To my knowledge, it was just a "quick fix" to get her over a himp. The next day, her rbc went up to 19, but by 2 days later, it had dropped back to 15 or 16. However, it may be enough to get Russian over whatever is bothering her for the moment. Pam -------------------------------------- Date sent: Wed, 18 Feb 1998 07:54:33 -0600 (CST) From: "Nancy A. Usually I notice a difference in a few hours and it lasts a couple of days even with just one dose. One vet prescribes 1/4 tablet and one a half tablet. I did notice once though that it made Panther very tired and it took a little longer to notice the appetite increasing. Prednisone may help also (if you have no reservations about using it for short-term). Hope you see some improvement soon. My cats really like tuna, liver, slightly cooked egg yolks, baked chicken, and Friskie's liver and chicken and their mariner mix or mixed grill when they're ill. Also the tiny cans of salmon and chicken hearts. Good luck and keep trying--I'm pulling for Copley. Won't be on here long today. It was my turn with Russian last night and after working till 1:30 am and then getting up with her I slept in longer then I should have after my husband took over. Our vet called yesturday and has started Russian on oral Interferon to answer your question Nancy. I gave it to her at 5 am. for her first dose. 7 days off 7 on and so on. When we took a look at her at 8 you could see just a little difference. She was laying down but looking around more. She will be sleeping more I know and I'm not sure what Interferon does, I think boost the immune system. The vet mentioned Predisone to pert her up and get her eating. I was on the stuff for 10 days for bronkitis. I don't think we'll use it unless they insist. I don't like it and I doubt Russian will. I wonder if Epogen would interact with the Interferon. They want to use a real low dose. Well will scan the e-mail quick. Will have more time to respond tomorrow while I'm off work. Linda Anthanks everyone. -------------------------------------- Date sent: Wed, 18 Feb 1998 13:50:15 -0500 To: felvtalk@MailingList.net From: "Michele R. Benny was very picky when he got sick but before that would eat just about any canned food and would head butt the other kitties out of their bowls so he could have theirs too. :) Anyway, the 9 Lives Shredded Turkey is what Benny ate when he was sick and Tuna Dinner (Special Kitty Wal-Mart brand) plus I think it was Whiskas Tuna & Egg ( it looked pretty reddish in color) anyway, I thought maybe your kitty would eat these since Benny liked them. Hopefully Chloe will like the same ones. Let me know! MIchele Smeal for Benny Michele R. Smeal mrb2@psu.edu 107 Ritenour Bldg. The tuna stuff works too on most cats, because it's SO smelly. Chloe will only eat fresh or defrosted fish (hoo boy, Barb, you wanna talk spoiled?) Until Doc Myers mentioned it, I did not realize it was the sense of smell at operation on appetite, I just knew from experience that cheap, smelly food works on kitties who won't eat. He was out in the dining room and looked at me like I was a nut case. He usually stays with me all night. I ordered some of that Ambrotose, should be here tomorrow. Hope it helps him like it has helped some of the others. But he just keeps on going like the energizer bunny. Now, the epogen will not interfer, nor interact with the interferon. With the interferon, try to get it under his tongue or on his tonsils where it will be absorbed. Once it hits the stomach, it is destroyed by the gastric secretions. Have you tried ImmunoRegulin?? I am a great believer in it. IT is the immune system booster. Interferon, well, it's in the name. We HOPE that it interfers with the virus when it tries to reproduce. I am not the best one to ask about Prednisone. I don't like steriods, but some people have had good luck with it when used in small doses for anemia, BUT it has to be used with great caution, esp with a cat recovering from surgery. It suppresses the immune system. I have ordered some of the Ambrotose (sp) and it will be here tomorrow, (they said) I will start it as soon as it gets here and let you know how and if it helps Merlin. Take care and please, let the housework go, let the dishes sit and get some rest. Without it, we can't taste our food. Now we humans, for the most part, will eat anyway. Animals, tho, maybe it's a self defense mechanism, don't like to eat what they can't smell. If they can't smell, they won't eat. I put normal saline drops in Merlins nose to keep it open so he could smell his food and that worked pretty good. Now I use the interferon to help keep his chronic URI at bay. Does the Vit C ascorbate come in strengths , i.e. 250mg, 500mg ? And did you drop the Wild Yam Extract for a reason ? I'm hesitant to try new things on Selena, (she's the kitten who had an out-of-body-experience after just 2 doses of DMG) but after reading your Chloe page, feel that this couldn't hurt. (famous last words) thanks, .marilyn -------------------------------------- From: "Steve Lackow" To: Subject: Re: Snake Oil Date: Wed, 18 Feb 1998 14:41:45 -0800 Reply-to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi Marilyn. I buy the Vitamin C in a big container at the health food store, get sodium ascorbate if at all possible, that's what cats absorb best. Been jusing 1tbp to about 4 or maybe 6 ounces of aloe vera juice. Getting the right C and the right aloe vera juice (not reconstiuted from gel, but whole leaf). As for Wild Yam Extract, it's a tincture (alcohol based) and we didn't like it, nor do i notice any difference with it gone. Wild Yam is all about DHEA, anyway. Keep Selena warm, and we'll be thinking of you. -------------------------------------- From: "Steve Lackow" To: Subject: Re: Pred Date sent: Wed, 18 Feb 1998 14:44:31 -0800 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Long term pred use is out for FeLV cats, period. Every time I here it now, I think of Vyvyan. Pred is immuno supressant and will end up a key cause of demise. However, one-shots and short term use can make all the difference, as was the case with my cat. -- Steve -------------------------------------- Date sent: Wed, 18 Feb 1998 18:47:02 -0500 From: Brad To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: appetitie Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi All. I am having the same problem with Beast. When I first got him 14 wks ago, there wasn't enough food to feed him (no tape worm either). Since he has gotten sick, he nibbles a few bites, walks over drinks some milk and waddles off. The supplements that I am putting in his food aren't doing him much good. I have even tried plain food without supplements. I do manage to get a few bites into him during our dinner. Besides that he isn't eating properly. I am very curious about this Body Builder. Please tell me more!!! But the news networks, CBS (ch 3), ABC (ch 6), NBC (ch 100 and the FOX networks, all do human interest stories. Here is a thought...that new show, The View with Barbara Walters? I love it. I will e mail them and see if they may have an interest. If everyone tries to e them, maybe they will do a story. Worth a try. Otherwise, contact networks in Jim's area. If we work together, we can move mountains...or at least a computer in Jim's direction.
