Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Lynn, How awful for you! I agree completely! It's not the animals I blame so much but stupid, uncaring owners. I had my first cat ever--a beloved cat of 14 have 2 pit bulls sicced (sp?) on her by a convict--one of those rare, awful moments. We were just walking down our country lane when we ran into this creep who was running away from the scene of a crime. Know what I mean when I say "you just never know . . ." Needless to say, our beloved KIKI died. Nancy -------------------------------------- Date sent: Sun, 5 Apr 1998 10:23:12 -0500 (CDT) From: "Nancy A. At least she spent the final part of her life with someone who cared! Go easy on yourself--I believe the animals know who cares about them. Our thoughts are with you, and we know the pain and sense of loss that you are feeling right now. I hope you'll stay with us, though, and help us win the battle over this devastating disease- I'm sure Larry would love to see you on his deck at the victory party. The Steroids FAQ is now up and ready to be read. Barb, among her many other talents, has written this information sheet, and it describes the many aspects, dangers, and uses both in general and specific to FeLV of these steroids. I encourage everyone to read it and get a handle on one of the integral treatments we have for symptoms related to FeLV. You can find this FAQ at: http://www.geocities.com/HotSprings/Spa/8025/ >From there, access the FeLV Information Sheet where you can access the FAQ. The reason I don't give the direct URL is that I want everyone to see and absorb the information available from the many projects associated with what we're all about. Please send all questions and comments to either me or Barb personally and we'll attend to them asap. Take care, and best wishes to all. I could not leave him at the vets for a pm. He didn't suffer very much, just right at the end when the vet was trying to give him the injection. He died with me and Roger there. His lungs filled up with fluid and he couldn't breathe. We buried him in our backyard, in a nice peaceful spot where Ern and I used to sit together on a blanket. He was a blessing in our lives and a scrapper to the end. We will miss him very much. You have all helped me so much through this time. I do think his treatment helped, it was just too far along. Everyone keep fighting this terrible disease. Ernie was worth every bit of effort we put in on his behalf. You did so very much for him and he knew it. He was blessed to have you as his mom, and he will be waiting for you at the bridge as so many of our babies are. I hope his trip was a peaceful one and how he is happy and playing with all our friends. You take care and help us continue to fight! You better believe I'll keep fighting this awful, heartbreaking disease. It has caused SO MUCH pain for feline and human alike. I hate it! I know you will miss him like crazy. I'm glad you buried him in your backyard. I always feel they are closer to me and happier (as silly as that may sound) when I do that. Please take care of yourself. We must never give up the fight. I will continue fighting this disease. I know Ernie is at peace now and that is some comfort. I know he is waiting for me at the bridge, where catnip grows wild and he can play with all the other kitties there. Someone (Paula?) asked about the expense of the Acemannan. It was $25 a week and treatment was supposed to last at least six weeks, up to twelve. It's just too bad that you must be the one that is mourning her instead of the 'family' she was mourning for. That is so sad. What an idea about using chicken wire in a frame, I'll have to talk to my hubby on this and see what he can come up with. Thanks for letting me know about this. An account has been established to which donations can be made toward the purchase of a new computer system for the owner/moderator of this felvtalk group. Many kind folks have already offered to contribute "within their means" to this fund and have received messages from me outlining how to do so. This message is intended for members of the list who may not have seen my previous post on this subject. The moderator of this talklist has worked many long hours and expended a considerable amount of effort for the benefit of all members of the list who are owned by FeLV+ kitties. He is in danger of losing his computer system and now we must come to his aid. Those who wish to contribute to this fund, and have not already informed me of their desire, may contact me by private e-mail to obtain details of how they may make their contribution. Wilson" To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Date sent: Sun, 5 Apr 1998 20:53:39 +0000 Subject: Antibiotics and FeLV Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi everyone, Did anyone see tonight's Dateline special on antibiotics? If not, you can read the story at: http://msnbc.com/news/139309.asp?NewGuid=0a0f9a38cc5111d19a8f08002bb6a6bb Although this story was about human use (and more, about abuse) of these antibiotics, I think it has a clear place here. Most cats are given antibiotics in an attempt to stop secondary infections associated with FeLV. I think that some folks maybe under the impression that these antibiotics are meant to specifically treat the FeLV. That is most specifically why I am sending out this note. We all know that FeLV, the common cold, the flu, and the like are all caused by viruses. Antibiotics have NO effect on viruses whatsoever. Then, why are these antibiotics prescribed for my FeLV+ cat? If your cat is ill, it is likely that a bacterialogical agent has taken advantage of your cat's compromised immune system, so antibiotics are given to combat these bacteria and parasites such as hemobartinella. They do NOTHING to impede the virus. Another reason that I am writing this is because of the overuse and misuse of the prescriptions for antibiotics. It is because of this that many bacteria have mutated to a point where antibiotics are no longer effective- even in strong or combined doses. I worry about this because of the sheer rate at which veterinarians liberally prescribe these antibiotics. Also, an aspect of the misuse of antibiotics is the discontinuation of them before the prescription runs out simply because the cat seems to feel better. This is not good because the heartiest of the bacteria and parasites will be left alive to mutate and become resistant to the antibiotic used. Besides the discontinuation being due to the animal feeling better, people end up quitting simply because it is "just too hard to pill a cat". If this is your problem, ask your vet for a liquid antibiotic and a syringe. Unfortunately, many in the medical community feel that the battle is already lost for certain types of bacteria such as certain strains of TB. Does anyone have any way of finding out about veterinary resources that may cite similar cases for feline ailments? Please pass them along if you can. Well, I just wanted to get this info out so that folks could add it to their arsenal of important information. Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, etc. Take care, and best wishes.
