I am South African and live in Pretoria - so very very sorry about your loss...people say that one gets used to the deaths over the years (I used to breed Siamese) but how to get used to the death of one's children? So sorry again - I am struggling with 4 cats: I have an excellent vet in Fourways who gave me hope again after my own simply wanted to euthanize... The pain is as real and fresh every single time I lose one. Every one of them are individuals and have unique personalities. Like you so rightly put it, how do you get used to losing your children? I think maybe she is hiding because she doesn't want you giving her the medicine. If it makes you feel any better, whenever any of my positive cats become very sick, they seem to seek out the warmest spots, near registers, on blamkets, etc. I worry whenever I see any one of them spend lots of time near warm areas. Let us know what the vet says today. Judy -------------------------------------- From: "James G. He was bitten by a snake 4 weeks ago but thankfully recovered well.
However he has been coming down with fevers and has been very lethargic within the last two weeks. A blood test revealed he has a weak positive result to Feline Leukemia. My vet has given me a broad spectrum antibiotic to give to him and also wants to give him a long lasting Cortisone injection.
Can anyone give me any suggestions on treatment i.e should I treat him now and with what or should I let him try and fight it by himself?
After reading up on this terrible disease I am frantically worried about him.
Please, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...I dont want to lose my precious baby. She is now down to 6.3 lbs. At her heaviest, she was 9.6 lbs. It was very hard to hear that since she looks better and we've watched her eat. Hopefully, the Doxycline will begin to do it's stuff and the Hemobart will disappear and she'll do better. The vet doesn't think there is a problem with her thyroid - she thinks that her problems of late are due to the low rbc. We're inclined to agree with her on that one, but if things don't improve, we'll check. She also does not want us to increase the prednisone any higher than what Rissa-Tai is already on (7 1/2 mg. per day - at the most, she was taking 15 mg. per day). She fought them some on the IV Immunoregulin, we may have to go to administering it sub-q. Rissa seems to want to be a bit more social, as she came out to watch me put on my makeup this morning (one of her favorite things to do). However, she can be quite stubborn and what she mostly wants to eat lately are the Trader Joe cat cookies someone here on the list had suggested. We think she likes to hear the crunch they make. Hopefully, we'll be able to convince her to eat a little more. I'm ready to bring out the heavy artillery - SARDINES. You have covered all bases relating to meds, vitamins and enzyme boosters, and need not think that you've left any stone unturned. Show a little compassion for yourself today, and good luck at the Vet. .marilyn. -------------------------------------- Date sent: Mon, 30 Mar 1998 10:24:17 -0600 (CST) From: "Nancy A. I know the thought of losing him is very scarey for you (it is with all of us and our beloved pets), but you haven't lost him yet. If and when you do, you will be brave and we will all help you. But don't give up the fight just yet; you know he has come through other hard times. Healing thoughts . . . She may be running a slight fever-usually cats (animals) will choose the ideal spot for themselves. Maybe soon she'll come out agaiin to stay! Schmall" To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Rissa-Tai, latest update Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Pam, Sorry to hear Rissa-Tai has lost more weight; perhaps the loss is still from when whe was not eating so well, and even though she's eating better now, the gain hasn't shown up yet. Also, after all these months of bringing Jake to the vet, I have found that his weight vaccillates dramatically. One week the scale said he gained a pound; the next week he was a pound lighter! Go figure! The fact that she's perking up seems to indicate she's doing better. Have you tried digestive enzymes on her--they will help her body absorb more nutrients as well as calories. Also, Nutrical--have you tried that yet; sometimes my cats will eat it, sometimes not. I apologize if I'm repeating what others have suggested. It gets confusing as to what's been posted and what hasn't. I don't blame the vet for not wanting to increase her prednisone---15 mg. is an awful lot for a little cat. I hope she does better on the Doxycyline. I guess I'd bring out just about anything she'll eat. Good thoughts . . . Nancy -------------------------------------- From: "Claude Horstmann" To: Subject: Rissa-Tai Date: Mon, 30 Mar 1998 16:04:29 -0500 Reply-to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi Pam: I didn't realize that Rissa-Tai was still on such a high dose of the Prednisone. I would have posted this earlier. Among the adverse reactions and side effects are: depression, anorexia, decreased wound healing, weight loss, increased susceptibility to infections. Daily doses should be given in the AM, and with meals to minimize stomach upset. Tapering down on the dosing is mandatory to reduce the risk of adrenal insufficiency.( This is straight out of my Davis's Drug Guide for Nurses.) And while I do know that Prednisone has a place in the grand scheme of things, the side effects mimic the symptoms that we associate with FeLV and anemia too. Heavy artillery huh ? You're lucky you have SARDINES to tempt your little vixen with, I'm going to try the CATNIP..... on myself ! :) .marilyn. -------------------------------------- Date sent: Mon, 30 Mar 1998 18:20:18 +0000 From: JB Organization: KAT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Sad message Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net I'm sitting here reading your letter and crying I know what your going through, it never gets easy, we love our babies so much and I to feel I try to do all I can and yet its just not enough to keep them with us. The antibiotics are ok, but please no steriods. Nina, on this list mentioned that it could be a carry over somehow from the snake bite and that is always a possiblity. Also, the in house FeLV tests are notorious for not always being accurate. What kind of snake was it? IF this was my cat, I would retest in one month. If still positive, then run an IFA test. I would start her immediately on ImmunoRegulin, or Baypamun (if it is available where you are, it is unfortunately not available in the states), beef up the nutrition and vitamins, particularly the B complexes and C. Please keep in touch and let us know how you are doing, join our group, we always have room! Good Luck.
