The info regarding the abnormal foodstuffs and anemia was obtained at the VetPedia website. I did her medicine and squeezeed that white stuff in her hole, ( its just a small hole in her jaw I guess the doctor lanced it so it would drain). Anyway, I got this large hypersyringe guess its made for horses, so I put a jar of ham baby food in it and squeezed about half the jar didnt want to over do her. She had her fit taking her paw pushing against her cheek and squalling, I thought this isnt working maybe if I get warm water in that mouth like people maybe it might sooth the gums and throat since that liquid antibodics is so strong she gags on it. I was in the kitchen and felt something rubbing my leg I knew it was her shes the only one that always bugs me while I'm cooking and this time I was very pleased to be bothered. I looked in ref and pulled out YES raw hamburger but she went nuts over it and I let her enjoy a few bites and then cooked some too but she like the raw better. OH well. Now I will see what happens next. I will surely let you know . Maybe its a sign of better letters to you all...Thanks for being there. DHEA does grow hair where women don't want hair, at least it does on my friend who has lupus. But it seems to help, and there have been clinical studies that show it does. I've seized upon DHEA as a high potential therapy that might work on FeLV if it works on lupus. Fortunately there isn't anywhere that Chloe does not want hair. I started giving her the wild yam again as a DHEA precursor, so her immuno cocktail now consists of whole leaf aloe vera juice, sodium ascorbate vitamin C, DMG, wild yam. She is perkier and happier tonight but still won't eat, and it's her favorite cheap, smelly, vile crap! -- Steve -------------------------------------- From: "Steve Lackow" To: Subject: Re: Ernie, Lyle, Steroids Date sent: Thu, 2 Apr 1998 22:00:09 -0800 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net It was indeed Lyle Alzado, one of my homeboys and a misunderstood guy. I don't know why these cats take steroids just so they can stay in the game ;-). But steroids, and LSD for that matter, can be potent tools when used that way. I certainly think Chloe got hers at a critical and acute time, just once, and that it helped save her. The steroids helped too . Remember, Chloe is not just an FeLV cat, but what Ed Grimley used to call "mental" long before FeLV surfaced. Most of us on the list know at this point that steroids can be a cheap fix and wind up lowering the cat's immunity so much further that they die. I am also against cats using LSD because I see too much potential for abuse :-0. -- Steve -------------------------------------- From: Boonedagel Date sent: Fri, 3 Apr 1998 08:45:23 EST To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: my sweet booger Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Janie, It breaks my heart to hear this story. It is gut wrenching to see what your little Booger has to face every single day. I know it tears your heart out as well. I do not understand, and never will, why such a sweet life form as Booger, or any life form, has to endure such... terror... horror... as this. Bless her heart... for struggling on... and yours for sticking with her, and enduring her pain and fear with such courage. You are, Janie... a Fellow Traveler. And she is... a lucky kitty to have you there to comfort her through the nightmare. I only hope that you find comfort somehow too. May this madness of disease cease somehow, someday... for us all. I was uncomforable with it but, as you said with Booger, he really loved it! I didn't give him a lot but every day he got a small gob of it - he seemed to need it to get his appetite going for the day. Buddy was a stray and was in terrible shape when I got him. He was just skin and bones, tested positive for Fiv and wouldn't eat for anything. I got him to eat by giving him the hamburger and when he died, of a tumor 3 years later, he weighed almost 10 lbs. Good luck with Booger. I'm not sure how to write this so I guess I will just tell you: About two weeks before Buddy was put to sleep, one of his eyes dilated and remained that way for about 36 hours. I called my vet (at home; she's wonderful) and she was concerned. Of course, by the time we went to the vet, it had gone back to normal. About 3 days after that, his pupil in the same eye became misshapen. His whole eye looked funny. The iris color was changing from green to an orangish color. I was able to get him to the vet school to see an opthamologist where he was diagnosed with glaucoma. The pressure in his eye was 39---very high. The opthamologist also looked behind his eyes and saw masses, etc. They were pretty sure he had lymphoma. Within a couple of days, the other eye was affected as well. When I took him back in several days later, his pressure had gone up to 56 and the vet told me I was looking at a dying kitty who was in quite a bit of pain. They talked about removing his bad eye. But given his struggles, his weakness at the time, the lymphoma, and the probability that his other eye would be the same way soon, we decided to let him go home ( where he got a wonderful meal of fish, sour cream and milk), where we said our good-byes. I didn't want him dying on an operating table. I could not have left him there for all the money in the world. I know I did the right thing. Susan, I tell you this so that you could get Ernie in to see an opthamologist and get an answer. The worst part of this dreaded disease is the uncertainty of just what it does to our babies. I never thought it would be glaucoma that got my Buddy, but he was just not strong enough to fight it. Please, see if there is an opthamologist who can help you. Hopefully, it will give you some peace of mind. I'm sorry to have to tell you my story, but I know this is how we learn. My thoughts and prayers are with you and Ernie. I don't know if you have time to go through the archives, but maybe one of those cats is still available. If not, is there a way to put an "advertisement" on your website, James? Or maybe check with a pet rescue organization in your area........ There are 7 different groups here in Sacramento that do pet rescues, and I know some of them have "no-kill" policies. I think it's great that you are looking for a companion cat, especially since they are tribal animals. -------------------------------------- From: katseven@pcsia.com Date sent: Fri, 3 Apr 1998 08:38:32 -0600 Subject: Re: my sweet booger To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Yes, Janie, my Ernie is the same way. Those leg rubs are a positive sign. If booger feels like eating, that's a good sign, too. It is hard to see her suffer, but she's still fighting and that's what I look for at least. How horrible for him and you. There isn't an veterinary opthamolgist that I know of near here, but I will ask my vet. We are a ways from the nearest "big" city and from the vet school in Ames, IA. His pupils were never markedly unequal, and they are back to normal now. I will keep watching him for signs. (I'm making a hard copy of your post.) You are such a caring person. Perhaps, if my old memory hasn't failed me, she will impart to you her experiences in this regard. To All: I know that when my MUCH YOUNGER sister reads this, she will go ballistic and make every attempt to blister my tutu. So I respectfully request all of you to come to my immediate defense to prevent any physical or verbal abuse against my aged person. But silence in this matter, seems to me, to nullify one of the very important purposes of this group and that is mutual support in times of loss. Since I have taken derrier chewings from Generals during my military years and survived, I am banking that I will survive hers as well. Circle the wagons, here goes: Last Monday, Barb lost another of her FeLV kitties, Duncan. Last Sunday, he developed serious breathing problems. When she ran him to the vet on Monday morning, it was discovered that he had a major tumor which was causing his lungs to fill with fluid so that their capacity was reduced to only 25%. After consultation with the Michigan State Veterinary School/Clinic, it was determined that there was absolutely nothing that could be done and Duncan joined Socrates, Newt, Kallie, and Merlin at the bridge. She informed me of her most recent loss by private e-mail stating she did not wish to burden the group with more misery. Normally, my MUCH YOUNGER sister and I disagree only on political issues. But in this case, four days of silence is all I could manage. I am fully aware that I am somewhat biased with regard to my sister, but I also feel she has put her heart and soul into the efforts of this group to support others who have sustained losses as well as to make all-out war against this vicious disease. Accordingly, I do not feel she should suffer alone either. If any of you feel I have done the wrong thing, well let the arrows fly and I will do my best to fend them off. I will be safe from her direct ire both tonight and Saturday night since I have playoff hockey games both nights and will not be talking directly with her via Instant Messenger. He who fights and runs away, lives to fight another day! My heart goes out to all the sick babies and you wonderful "moms & dads" taking care of them. I still have Timmy in his room during the day (even though mom lets him out to roam the house when I'm at work) and she puts Boots in a huge open air dog kennel to get air on the nice days. He likes it in the house though. I think she just wants Timmy to be able to have some attention too. He sleeps with me at night. I am only giving him the store bought Hartz vitamins for cats daily since he is doing wonderfully being a felv carrier. Thank goodness no kind of sx whatsoever. I still live with the nightmare.....the memories with my boy Benny. Like Greg Sherrow said......we need to find an end to this madness of the disease. Boots is doing really well, I know they miss Benny, too. Please take care of all your babies and I am thinking of you ALL. Michele, Timmy & Boots & mom's kitty "Yeller" :) Michele R.
