Is your cat anemic maybe? Check the gums and see if they are nice and pink. If it has a pink nose, that should be pink also.. If the nose or gums are nearly white, you should have it checked. Has he lost weight? Have you had his ears checked for infection. there is a disease called vestibular disease that makes it difficult for them to walk. I would start vitamins, ImmunoRegulin and Interferon. The FIV is not as dangerous as the FeLV. But having both really does double your problems. Welcome to the group. All of us know what you are going thru, we have all been there or are there now. I have positives myself. barb -------------------------------------- From: "Cheri Gardiner" To: Subject: Re: Ernie, odd dilation Date sent: Wed, 1 Apr 1998 19:14:13 -0600 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Is there anyone who can explain what all the factors on the blood test are? I have the sheet and a graph that shows what's normal. Now I need to understand exactly what the symbols mean. I put about a half inch of the gel from the tube on my finger, then rub that off onto our kitty's nose. The kitty will lap it off of their nose whether they like it or not. It's an instictive reaction. Takes quite a few nose rubbings daily for the required amount, but it works for me. I would like to find a cat that we KNOW has had felv, and beaten it. I would like to take blood from that cat and give it to a positive one. Obviously, the cat that beat it has something the others didn't. This HAS been done, successfully, in humans. In Africa, during an Ebola outbreak, (this virus makes felv look like kids play) There were 10 or 12 people dying and the Dr. found someone who had survived the disease. A rare bird, I can tell you. The African dr. wanted to take blood from him, use the serum from his blood and give it to the sick ones. The western drs. were appalled and said no, but the African Dr.s said we have no options, they are dying. So they did it and I think about 8 or 9 lived and recovered. Anyone who has read anything about this disease knows it is what they call a "slate wiper" because only about 2 out of 100 survive it. Theory being, not enough gene pool would survive to continue the species. Anyway, it can work. the trick it finding a cat you are positive had it and go from there. I would be willing to do it, if we could find one. I think it is an avenue worth following. barb -------------------------------------- From: katseven@pcsia.com Date sent: Wed, 1 Apr 1998 19:25:58 -0600 Subject: Re: Ernie, odd dilation To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Thanks, Linda. This is not directed at you, by the way, since I assume you did not write "The Book of the Cat". Hope to have it done in a few days. Anabolic steriods are the ones weight lifters and such use to increase muscle mass. Basically, a male homone. but I will reseach that also. It will be so much easier to keep him clean. He won't like it and will prob be embarrased for a while, but he'll get over it! barb -------------------------------------- From: Newtanator Date sent: Wed, 1 Apr 1998 20:54:58 EST To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Surf Finds Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Cheri, Sounds like you are doing everything you can. Kidney infections can be nasty, but the cranberry powder is a great idea. I'm always telling my human patients to drink cranberry juice if they are prone to urinary tract infections. If the Clavamox doesn't show improvement in a few days, might want to try a different one. Bactrim is one used for people but I don't know if there is a cat equal. barb -------------------------------------- From: AskforArt Date sent: Wed, 1 Apr 1998 21:13:32 EST To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Ernie, odd dilation Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Well, I thought I remembered where I read that info, but can't seem to locate it now--silly me, read too much, I guess....if you want to get into some really gnarly info on cat health get: Cat Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook by Delbert G. Carlson, D.V.M. & James M. Griffin, M.D. It costs $24.95 and goes into alot of detail about cat physiology and disease. You still might want to have an eye exam done at the next visit, just to make sure it isn't anything else. But so far this hasn't caused Hoover any problems. I had/have several Felv positive cats who's eyes do that. One in particular, John, who lived 8 years with Felv, had this for at least 6 of those 8 years. I know its hard not to but please try not to worry too much about this with Ernie. The best to you and Ernie! Also, getting his belly shaved definitely sounds like a good idea, especially compared to a bath. We have to do that at work for a lot of animals to keep them clean, and it seems to do the job, and it also keeps their skin from becoming irritated from whatever it is that's making them messy. Good luck at the vet's on Friday for the chemo. I hope Ernie handles everything okay. My thoughts and prayers are with you. It took my Moira only two days after I knew that she had it. I'm sorry to hear about your kitty--what is his name? I don't really know very much so I can't really tell you what to do to help him, but there are a lot of people here that have a lot of information on the disease and will do all they can to help you. Don't give up on him. I will be thinking of the two of you. Let us know how he is doing. Since Moira's gone, his only playmate is the dog, so I'm thinking about maybe getting another felv+ cat, but I'm not the only one who makes the decisions around here, and it will probably take a lot of coaxing to get my mom and sister to want to take in another cat with a disease. It's been on my mind a lot lately, though. Keigan seems really bored and lonely sometimes. As for why I give him Science Diet--we were just feeding him grocery store brands of cat food before we found out that he had felv, and my vet said I should put him on a healthier, more balanced diet, and suggested Science Diet. He also said Iams is fine, so you shouldn't be concerned. Good luck getting Honey to calm down. I'm glad Qetta and Gretchen are enjoying themselves!
