I think she appreciated the contact and the concern at least as much as the food. After a couple of days, after the transfusion, IV, interferon and pred kicked in, she came around and today, 8 months later, is asymptomatic as could be and you could not buy a prettier winter coat than hers! As for "force feeding", you can liqufy food and supplements and administer by syringe, which I think Barb did with Merlin, but I would not do this for very long, it's just to keep their strength up while fighting acutely. When it becomes chronic and they don't want to fight anymore, so sadly, we must do the last thing we can to express our love... and let go. Let's hope it has not come to that, and try to get through the rest of the winter. -- Steve -------------------------------------- From: "James G. It can usually be found in the baby section of any grocery store or Walmart. It replaces the electrolites that the body has lost due to dehyration. It works quickly. My cats will actually drink the unflavored version with no problems. If the cat is very dehydrated, then I give them straight pedalyte (force-fed, if necessary). Hope this helps, TK -------------------------------------- From: DLMLLM@aol.com Date sent: Thu, 19 Feb 1998 16:43:45 EST To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Nutri cal Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Barb, You live not too far from me. The vet told us to let Russian sleep through the night, also because we are worn out. I worry about this. I lost a beautiful dog to stomach cancer three years ago. We did not know he had it but I felt so guilty because he went alone. It was so much worse then what Russian had. If she did not like something she tried to cover it up like her doo doo. She had favorites that she won't eat now and she is tiring of the AD. She fights every meal. We are still optomistic as is the vet. The interferon has helped. I could tell after the first dose. It tired her greatly to fight with the vet today. She will not touch chicken, liver or other favorites. But her three spots where the teeth were pulled have not completely healed yet. So they are still tender. It is taking awhile to heal. It has so much stuff I couldn't begin to list it all. But two teaspoons are all a cat needs to live. All the vitamins, protein etc. It's about 10 bucks for a tube of it. Looks like brown toothpaste and surprisingly, Merlin liked it. It will be in the baby section. It is given to babies when they have diarrhea and such. It is not just fluids, but electrolytes needed by the body to live and work, like Potasium and Sodium. It has alot of iron and vitamins. We wrap Russian in a towel and give her the AD with a syringe from the vets. We have the battle scars to prove it. Be patient, wipe off the dribble. We warm the food for 10 sec. have already added the water to liquidify it. She likes warm food. Barb -------------------------------------- Date sent: Thu, 19 Feb 1998 19:03:09 -0500 From: Brad To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: togetherness Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Michele, 4 yrs ago I had a kitten (8 mos) that had FIP. I had him since he was 2 mos. At the time, I had a cat 1 yr older. The vet warned me about the other cat getting it. The kitten went so fast, 1 wk from diagnosis to his lungs filling up, that I really didn't have a chance to separate them. My older cat went on to living 5 more yrs w/o so much as a sniffle and he spent time outside. Now, I had to make the choice to separate Wuzzy from Beast and Storm. I decided not to. I am a firm believer in God's will. The FIP that Storm and Beast have (had) is only contagious before the symptoms show (or so I've read) so Wuzzy would have already contracted it at that point. As far as the FeLV is concerned, I am having him tested this wkend and a booster FeLV. He is 4 yrs and has been vaccinated. They say that his age and his health along with his vaccinations, will protect him (or so I've read). I know nothing is 100%. But I made the choice to keep them together. I stand by my decision. He took such good care of Storm and Beast. He cries when he can't find them (now it's just Beast). In some ways it is heartwarming, except at 4 in the morning! I would not separate my kids, so why my cats. If it is God's will that Wuzzy gets it, then so be it. It may sound like a death sentence, but I have faith. Why did God give my babies these dreaded diseases? No one knows. Just as no one knows what the future holds. Michele, it is all your decision. I will send a preayer your way that you find the strength to make the right decision (whatever that may be). The interferon turnaround is powerfully good news, it seems like there's time to turn back the virus replication if we can turn back all the opportunistic problems. I know it's tough right now but it does sound hopeful. Vet trauma is really bad for cats, even healthy ones. What a paradox. -------------------------------------- END OF PART 3: See Part 4 at: http://www.geocities.com/HotSprings/Spa/8025/9802194.txt
