This afternoon I gave her mashed up mackeral from the can, she really wanted it bad she tried to eat and ran from it and came back again to try. Called vet about nystatin he said it was to strong, bull hockey. Tried some golden seal herb. Wetted my finger and stuck it in her mouth on the side the tooth was pulled. Maybe some relief for awhile. I'm going to go to our UT Veterninary Hospital and see what they think. I will let you know. I have some violet medicine used to use it on my kids cuts and scrapes. Why not just a little I dont think that would cause any harm to her ...TTYL, Jani -------------------------------------- Date sent: Fri, 27 Mar 1998 23:49:00 +0000 From: LawBet Organization: Home for Wayward Felines To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Rissa-Tai is not doing well Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Pam, Thyroid problem is a possibility. Hold her and love her all that you can. Sing "her" song softly to her. Baby talk her. Keep her warm. If you have a parabolic heater, aim it on both of you while you hold her. Stroke her and stroke her. warmly, greg & Pooters II, + 10 -------------------------------------- From: WORKPARK Date sent: Sat, 28 Mar 1998 05:15:07 EST To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Rissa-Tai & thyroid problem Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi Larry, When Rissa-Tai first got sick, and we didn't know what was wrong with her and she came back negative on the ELISA, we took her to the Internist, and she had an enlarged spleen, so they did a spleen aspirate. The results showed "lymphoid hyperplasia" which they said was expected for an anemic cat. That''s when the IFA test was suggested, and she came back positive. They also suggested the protein electrophoresis, because of her elevated proteins, and that's when we discovered the plasma cell myoloma. She is mostly a traditional vet but seemed quite up to date on the latest info I have seen discussed here, and read in Dr. Stein's books. And she is amenable to some holistic medicine. She even referred me to another vet, in Sherman Oaks, CA, I believe, a Dr. Nancy Scanlan or Scanlon, who is a holistic practitioner. What's more, Dr. McFarland offered to work in conjunction with her, to team up, if I wished-- whatever I wanted-- to help Pooters! I have seen a lot of mention here on the list, perhaps by James Wilson (and certainly others), about the "gut feeling factor", when seeing a vet for the first time. It is so true, to follow your first instinct about vets, or human doctors. The moment Tracy entered the examination room and introduced herself, offering her hand for a shake, she spoke soothingly to Pooters. I liked that. I said, "Doc, I can't begin to tell you how much this little girl means to me," and told her Pooters' story. The Doc then sat and said, "Greg, I am at your disposal." I knew I had come to the right place. It felt right, immediately. She sat there, relaxed and patient, in no hurry to move on to the next client (although she is quite busy there), and talked and listened with me about Pooters for and hour or better before getting down to business. I have never encountered this kind of bedside manner before in a vet, sorry to say, and only once in a human doctor. (I'm sorry, I know I said "just a short note," but I am so excited for Pooters to have found Dr. McFarland.) Okay. The cyst on the left side of her neck. The Doc took a syringe with a tiny needle and withdrew the fluid from the cyst. She held it up for me to see and talked about it. She felt confident there was no cause for alarm, but immediately took it back to "put under a slide." Shortly she returned, with a slight smile, and said the magic word I was holding my breath for: "Benign." I sagged back into the chair, so relieved. It was a fluid-filled cyst. Doctor McFarland is also having done the following: cytology (3 stain) urinalysis aspirate centesis bladder profile comp plus C-1 The blood work was to be back today, Friday. Pretty fast. I was up all night with Pooters, so I was exhausted and slept during the day. And I am terrified of what the blood work will reveal anyway, so I didn't call the Doc for the results today (Friday). I will call today thought. My fingers, and heart are crossed. Gotta go hold her now. Thanks for reading. All you need is Love..... Sincerely, greg & Pooter Toot Toot, +10 -------------------------------------- From: Newtanator Date sent: Sat, 28 Mar 1998 09:24:43 EST To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Rissa-Tai & thyroid problem Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Pam, I think the thyroid tests are T3 and T4, at least in humans. When I read Larry's letter I was smacking my forehead. Of course! It certainly is worth testing for. barb -------------------------------------- From: Newtanator Date sent: Sat, 28 Mar 1998 09:27:27 EST To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Pooters II, cyst Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net greg, this vet sounds like a real find. I never heard of Nystatin being to strong, but...Someone posted something about a treatment for mouth sores but now I can't remember what if was. Anyone save it? Maybe is can be reposted. barb -------------------------------------- From: Newtanator Date sent: Sat, 28 Mar 1998 09:37:38 EST To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Survivors Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Paula and Andrew, Indeed, steriods have to be weaned off slowly. They can do good, but can also do terrible damage if not handled correctly. I am going to look up exactly what happens when steriods are withdrawn suddenly and post it. It's important to know I think. barb -------------------------------------- Date sent: Sat, 28 Mar 1998 10:37:43 +0000 From: JB Organization: KAT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Ernie Update Cyprohepatadine Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Barb, What do you think about Aloe Gel to rub on her gums. I was dabbing the golden seal on my finger and putting in her mouth, I dont think that was helping. Anyway I'm taking monday off to try the UT Vet Hospital. Wish me luck finding the best doctor who cares enough to try. It is so hard to lose a kitty even though we may have many. Bless your heart for keeping March and Pooh even though they tested positive for diseases. This is a wonderful group and I'm sure you will like being here. Nancy -------------------------------------- Date sent: Sat, 28 Mar 1998 07:00:25 -0600 (CST) From: "Nancy A. Holistic living including alternative therapies and homepathic medicines are wonderful and can do a lot of good. But I feel personally that they should be used in conjunction with allopathic medicines, not in place of. The person who says "throw all your medicine away and do it naturally" is a person who is not well-informed. I speak from experience. Many years ago I did that, but instead of throwing my medicines away I tried to wean myself off. I ended up in the hospital. That's when I decided the two could work together just fine. Also, I was married to a man who was a polio victim. He contracted it the year before the Salk Vaccine. He would also say, "Why don't people understand that the reason we do not have polio is because kids get vaccinated?" I believe there's a time and a place for alternative medicine, but not in place of good ole' modern medicine. I think the best thing we can do is educate ourselves! I would seriously think about increasing her Prednisone. You can always lower it when she stabilizes. I have heard that the clay serves as a natural cleansing agent and cats sense this. You can buy green cosmetic clay from a natural foods store. There is a woman who did this (written up in Prevention magazine), broke the clay into pieces and rubbed it into her cat's fur--the cat had FELV and would lick litter and clay pots. Along with love and lots of vitamins and good food and antibiotics, the cat got better. I think this woman was awfully lucky! You and Rissa-Tai are in my thoughts. I am concerned that your vet took her off Prednisone completely. If I remember correctly, she was on a very high dose. Wouldn't it have been better to wean her off? How about antibiotics in case of a secondary bacterial infection? I think the new round of immunoregulin is a good idea. I have started my Panther on raw thymus glandular as I've heard it stimulates T-cells. Please know you are in my thoughts.
