I spend a lot of time with her, comforting her. Perhaps some of the strategies that have been suggested to me will make a difference for my little girl. Gonna give it a try anyway. Thanks for asking! My cat, Buddy, was diagnosed April 30, 1997 with FeLV. I have had him for more than 10 years, and he was a young adult when I found him. After a real close call last spring he was nursed back to health ( somewhat) and had been doing pretty well. About ten days ago his left pupil dilated and stayed that way for about 18 hours. By the time I got him into the vet, it had returned to it's normal size. About two days later, his iris started changing color, his pupil became misshapen, and his eye started looking swollen. Soon, it had clouded over. I went to the Vet school in my city and he saw a vet opthamologist who said both of his eyes are bad and have masses behind them. The vet school was pretty sure he had lymphoma and gave him only days to live. Thankfully, they said it would be quick. They did a relatively minor procedure ( bone marrow draw) to confirm the lymphoma, but it came back as non-diagnostic. So, I had prepared myself (as best one can) that the end was drawing near. I have trouble because he still acts like himself. I also got info that his toxoplasmosis test came back positive and that might be related to what is going on with his eyes. They recommended antibiotics. His glaucoma test in his left eye showed a very high pressure. I wanted to share Buddy's story and find out if anyone else out there has seen similar symptoms (in the eyes). I know glaucoma can be painful and I do not want him to suffer; he's been far too wonderful a companion to go through anything like that. But, I also want to what I can for him. I'm wondering if there is any medication that helps to reduce the pressure in the eye. Any other info would be great. I have a wonderful vet who actually called me at work while she was on vacation because she was wondering how Buddy was doing. Thanks to any and all who can help. I hope you are all comforted knowing you are doing truly wonderful work in caring for these little creatures. She's still having urinary track problems. My vet is having cultures done so she can treat her with an effective medicine rather than a shotgun type medicine. I am so glad I found this vet. She's a real God send. She loves the kittens she treats. I do have a question that I have been trying to figure out for a few days now. Since Copley's passing, February 20th, I realize that I need to continue having Fenway tested and this will continue, but after a few posts I have been extremely confused. Fenway has tested negative with the test used in the vet's office that only takes a few minutes. I am not sure which test that is? Shouldn't I have both the IFA and ELISA test used on her since they pick up different things? Why, generally, is only the one test done? Is there any amount of time that can pass with her testing negative when I can let go of some of the anxiousness? Your input is greatly appreciated. If I forgot anything that anyone thinks I would find useful that would be great too! - Cheryl DeSantis Account Manager Bradmark, Inc. 4265 San Felipe Suite 800 Houston, TX 77027 800-621-2808 http://www.bradmark.com -------------------------------------- Date sent: Fri, 06 Mar 1998 08:13:10 -0800 From: Dana Crow Organization: Magical Moments Preschool To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: posting others private mail re: Pooters II Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Can someonme please explain to me & others(?) what it was that Greg was doing incorrectly? Just a couple short suggestions: you might want to call veterinarians in your area who might be willing to treat Pooters II at a discount since you have limited resources. That's what I would do anyway--I would also start her on Pet Tinnic since it is a highly recommended supplement and not too costly, for anemia. If you could get it from a veterinary supply store, it would be cheaper as would other supplements, foods, etc. Also, since interferon is so good and also not too costly, I would certainly begin with that--also vit. C. Some of the high nutritional foods are so costly, but I personally believe that even if you can't afford them, you could mix them with a cheaper food or add some of the"human" food that were suggested--egg yolks (raw or lightly cooked), raw liver, etc. Hope this helps, good luck, and the Force be with you! So far, we're still doing ok. She is now up to 7 lbs. 5 oz. (that's a half- pound gain in a week!!!). The vet checked her eye out, and whatever was bothering her, is gone. We think she may have slightly scratched it when she was taking care of an itch, but it has now healed. The only thing today, is the vet said her blood still looked watery, so we know she is still anemic, but we'll know more once they check it at the lab - and we'll also be able to tell if her wbc has improved any. We go to see the oncologist on Tuesday to see what we can do about the plasma cell myoloma, if she even has it. At this point, until we talk to her, we're not planning on changing anything in Rissa-Tai's routine, as she seems to be doing a little better - but as I said, that also depends on what comes back from the lab. Thanks everyone, for all the advice so far. I'll keep in touch with updates. If you are using Netscape, there is an "options" pull down window. Pull that down and go to "Mail and News Preferences"; then to "composition". At the bottom of that window you will see a line that says "Automatically quote original message when replying". Click on the little square to the left of that line to remove the check mark. The original message will no longer be quoted. If you use something other than Netscape for your e-mail, look for similar type pull down windows in your program. Most likely there will be some kind of "options" pull down window for you to do essentially the same as outlined above. Hope this helps. The main reason for this site is for support and advice from all of us that have or are now going through these illnesses with our kitties. Most of us are already at the breaking point and if someone got on you about something you did well then shame on them. To my knowledge I think we have all read everyone elses mail regardless of how it is sent and I personally don't write anything that I wouldn't want everyone to see. So chill, you're just fine. You're doing the most important thing anyway and that is taking care of your kitty. Hang in there. My felv kitty was terribly anemic in August 1997 and it turned out that he had hemobartinella, which comes from an insect bite. I think its a virus. It alters the red blood cells so that the body attacks and kills its own cells. I had to give him tetracycline three times a day for three weeks to kill the virus, and shots of prednasone subcutaneously to keep him from destroying his own cells. Then he went on oral prednasone for a long time, eight weeks or so, and his dose was gradually lowered until we could take him off. His red cell count is fine. He's up from around 8 pounds to 12 and seems quite healthy. You have to go looking for this hemobartinella. It is very subtle and can look like other things. That is when we discovered he had felv. Eye irregularities are not uncommon in FeLV cats. My Merlin also has an odd pupil in one eye and the Iris in the other is hard to describe. I call it looking like a lava lamp. The lava part is a different color from the rest. When my vet saw it, he said he also had tumors, but I had no tests run. He thought he would be dead in days or short weeks. Of course, Merlin was totally paralysed at the time from a massive inner ear infection. Merlin can now walk, hear, and tho I don't know if his eyesight is impared, it doesn't seem to be. There are eye drops for glaucoma, at least for humans, I don't see why they couldn't be used for cats as well, but there are differences in our eyes. one is epinephrine hydrochloride, used for wide angle glaucoma. Another is Betoptic (betaxolol hydrochloride) used for ocular hypertention. (high pressure). One thing we all learn on this list is we have to be ready for anything. Our cats come up with the common and the bizzare. We try to treat them as they come. I would suggest starting ImmunoRegulin and Interferon and perhaps a nutritional suppliment called Ambrotose. Also, be careful with Vit A. I just found our at work, (I'm a nurse) that to much Vit A can damage the optic nerve. I hope this helps, but never give up. My Merlin is still here despite all the gloom and doom from my vet. All his symptoms did point to tumors in the brain or spinal cord, but I think he would be dead by now if that was it. So I take each day at a time and am thankful for each one.
