Checked in one of my herb books, and its used to increase the WBC and strengthen the immune system response. According to Chinnese medicine, this herb should not be used if there is a rapid pulse or fever, as it can make those conditions worse. And, the book I quoted from in another e-mail, "Natural Healing for Dogs and Cats" by Diane Stein, ISBN 0-89594-686-6, had tons of information, and addresses Felv extensively. I can't find the address, but there's a site called "Your Animal's Health" with Dr. Wendell O. Belfield. In vol. 2 he talks about nutritional immunotherapy for Felv. "Natural Pet" magazine (1-800-735-9335) also has lots of good information, and costs $18.00 annually for 6 issues. It covers all types of holistic treatments. Another book-- "Herbal Remedies for Dogs and Cats: A Pocket Guide to Selection and Use" by Wulf-Tilford and Tilford ( 4 bucks!) Linda et al., Thank you, Linda, for your "soap box" speech. I, for one, back it up 100% :) Also, concerning Echinacea: This is the only group of people I've come across that use Echinacea on a long term basis. It was my understanding from human herbalists that it is best used at the moment of onset of an infection and only when really needed. My understanding is that it is more of a "helper" than a "preventer" if that makes any sense. There is an excellent article on this herb in an old Natural Pet Magazine by Gregory L. Tilford, Herbalist. I'm sorry I don't remember which one b/c my copy has no cite on it. But perhaps Pufferino may know since I think she originally directed my attention to the article. The article stresses that echinacea is intended to be used is a healthy immune system. Since part of FeLV can be a suppressed immune system I have not used echinacea, the article states, "When autoimmune function is diminished and white blood counts are low, it has been theorized that echinacea may cause a dangerous stimulatory response, triggering invading microbes to reproduce faster." Concerning long term use, the article discusses that a great controversy has risen about how long this herb can be used before the body builds a tolerance to it. It cites a German study from 1989 where humans were shown to have a diminished response to echinacea after 5-10 days. It also found, however, that longterm used produced a higher level of autoimmune activity than prior to administration. This particular author says he agrees with many other herbalists' rule of thumb of five days on w/2-3 days off. I hope this is helpful. I would be interested in hearing what a holistic vet has to say about using echinacea on FeLV positive cats. This article seems really resistant to using it where the immune system is not 100% healthy. This would seem to make it contraindicated for an FeLV+ cat. Curious to learn all of your thoughts! That old vet said the vaccine would protect the others. Have to get Tail and Heathen checked in a few days. Still running a little short, spent alot on Russian. I think my cats would have been lost without each other. Tail has already taken over Russian's old areas. And the two cats plus the dog are requiring more attention. My 90ty pound dog now tries to run through the house when I come home. We've had alot of pets and I'll always miss them But Russian the most. She was my bottle fed baby. Linda Those people I work with are ignorant sometimes. -------------------------------------- From: Newtanator Date sent: Fri, 27 Feb 1998 18:49:14 EST To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Birth announcement!! Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net All, Amongst all the sad news over the past few weeks, I mentioned only to Jim and my brother, that one of my girls, Polly, was with kitten. Obviously, this was not planned. I had only one unneutered male in the house other than Merlin,(and I know it wasn't him), and that was Polly's own brother. Polly, Dexter and Tavian, (Tavian is my son's cat now) came to me from a patients home where they had no heat, running water OR cat food. They were going to dump the youngsters outside, in the middle of winter to fend for themselvses. So, of course, they came home with me. Anyway, Polly is a polydactil, and she and brother Dexter, look like twins. Long haired tabby's. Tavian is a longhaired black. Anyway, with Christmas coming, I didn't have the extra money get Dexter in for his "operation" so when Polly came into season, I put her the bedroom that she shared with my Mom, who was visiting for Christmas. What happened was that my dear Mom, seeing Dex out of the bedroom, thought she had let Polly out and put him IN the room with her. Well, the rest is history. Two weeks ago, I took Polly far away from this house, over to my sons, where tho he has 3 of his own, including her brother Tavian, they are all felv negative. As much I would have loved to have babies here, and watch them grow, I had to control myself and get her out where they would be safe. I had a stern talk with Dexter about the impropiety of that kind of behavior with his sister, but I don't think he heard me. He has since made his trip to the vets, so it will NOT happen again. So three, new little lives have begun. The circle of life is complete. I will call the vet tomorrow and see if he wants to check Mom and babies and my son says she is very pleased with herself. His Oliver is not so happy about it, but Brisco and Tavian are curious about the new additions. They are eating well and she is being a good mom. Anyone passing near Todedo, Ohio, or Detroit in about 6 weeks, let me know. I have a kitten for you!! barb -------------------------------------- From: DLMLLM Date sent: Fri, 27 Feb 1998 18:49:36 EST To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: poster saying?? Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Kat, She had a straight from the mouth saying. I can never think of clever sayings to use on plaques I do up. I like to paint, tho never as good as my Mom was. I do small plaques and some pictures in acrlyics. I'll try to write it here. " Any Cat brought into this home will always have top priority for their health, comfort and utter happiness. They all will have ample opportunity and built in natural tools in which to assist me in cleaning under the beds and anywhere else they see fit." I can just visualize a poster with cats playing and this saying underneath. I know it's long but it fits. Something you could mount on your kitchen wall with other clever cat things. Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Boy, sure wish I was a bit better with words. I have to say, I was never that much of a cat person. My family had one cat. Tuffy, while I was growing up. Actually, we were babysitting for a relative and my Mom wouldn't give him back because she felt it was not a good home for him. What is ironic is that he died of leukemia at the age of 11. This was twelve years ago. I remember now watching him going down hill. He completely stopped eating and kept away from everyone. He was an outdoor cat and we wouldn't let him out anymore. He escaped one night when he knew it was time. I just remember being crushed. But I was young and I really took the poor guy for granted. I never understood the utter devastation of this disease. I remember at the time being told that this was the most common problem with cats and very typical!! My family convinced me to get Copley at a time I was living alone. I swore I would never get close to another pet. (I have lost a few dogs over the years.) Copley taught me so much. I now realize the wonders of being owned by a cat. My world revolved around Copley and now it revolves around Fenway. If I have to go away for business or now that I am planning some leisure trips again Fenway's emotional well being is my first concern. I didn't think I would ever get any more pets, but Copley and this list have convinced me it is one of my obligations. I will do anything to make sure they are happy. They get all the toys they want, all the love they want and more and whatever they need for their health. I will never forget Copley and he will always be my first little boy and the best!!!, in fact, I have this one area of emptiness that I can't imagine ever disappearing, but he taught me how others need looking after too. He will always have the biggest part of my heart, but there is lots of room left over. I apologize for spouting, but I wanted to convey how addictive the caring is on this list. But we do it because we love them and they love us back. Whether they are with us for 6 months or twenty years, their passing is no less painful. Just ask my brother, the lurker. Their Tuffy was 16 I think, he was their first cat. Because of the love they had for him, 13 have a home with them, including blind Kaelynn. They are Tuffy's legacy, tho he didn't sire a single of them. With me, all who have followed my dear Newt and Kallie are their legacy. Safe and warm as long as they live. That is what we do, we are catpeople. barb -------------------------------------- From: DLMLLM Date sent: Fri, 27 Feb 1998 20:06:06 EST To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Birth announcement!! Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi Barb It was always great when the kids were young to watch one of our cats have kittens. We did not always have the money either. Of course I was usually worse then the mother. I fretted more then they did. That is one option we never allowed Russian. She was too small. Now it would be nice to have a part of her here, a son or daughter.
