Thursday February 12, 1998 Part 2 10 Messages ====================================== From: WORKPARK@aol.com Date sent: Thu, 12 Feb 1998 17:14:40 EST To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: (Fwd) Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Please have Richard check with an oncologist concerning his cat. Our cat, in addition to being FeLV+, has a type of cancer that has not produced any tumors so far. The oncologist here suggested we try Alkeran 2 mg. tabs, 1/4 tab once daily for 10 days, then 1/4 tab every other day. She has told us that cats are more resistant to the side effects with this kind of chemo than humans, and has told us we shouldn't worry about them as much unless she reacts right away. She got her first dose this morning before 10, and it's now 3:15, and she seems just fine. The cost for 10 pills from Walgreens was only $25.59, and at the dose she's getting, will last quite awhile. I'll keep the list posted on her progress. She tested positive but has been asymptomatic for 6 years. I have noticed though for the past few months a limp in her rear leg. Also a deep cough now and then. this. I have been half afraid of taking her to the vet for the limp. She is on the immunoregulin, interferon, and the DMG. I will be watching for suggestions along with you. Are there any mailing lists for cancer in pets? Chemo doesn't seem to affect cats so adversely as humans- their physiology and metabolisms are quite different. Also, their thresholds of pain are much higher. So, don't dismiss the chemo completely. Since she has lymphosarcoma, the Immunoregulin will not work. Tests done at Texas A&M have shown that Acemannan injected directly into the sarcoma have stopped its growth (effectively killing it) making it easier to remove and stop spreading. This is an option that you should discuss at length with your vet. Acemannan can be obtained from the address on our FeLV project web page site- where you'll also find some of the studies done on it. I'll forward your post to a vet that monitors this list to get his opinions and post them back to the list. Take care, and let me know if there is more that I can do to help. Talk to you soon. Probably because cats have no preconceptions as to how the treatment is going to affect them. If it seems to be indicated, I would proceed with it. Oftentimes, just the addition of digestive enzymes to the regimen will significantly reduce the side effects. I would be happy to consult with your veterinarian on this if you like. Above all, you will need to maintain a postive mental attitude or your cat will pick up on your tone and manner and will not fare as well. M. W. They had placed the order by leaving a message at MWI on Saturday. When they had not received it from them by yesterday, they called to check. Somehow, the message never made it to them, so the order was placed yesterday again, and they were told it would take a week. I have again given my vet the info. to order it from Island Pharmacy Services to see if they can get it any faster, and they will check tomorrow to see. If it is faster, I'll post the info, so in the future we can make sure our vets order this from Island Pharmacy. Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi Pam, We had an older cat that was that way. He ruled the others. Even had one female who caught mice for him and gave them to him to eat. He was the 15 yr. old who was put to sleep before we moved. All the cats respected him. He became really bad off tho. It always surprised me how he could eat mice with hardly any teeth. Russian doing some better tonight to. She eats for my husband better. We are still giving her food from a syringe. She still is growling her disapproval at us to. Ambrotose is the nutritional food supplement equivalent of Acemannan. I started my 3 felv+ cats on the product on Monday, and already seeing an improvement in their physical appearance and activity level. There are annecdotal reports of cancers in pets actually liquifying, as well as lots of studies documenting its effectiveness. It's a pure derivative of the active ingredients in aloe vera. A woman contacted me some time ago offering to send me information and the anecdotal reports you mention, but she never did. Is there any way that you could send it to me, or point me in a direction to find that info? I'd really apreciate it. TIA. Talk to you soon.
