You said she had both tests done. One of the tests will give the stage at which the Felv has advanced to--- if she was at either level 1 or 2, she could be negative now. They can still rid themselves of the disease at those two levels, and she should be retested if her results were less than stage three. Fortunately, there are a few vets around who give it to people they know well, who use it the 48 hour rhythm and/ or prefer giving the injections themselfes. That way, I got it for my Charlie. It's called vaccinosis, and is more common than you may think. (Almost every case of polio in the US is caused by the vaccine.) Injecting a modified live virus into a cat with an impared immune system seems like risky business to me, but after my experience, you can understand why I feel that way. As vegans, it is very difficult for my husband and I to feed animal products to our cats. The suffering involved for the cows, chickens, etc is really disgusting and I'm sure that the quality of "pet" food is pretty bad. We looked into putting our 20 cats on a vegetarian diet (there is an excellent book called "vegetarian cats and dogs" -if anyone is interested I can forward the info). It is sad to say but we just cannot afford to do this. The cost of the supplement for 20 cats is extremely prohibitive at this point and, with both of us working, it would bes very difficult to make sure that their nutritional needs were met on a vegetarian diet (what if one doesn't eat enough of the supplement? problems like that..). I'm sure that if we only had 1 or 2 cats that we would definitely put them on a vegetarian diet and closely monitor them. So, until we hit the lotto we have to deal with this moral dilemma (a close vegan friend of mine is having the same problem-she has 10 cats). Many vegetarians/vegans won't keep cats because of this. I just can't justify blowing off a species (dogs can be veg without any potential problems) because they are carnivorous. I'd really appreciate any other vegetarians on the list to reply with their feelings and thoughts. It definitely is FELV related because nutrition is very important-never hurts to add fresh, raw veggies to their food-George just loves peas and orange juice (cats actually crave greens!!). Thanks for listening and again, if anyone is interested in the book , I can tell you where to get it and the VEGEPET supplement. That is the only reason she has not been retested yet. I know how important this is though. I think my pep talks are working on myself and hopefully I will have her retested next Saturday? Trying the Neupogen would certainly seem to be in order here. There are 3 things I can suggest that could help. In immunosuppressed ainmals we can supplement their bactewrial gut flora with "good bugs" so they do not have to deal with the "bad" ones themselves. Infinity's Total Flora Support contains a patented, partially antibiotic resistant correct bacterial flora for animals, This allows it to continue to survive and be easily replaced again when antibiotics are needed to treat a disease. Digestive enzymes are helpful to allow better utilization of food. I use Digest A Meal from Infinity, but Prozyme will work also. Viokase is not very effective compared with these. Lastly, antioxidants will assist in the prevention of tissue damage. I like a procyanidin and curcuminoid combination and use Infinity's Super Antioxidant for this. There are others out there that will also do the job, but this one works for me. You may e-mail me directly for information on these products if you wish. I do know the Infinity products are compatible with antibiotics, corticosteroids and chemotherapy. M. W. Myers, D.V.M. -------------------------------------- Reply-To: From: "AZ-HART" To: "felvtalk" Subject: Nasty Business: The Arizona Humane Society Date: Sun, 8 Mar 1998 11:45:00 -0700 THE ARIZONA HUMANE SOCIETY SEIZES CONTROL--- n all my years of animal rescue, this one stands out. The biggest animal shelter in Phoenix, The Arizona Humane Society, has recently used Gestapo tactics to trample over many of the smaller rescue groups in town. IF THE AHS WANTS TO, THEY CAN--- Claiming they "didn't have enough animals to fill the cages" at the dozen or so Petsmarts in town in which they were doing cat and dog adoptions, it was decided that the Arizona Humane Society would limit its adoptions to handful of Petsmart stores, those closest to the AHS shelter in NW Phoenix. They would be pulling out completely from some of the Petsmarts. The bad news? They will be taking over completely the Petsmart adoptions centers in the stores they chose to continue doing adoptions from. This means that any rescue group other than the Arizona Humane Society at the Petsmarts they are "taking over" is out, effective immediately. The AHS wanted those adoption slots, they got it. OVER 2 YEARS OF PERSONAL SACRIFICE AND DEDICATION TO ANIMALS, OUT THE WINDOW--- Arizona Homeless Animals Rescue Team (AZ-HART) has been doing animal rescue, as individuals, for over 10 years. As a non-profit Arizona organization, we started doing adoptions at Petsmart on Super Bowl Sunday, January 1996. For over 2 years, we have sacrificed our personal time as Volunteers to do adoptions at the Peoria, AZ, Petsmart, and we were just informed yesterday morning that we are out and the Arizona Humane Society is taking over completely at that store. This was the first I'd heard of it, despite the fact that I had spoken with Petmart Charities less than 2 weeks ago to inquire about a rumor I'd heard that Petsmart was trying to get all the smaller rescue groups out and work with only the Humane Society. Petsmart Charities told me at that time there was no truth to that rumor. Well, apparently there was a great deal of validity to that rumor. THE OPTION OF ANOTHER ADOPTION SITE, A SHORT 45-MINUTE DRIVE! Petsmart has given the displaced animal rescue groups the "option" of relocating and doing adoptions in the stores vacated by the AHS. Not much of an option at all, considering those of us in the NW Phoenix Valley would have to now drive 45 minutes or more to the next closest "available" Petsmart to do adoptions, instead of the current 10 minute travel time and the convenience in having adoptions near us, as the AHS has chosen to do. THE UNWANTED ANIMAL PROBLEM IN PHOENIX IS ENOURMOUS--- What are the sad facts here? There are over 60,000 animals destroyed ("euthanized") in Maricopa Country (Phoenix) annually. The Arizona Humane Society euthanizes animals because it accepts all that come in the door and, as a result, cannot keep them all indefinately because they fill up fast. The AHS does exactly what the tax-funded Pound has no choice but to do, except the AHS has a glorified status because of who they are, and the Pound is an easy target for all to beat up as being the "bad guys". (You'd be surprised at the enormous good the Animal Control Shelter in Maricopa County are doing, they have Second Chance programs and fostering and all sorts of above-and-beyond efforts to help save more animals, for which they get no recognition because of who they are.) The AHS is funded through donations and corporate sponsors. DO NOT MAKE THE MISTAKE IN thinking Phoenix has solved its massive pet overpopulation problem and that the Arizona Humane Society or any other shelter is not inundated with unwanted and stray animals. No shelter in town could absorb all of the animals being disposed of or turned in, there are simply far far too many. Rescue groups and shelters that do not practice euthanasia as a means of keeping their numbers down and providing open space for new animals, cannot accept every animal. Other shelters that euthanize will accept every animal, but many of those accepted, even healthy adoptable ones, will be euthanized because sheer numbers prevent shelters from keeping them all until they are adopted. "NOT ENOUGH ANIMALS TO FILL UP THE CAGES", Really? So, you tell me how a shelter that admits to being inundated with animals, particularly cats during certain times of the year, that practices euthanisia because it cannot keep every animal forever, can possibly "not have enough animals to fill the cages" at the dozen or so Phoenix Petsmarts? Sounds strange to me. PACK YOUR THINGS AND LEAVE, YOU DON'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE--- The Arizona Humane Society has taken our Adoption day from us, and we are left out in the cold. Most rescue organizations do not have the luxury of large shelter facilities from which to do adoptions, and rely on Pet "superstores" or other facilities that donate Adoption space. The Arizona Humane Society has their own shelter, and still it has displaced many smaller rescue organizations from Adoption Sites which the smaller organizations have occupied for years, in the name of "efficient business practices". It's like someone knocking on your door in the middle of the night and saying you don't live here anymore, and someone else is moving in the next morning, pack your things and leave. Immediately. TOO BAD, SORRY, "WHATEVER"--- To add insult to injury, we went to do adoptions Saturday night at the other Adoption slot we had at another Petsmart, having verified earlier in the day that we still had that Adoption location and time. Standing there with 17 animals ready to be placed in the Adoption Center, we find that the Arizona Humane Society has mistakenly left their animals in all of the adoption cages, and the volunteers had left with their truck. I called the AHS to ask them to come get their animals, we are standing here ready to do adoptions in our time slot and they have failed to remove their animals. The AHS person could not locate a person to come and get their animals. I was pretty shaken at this point having already been kicked out of my Sunday adoption site by the AHS and arriving at my remaining Adoption site to find I could not do adoptions. When I demanded that they come and get their animals, the AHS said there was nothing he could do. I stated that I would have to take the animals out of their cages and put them in top cages so I could do my Adoptions. The AHS representative said "Whatever...". I walked into the Adoption center to find there were not enough empty cages on top to relocate the animals in the cages I needed for Adoptions; I was stuck. I could not do adoptions. I had 17 cats with me, 3 people due to arrive with animals, and I was stuck because the Arizona Humane Society had wrongly left their animals in the cages and would not come and get them so I could do adoptions. But they DID dispatch an AHS officer ("the AHS police") with a truck to the Petsmart, telling them we were going to throw their animals out the door. Isn't that sad? The AHS could use up resources provided by people sending in their donations, to send an AHS truck to shake their finger at us as if to say "Naughty naughty leave our animals alone!", but they could not do the right thing and remove the animals so the rescue organization entitled to use that Adoption room could do their adoptions. Again, the little guy loses. THE AHS IS APPARENTLY "LORD OF THE DANCE"--- This is a sad time in Phoenix. The Arizona Humane Society is playing God, and they have trampled over many smaller rescue organizations, rescue organizations who have sacrificed their time and often their own money to try to help as many animals from being destroyed as possible. In Phoenix, no one has a voice except the AHS. What they say goes, at the expense of anyone in their way. This is a very very sad day in Phoenix. AHS CONTACT INFORMATION--- Anyone wishing to contact the Arizona Humane Society, may do so by Email, phone or mail. The Email address for the AHS is: arizonahumanesociety@worlnet.att.net You may write them at: The Arizona Humane Society, PO Box 47270, Phoenix, AZ 85068-7270. Their president is Ken White. The AHS phone number is (602) 997-7585. THIS TOWN IS BIG ENOUGH FOR ALL OF US-- If you believe a wrong has been done to us and other effected animal rescue organizations, we would appreciate hearing from you or having you voice your opinions with the Arizona Humane Society. The severe pet overpopulation problem in Phoenix demands that this town is "big enough for all of us", and you need to let the AHS know that they have no right to trample over everyone else. WILL THERE BE REPERCUSIONS? I expect repercusions as a result of speaking out against the Arizona Humane Society. They are big enough to cause all sorts of problems for anyone. They have their own column in the Phoenix newspaper, they get free publicity on a regular basis with all the networks, they have their own show on one of the networks, they are very well connected. This would all be well and fine, except for the disturbing fact that they apparently, as we have seen lately, won't hesitate to use their power to do as they please. DOES THIS MATTER TO ANYONE? AZ-HART is simply a small rescue group trying to make a big difference in Phoenix, and I am often left wondering, does that matter to anyone? Pretty exciting stuff!!! And, I've had my Felv cats on the Ambrotose for about three weeks now.
