Here's a site with info on organizations who have computing hardware to donate to non-profit causes. It's worth a try. http://www.idealist.org/orgs/cmptr2.htm I'm living with 18 in-door-only cats (9 are mine the others are fosters). This list is wonderful. Although I don't currently have any FeLV+ animals, I've been printing protocols off for my vets, slowly introducing them to the idea that even symptomatic positive cats can be given more time with those of us who care enough to try some new ideas. It's working. Janet Ashman Iowa City, IA Very closely supervised by: Rose, Lily, Basil, Lucifer, Izzy, Lorenzo, Forrest, Freddie, Maus, and a number of simply charming fostercats. For my part, I've been writing a number of similar organizations recounting Jim's experiences and contributions and asking for help. It's not just the computer, it's the list maintenance costs and inability to do enhancements, the access costs, the hosting costs, etc. etc. etc. And wouldn't it be great if an educational institution came forth with some kind of stipend or scholarship, that's so important and really is the best answer. Perhaps I should post the names of the orgs I've been writing to. I'll need to do that from home, and will as soon as I have a moment. There are a lot of angels out there. -------------------------------------- Date sent: Thu, 19 Feb 1998 13:53:10 -0500 From: "albobo@worldnet.att.net" To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Jim Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi Everyone, Just wanted to let you know that today I have written to the makers of Interferon, ImmunoRegulin and Acemannan asking for their help in getting Jim a computer. I will let you know when and if I hear anything back from them. I also subscribed to a listserv (Blind-etc) and will see if there is any help there. Also wanted to thank all of you who have written letters to Jim's counselor and to TV stations and newspapers and the like. We know there's help out there, it's just a matter of finding it. Keep up the good work and together we'll win this one for Jim! > > Kathy G and the 3 Furries in Daytona Beach =^.^= - Rusty =^.^= - Smokey =^.^= - Money See us at: http://cgi.gambitsys.com/homey/webdoc5.htm The Cat: Mother Nature's Masterpiece! -------------------------------------- From: DLMLLM@aol.com Date sent: Thu, 19 Feb 1998 14:44:12 EST To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Drugs for Russian Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi Barb, Yes the vet seems to think Russian needs the rest at night to. We had a long talk with her this morning. Russian's blood is down to just below 16 from 18 on Monday. I talked to her about the Ambrotose. She cautions the use of herbs because if you use too much then it tends to work on the liver in a bad way. There is also no proven testing on a lot of these herb remidies, especially with cats. She has a point. Sometimes when you start to doctor say for a cold and you start to get better it could be just your body kicking in to cure it. I'm not sure on any of it yet. We are giving the Interferon daily and she is still on an antibiotic for infection. She is not positive the Interferon will do the trick. She says it depends on how much of a immune system is left for Russian to fight with. They took the blood test for count plus one to send off to see how her bone marrow is and to try to see what is happening to the red cells. A blood transfusion costs between $80 to $100. It would be worth a try. She thinks it might last her awhile. Maybe a month or two. The predisone would be in extreme small doses since the cat only weighs 7 lbs. It would just be enough to help the appitite and make her feel better. About 1 to 1 1/2 grams per day. She too wories about immune depression. She also has a cat with Russians problems. Let me know what you think. But they are being retested as soon as I can afford to pay the vet more. Russian has been using up the reserves so far. The vet visit today left her tired and her blood level dropped to 16 from 18 in three days. When I took it for near pneumonia last month it was horrible. I felt lite headed and sicker. I never finished the 10 day regime. And still felt the effects for a few days after. Will it di this to Russian on such a low dosage and once a day giving? And how long should I use it. The vet said we would be able to judge wether it seems to be helping her or not. She does not want to surpress her system. She also has a cat with leukemia. She says the red cells Russian has are not producting properly. Have you ever heard of a parasite that attaches to red blood cells. The body normally kills these off in healthy cats but in immune depressed the critters kill the red cells. If this is the case she would need antibotics to kill these to. They took blood for two different tests. He did take a few bites of food last night, but I was right when I thought it was just a tease. He has not eaten yet today. My Mom even made up some wonderful moist chicken for him and he turned his back on it. Any recommendations for force feeding? I thought if I did this for one or two days he just might start eating on his own again. Since the a/d is so mushy should I feed him that or something else. I have been giving him the kittie vitamin gel, but other than giving him the vitamins he needs it has not helped in kicking in his appetite. Force feeding suggestions, experiences??? Thanks in advance. - Cheryl DeSantis Bradmark, Inc. 4265 San Felipe Suite 800 Houston, TX 77027 800-621-2808 http://www.bradmark.com -------------------------------------- From: "James G. I justed sucked up the a/d into the syringe, then slowly fed it to the cat. I would insert in syringe into the opening at the back of their mouth. You might have to wrap him into a towel to hold him still. It is VERY messy. If the a/d is too thick to pull up in the syringe, then liquidify it a little with pedalyte. I used the large 3cc syringes. I've not found any other kind of food that pulls up into a de-needled syringe as easily as the a/d. This may be something you've already tried, but sometimes I'm able to get cats to eat sardines mushed up even if they won't eat anything else. Good luck! Hope this helps a little... - TK -------------------------------------- END OF PART 2: See Part 3 at: http://www.geocities.com/HotSprings/Spa/8025/9802193.txt
