It's hard for kids to realize that we can't fix everything. Someday she will understand. I have three positives myself. Healthy at the moment and I hope they stay that way. I have lost several already. How many do you have altogether? I have 15, I think. I must count noses here someday. Fortunately, just the three that are positive. All were treated early on, before any sickness with ImmunoRegulin and I really think that helped ward off problems. Now I just give them "booster" shots now and then. So far so good. barb -------------------------------------- From: Newtanator Date sent: Thu, 19 Mar 1998 21:24:52 EST To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Hello. Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Cheri, Pau d'Arco is a herbal suppliment that just helps the body heal itself a little better. It's not expensive and I doubt it does any harm. It doesn't seem to have much of a taste and they don't mind it. I take it myself sometimes. Everybody on the list that knows me, knows I am not a fan of prednisone except in extreme emergency. But I'm not a vet, it's just my personal feelings about them. Just remember, you can't just suddenly stop them. Rissa must be weaned off of them over 10 days to 2 weeks. So plan ahead on when you want to stop them and work from there. Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Judy, Loosing Merlin has only made me even more resolved to work towards finding everything and anything that might help them. There is no doubt prevention is the best, but once they have it, the earlier the treatment, the better. A big part of what we do is try to keep our vets up to date. I'm always dropping something off for mine to read. Would your vet be interested in being listed in our vet list? With your cats, he must have a lot of experience. barb -------------------------------------- Date sent: Thu, 19 Mar 1998 21:59:20 +0000 To: felvtalk@MailingList.net From: BILL BEAMISH Subject: Re: Welcome Judy!! Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Thank you, Dana. I really feel welcome here! Yes, I rescue strays still but now I know much more than I did 14 years ago when I found Chester. I was coming home from work around 8 P.M. on a Saturday night in September when I saw this cat in the middle of the highway. He had been hit but he was alive and he had his head up, looking around with this absolutely terrified look in his eyes. And all these cars just kept zooming past him. I slammed my brakes on and turned my car around the wrong way so my headlights were facing the oncoming traffic. I know this sounds crazy but I was sure someone would come barreling by and just smash him into the ground. I jumped out of my car and scooped him up, didn't even take time to look him over - just put him into the front seat next to me and rushed him to the emergency vet clinic. He was so scared he peed all over himself and my seat and by the smell I knew he was an unneutered male. I never did get the smell out of my car but I wasn't thinking about that then. I explained to the emergency vet that he wasn't my cat but could he please call me and tell me how he was. He called about 2 hours later and told me he wasn't badly hurt, the car must have just nicked him. He was treating him for shock and did I want him? I said I already had 5 cats. Then he said if I didn't want him they would have to turn him over to the SPCA on Monday and they would almost certainly put him to sleep. I COULDN'T let that happen so I went back over to the clinic, paid his substantial bill and brought him home. I kept him separated from the others until Monday when I took him to my own vet to be neutered and given his shots. I didn't know a thing about feline leukemia, had not a clue he had it, and actually, vets at that time didn't even test routinely. There wasn't a vaccine for Felv then, either. So I assumed I was bringing home a healthy cat to live with my other five. Exactly 3 months later, my oldest cat, Fluffy, 9 years old, came down with an unexplained fever and THATS when my vet suggested testing for FeLV. Of course, she tested positive and when I brought my other 5 in, 4 of them were positive. I was devastated. I felt so guilty. I unknowingly gave my precious cats a death sentence. I lost the first one within 2 months but the other 4 lived between 4-6 years. Since that time, I have made it my goal to help Felv positive cats and to do everything I possibly can to eradicate this disease. Well, enough rambling on my part, too. Thanks again. From: naohalloran@juno.com (Naomi J O'Halloran) Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Welcome to the list Judy! I'm a newcomer too-- just joined last week. What you and your husband are doing is absolutely wonderful. It's so nice to hear of someone who has kitties that live for so long with the disease. Sad to hear of your losing Lucy. I just lost my kitty Moira last Friday. That's when I found out about the list. The people here are so wonderful and caring. You'll be very happy to have found them. I know I am. I am using interferon for my other kitty, Keigan, who got FELV from Moira, but is perfectly healthy right now. I just started that last Friday, a couple days after I found out that he was positive, and I also started feeding him Science Diet food, and giving him Nutri-cal as a vitamin supplement. I still have to get to the health food store to get him some Vitamin C. My vet said to give him about 125mg of that everyday. We are also waiting for Acemannan to come in. According to the veterinary medicine books that we have at work (I work at a vet's office) it is not only for tumors. It is also used as an immunostimlant, and it said that using that or immunoregulin along with the interferon was the best way to try to keep them healthy. I wanted to use immunoregulin because I had heard so many good things about it from here and sites on the internet, but I decided to go with the Acemannan instead, because immunoregulin has to be given IV, and Keigan is a really naughty patient, and would never go for that. The acemannan is still a shot, but at least not IV, so it should be easier for me to give it to him, and I can do that at home, and wouldn't have to take him back and forth to the vet. He REALLY hates going to the vet. If you have any other suggestions, I would really appreciate them. Hope the info about the acemannan helps! Keep up the great work!
