know that you miss him, but also that you're happy he has found peace. And, may you also find peace. Thinking of you and praying for you during this time. "Buffy Coat: Light stratum of a blood clot seen when the blood is centrafuged or allowed to stand in a test tube. The red blood cells settle to the bottom and between the plasma and RBC's there is a light colored layer that contains mostly White Blood Cells." Sometimes these cells are removed and given to the immune system depressed, (AIDS, Leukemia etc) I would think, if your vet was looking for them, it was to see if the body is producing them. Hope this helps. Might be another idea for us. Take a healthy cat, take blood, spin it down and reinfuse those wonder little wbc's. barb -------------------------------------- From: "Lynn Stickels" To: "felvtalk" Subject: Steve and Chloe Date sent: Mon, 6 Apr 1998 10:04:51 -0700 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Have you tried the pettinic? I haven't dealt with the anemia lately(before all the new treatments) but I have been reading where other's have used it. We're thinking of using the chicken wire screen idea that Judy gave me and probably make some type of frame and place it after the flimsy screens, just a few kinks need to be ironed out first. You were lucky to get your kitties back inside so soon except for the ex-feral taking a couple of days. We live about 20 feet from a highway that has 18 wheelers flying by at all times and I can't imagine what would happen if a cat got out for even a couple of minutes. His bad eye looks just gastly. There is no eye, just a red draining hole. After his first panic attack when realizing he was trapped, he has calmed down. Probably just in shock. But he is quiet, there was no hissing or growling. I hate leaving him in there all night but that what the vets office wanted. Besides, if I let him out I'm not sure how I would get him into a carrier. Best to leave him there I guess, for both our sakes. Wish us luck. Barb ps, here's hoping he is healthy, other than the eye. -------------------------------------- Date sent: Mon, 06 Apr 1998 20:39:40 +0100 To: felvtalk@MailingList.net From: BILL BEAMISH Subject: Re: one eyed Jack Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi Barb, I'm so glad you got the one-eyed tom! Poor baby. Best of luck tomorrow. It is best to leave him there tonight. I've done this before and he'd just panic if you let him out and he'd hide and it may take MONTHS to find him! Just kidding - but they can find the very tiniest, smallest places to hide, can't they?? Once I searched the house completely for a feral cat I took in and FINALLY I found him just flattened against the back of one of my kitchen cabinets. He was so big I would have never believed he'd fit in that cabinet! Now wish me luck for on Friday I will be trying to trap - again - my Maggie's feral Mom. She has been hanging around on and off at my friend's house where she brought Maggie almost 2 years ago. She must be positive for Felv because Maggie tested positive when she was just 3 months old. I'm amazed she's still alive unless by some miracle she threw off the Felv. It drives me crazy that I have never been able to trap her. If she is positive, she's passing the virus to every poor stray she comes in contact with. THAT'S what drives me nuts. I have gotten strays from there, however, that have tested negative so maybe she did throw off the virus. I hope! Take care and again, good luck tomorrow! I have a Tuxedo cat, an ex-feral that I rescued. When I found him he had one eye that was literally falling out of his head. His mom and littermates were shunning him. He seems to understand that he got rescued, and is my most affectionate cat. I get lots of head-butts every day from Joss. Hope Jack turns out to be a great kitty, too! I then kept them in the bathroom until I had tamed them. This site has some info on the topic which you might find useful: http://www.feralcat.com/ Susan -------------------------------------- Date sent: Mon, 06 Apr 1998 22:25:05 -0400 From: Lane Killam Organization: InfiNet To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: one eyed Jack Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net You will do just fine....I work with feral cats (manage a large colony where I work). Even the ones that half way trust me, go into panic when they are trapped. The advice usually prescribed by Alley Cat Allies is to cover the trap with a towel or sheet and leave the cat in a place where they will not be disturbed until you take them to the vet. About a year ago I trapped one that turned out to have only one eye and a hernia (both repairable). We ended up calling him "Mean Gene" .... he's feral and cute as a button. Good luck. L. Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net All, I went in to check on Jack and he seemed so calm I decided to try and pet him and he didn't mind at all. Maybe he is not feral, just had so many people be mean to him, he was afraid of everybody. To be safe, I have left him in the trap. It's pretty big and I put an old towel for him to lay on. I was able to give his neck a feel, no lumps, just those Puffy cheeks tom's get. Fur feels like straw, looks like he has ear mites. Didn't try to get alook at his teeth, but no hissing or growling. He actually purred! Well it's supposed to get down to the 30's tonight, but he won't be cold this night!! barb -------------------------------------- From: "Steve Lackow" To: "FeLV Talk" Subject: Chloe Date: Mon, 6 Apr 1998 20:34:52 -0700 Reply-to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Now I know what Barb felt. I hate to bring this news. Chloe never let me know how sick she was. She ate last night, walked into the vet's today and turned out to have a blood count below 5. After the blood test came back, I left her to be transfused and said "Bye Chloe, see you later!" and she looked back at me with big big eyes as the vet took her from me. And then God took her from me. After transfusion, she stopped breathing and could not be revived in the intensive care unit this afternoon. I've tried to say more but I find that I can't. I never had a cat so sweet, smart and vocal nor one who needed me so much. I loved her so. - Steve -------------------------------------- Date sent: Mon, 06 Apr 1998 22:52:08 +0000 From: LawBet Organization: Home for Wayward Felines To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Chloe Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Steve, I know there is no reason, but why do I feel so guilty after reading one of these messages. I've never yet lost a kitty to this vicious disease and do not currently have a FeLV+ kitty. I can only offer consoling words. There is a book entitled "Good-by My Friend", written by Mary & Herb Montgomery. Here is a quote from that book, maybe it will help: "No one knows what heaven is like but you must believe that what God has in store for you includes EVERYTHING you love."
