I'm sorry to hear she's not feeling better. I know how bad it can be when you have a cat with a bad tooth. I know that dairy isn't the best thing for them, but does she like cream cheese? That always works to get a pill in Rissa-tai if nothing else will. thinking of all the furbabies, Pam -------------------------------------- Date sent: Sun, 08 Feb 1998 09:23:01 -0500 From: Brad To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Michele and Benny Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net I to have had Michele and Benny on my mind. I must have checked my e mail 100 times yesterday hoping to hear something. I had the same thought that things may not be going so well...she knows we are there for her and I am sure when she can she will update us. Meanwhile, I have a concern re: my little one 'Beast'. He is FeLV+ and asymptomatic FIP. He is 20 wks old and weighs 6 lb. He weighed that before the FIP symptoms kicked in. My concern is that he is so bloated it hurts me to look at him. The vet tried to tap it yesterday but keep running into the lining and was unable to do any good. He eats and uses the litter and gets around pretty well. His sister is only 4 lbs and is very active despite her fluid filled belly. I think her activity is what is keeping her belly down. I am going to try to get him more active but if anyone has had any experience with this or has any suggestions, please let me know. Much appreciated! Not to nitpick... but "asymptomatic" means _without_ symptoms. I think you are using it to mean that you boy Beast is symptomatic, he has fluid in his belly. I just mention it because I got confused :) Jennifer Kleeman -------------------------------------- From: Newtanator@aol.com Date sent: Sun, 8 Feb 1998 19:38:05 EST To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Michele and Benny Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Linda, You may want to try a gel called Nutri-Cal. It is a high calorie, high protien gel in a tube. Merlin licks it right off my fingers. Surely your vet couldn't object to that. It kept him going when he was so bad. Oddly, he doesn't like it as much now that he is eating a little better. Maybe his body tells him he doesn't need it as much, I don't know. Now a give him a mixture of a high calorie powder, mixed with goats milk and a vitamin powder with antioxidents and such. I mix canned cat food or meat and vegetable baby food, (with any onions of any kind). It looks gastly, but he seems fairly happy with it. And he gets dry food also. He isn't gaining a lot of weight, but isn't loosing either. Holding his own. good luck, Barb -------------------------------------- From: "Lynn Stickels" To: "felvtalk" Subject: Fw: Michele and Benny Date sent: Sun, 8 Feb 1998 18:35:41 -0800 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Barb, What is the name of the vitamin powder with oxidants called that you use for Merlyn? Right now I am using Felovite 11 from the vet and added CoQ10 and Pau D'Arco.........all mixed up and given by dropper. I was interested in finding a vitamin supplement with the antioxidants...............Lynn -------------------------------------- Date sent: Sun, 08 Feb 1998 21:39:42 -0500 From: Brad To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Correction Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Jenn, Thanks! You are right. I get so muddled with all the terms and phrases. Sometimes my brain and fingers don't work together. But yes you are correct. My little boy 'Beast' is showing signs of the FIP (fluid build up in the abdomenal cavity). My girl 'Storm' has the fluid too, but not nearly as bad. I am so worried about 'Beast'. Again, if anyone knows or has had experience with FIP please let me know. I would love to be able to get that fluid down a bit so that he regains a little of his energy. Thank you again and please keep a look out for my miscommunications. I asked her one time but she never said so this might be why nobody has heard from her. We all need to keep good thoughts for them both and pray a lot. But we all know when it's their time, God will take them. I ususally hear from her in the morning so maybe everything is alright. Schmall" To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Correction Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Kelly, I haven't had experience with the wet form of FIP, but in November when I thought my Jake had it, I would have tried anything s. . .o I did a little bit of looking into the popular books out by alternative vets. In Richard Pitcairn's "Natural Health for Dogs and Cats," he writes of using the homeopathic remedy, Arsenicum album or white oxide of arsenic. This is from his book: "His symptoms included repeated vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetitie and swelling of the abdomen. Over several days my client and I gradually changed the cat's diet to a home-prepared one and increased his vitality through the use of vitamins and thymus gland supplements. I then recongized an appropriate homeopathic remedy (above). Don't let this alarm you. The amount of arsenic in a homepathic remedy is less that you'd find in the food you eat, when it appears as a trace mineral. So I ganve him on dose which was followed by a short aggravation of symptoms for a couple of days and then a continued improvement for a long period. Two months later the vomiting began to recur, and I gave one more dose. He quickly returned to normal health and has remained stable every since . . . He is calmer and his weight increased from 6 to 11 lbs." I have to admit I would be hesitant to try this without getting a homeopathic veterinan involved, but many of them will give you info over the phone (for a small fee). Another remedy Pitcarin suggests is mercurius sulphuricus 6C for the cat who has remendous difficulty with breathing. If you are interested, let me know and I can give you the dosage Pitcarin suggests. Also, in Anitra Frazier's "The New Natural Cat" book, she talks about her protocol for FIP which includes several various vitamins and the possibility of using Lasix (a diuretic) or parsley tea, a natural diuretic that contains many minerals lost. I wonder too if bioplasma (which is a product containing all tissue salts and is supposed to help the body' chemistry maintain a nd restore good health) wouldn't help a little. Also UC at Davis has a protocol that can possibly result in a temporary remission of FIP. My vet understood that it was only used on "lab cats" and she felt the treatment was worse than the disease--I probably would have looked further into it had Jake been diagnosed. If I come across anything else, I'll let you know. Sory this is so long . . . am thinking of you and Beast and wishing you well. Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi all, It's taken me a while, but I've finally added a search engine for the archives pages. However, I had to move the archives to another host site, so you might want to make a note of it. The archives (and search engine) are at: http://www.geocities.com/HotSprings/Spa/8025/ The search engine is a JAVA based script and applets, so your browser will need to support JAVA in order for it to work. Also, since the archive is growing larger, any searches may take a while to finish since it is a thorough searcher. I hope folks with different types of browsers (Netscape, MS-Internet Explorer, AOL, Mosaic, etc.) will let me know how it works for them. For those with slow computers and slow connections (like mine), this may not work so well. For those with newer computers on a backbone, this should work quite well. Take care, and enjoy the archives more fully :) Talk to y'all soon. In loving memory of Vyvyan: March 20, 1988 - August 15, 1997 James G.
