Schmall" To: FeLV Talk Subject: Re: Chloe Needs Help: Long Term Interferon Question Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Steve, I can't understand why your vet would want to retest Chloe either. It was my understanding that if it's in the bone marrow, the cat will have it for the rest of his life, that he can't revert to negative. Also, if Chloe's gums became pale after the interferon was withdrawn, it would be my conclusion that she still has FELV. I guess I'd ask my vet why she wants to retest. If it were me (and I tell this to my vet repeatedly) I'd rather spend the money on treatments than tests especially when they are treating the cat the same way no matter what the outcome of the tests show). It has taken me a long time to realize that some or most vets want to perform dozens of tests--sometimes I think without a good enough reason. It isn't because they want the money; I think it's because they are trained to be so clinically-oriented. I think the world of my vet and the entire vet clinic and I trust them implicitly (sp), but I do have to remind them from time to time, that if they're going to use the same antibiotic or whatever, no matter how the test turns out, then why test (since testing is so expensive). Anyway, didn't mean to get on my soapbox. I would be afraid to withdraw the Interferon; in fact I'm switching over to the every third day protocol with Panther and I am constantly second guessing myself--is this the right thing to do--that sort of thing. Since Interferon is only a treatment, not a cure, I would hesitate discontinuing it. As far as shots . . . if your cat is 100% indoors and not exposed to any other cats including your own I don't know that I would have her vaccinated. I will ask my vet on Monday why she is keeping my kitty on the Interferon for now. He is sick enough still that he can't come home yet. For some reason--they aren't sure why--he isn't walking. However, when he gets mad enough, he walks. The rest of the time, it seems to be too much trouble. The Vincristine is given only once a week and prevents the cells from dividing or migrating or something. I'll ask that again, too, although she did tell me this morning. Russian sleeping. Did transfusion, and she's so tired. This is the last thing we are putting her through unless it helps alot. Still had to force feed. Talking to vet Monday. Worked too hard today. Going to rest and rewatch Contact. And have 2 sloe gins. Have to feed her again. Then letting her sleep, I can use some to. My nerves are at an end, and I can't keeo my mind where it belongs. This is so really hard on all of us. We make a good group. Tried to e-mail Oprah, won't go through. Also Wal-Mart. Someone has to submit a letter or contact the Wal-Mart near where Jim lives. He can do it if he wants also. They do donations on a need basis. They could fix him up with a computer if they will. Will try to see on their e-mail where closet one is if I can. Check out the web site, might have respond box. Linda Will do the rest of the e-mail tomorrow. Only have about 60ty. -------------------------------------- Date sent: Sat, 21 Feb 1998 17:13:06 -0600 From: Cheryl and Michael To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: lose Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Kelly, Thank you for sharing this with us all. It has been very difficult dealing with this the way I did. I found selfish reasons for either way I chose. I wish it could have been more peaceful for Copley, however I am now happy that he was in a place he felt comfortable and enjoyed so much and surrounded by the people that cared for him. He always put up such a fuss at the vet and acted so scared and intimidated that I did not want that to be his last place. Your reminder of the pets 10 commandments helped. Thank you. -------------------------------------- From: "Cheri Gardiner" To: Subject: Re: Poem Date sent: Sat, 21 Feb 1998 18:29:58 -0600 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Steve, I missed the poem. Date sent: Sat, 21 Feb 1998 18:39:44 -0600 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Barb, thank for the answer about Ambrotose. My vet said to start the little ones on Vitamin C and baby B12 every other day 1/4 of a pill. I'll be anxious to hear about the literature you get from Ambrotose. My two get some extra vitamins thru the veggies baby food. They really love the peas, squash and sweet potato. How much enchinea do you crunch up? do you give it via spyringe (w/o needle)? This is their week off interferon and they are doing great. What about the ginko? How much there? My vet is great. She says anything is worth a try. Love her for that attitude. It does help she has 5-6 cats of her own. The cat I might take from the vet is a Siamese mix who has already had her FeLV shot and is FeLV+. Her owner doesn't want to put it to sleep and I guess he's moving in with someone who already has cats. Some are so cute and friendly. It is nice seeing them go to good homes. The cat I may get is a Siamese mix who has tested positive for FeLV. The owner is moving in with someone who already has cats. I should know more next week. I tried the baby powder when we found Mickey. He was only four weeks old and Kitty was the queen of the house and already 2 years old. It seemed to have helped. Plus Kitty liked the powder and rubbing it brought. When I got Chaz, just two weeks before Mickey died, I just throw them all in together. I didn't know it then but Mickey was already sick. He had developed an intestinal tumor and wouldn't eat. He was starving to death. The tumor was due to FeLV. I just don't want another cat put to sleep when it has no symptoms and just because their "parent" won't take care of it. Date sent: Sat, 21 Feb 1998 19:44:52 -0600 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Nancy, Did you get the Methio-Form from your vet? I'll call mine Monday. Kitty doesn't seem to be bothered too much by the problem. She does have a stinky bottom though. I keep her bottom end shaved fairly close. She's a Manz and has a very thick double coat of fur. She is on baytril half a pill a day right now. It has stopped helping or at least not helping as much. Dr Wang may want to run some more tests. As I write this, my little girl is curled up on the computer desk. When I'm at the computer, she's always right beside me. Such love! There are 50 treats and Max takes one a day. I also have started giving them occasionally to my other cat who had a URI about a month ago. The cats love them--the treats, that is. MY vet warned me that you have to keep the bottle capped as cats will eat several at a time; they taste so good. You might want to try them.
