He sounds like he's struggling really hard. Like the rest of us, at what point do you decide to let him go? It sounds like there is a lot of love between the two of you, but he also needs to know that you're ok with him resting. Please, whatever you decide, know that he loves you and would stay with you forever if he could. -------------------------------------- From: WORKPARK@aol.com Date sent: Sat, 7 Feb 1998 06:14:02 EST To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: UQ vetpath feline ref ranges Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Thank you George (Pachy) for the info on the cbc test range pages. I am concerned about getting them "fixed". My vet is totally against it at this point. She feels they are on the edge with the FeLV and the FIP symptoms already showing. My question is this...Having these two diseases, invading their bodies, will they still mature sexually or does the diseases suppress it? I can't have them mating with the possibility of offsprings. One more question for the road...I asked my vet her feelings on vaccinating the already + kittens against these two diseases. She said that she was always taught against it. The Acemannan is already helping them produce antibodies against these. The vaccination might do more harm than good. The kittens are + FeLV (no symptoms) and asymptomatic for FIP (fluid in the abdomen). They are getting 1 1/2 cc of Acemannan a week. I am also pumping them full of the recommended supplements and vitamins. Thanks once again for all your advice!!! Are these males or females? They will mature sexually so you will have to figure how best to deal with this. Vaccinating for FIP would do no good. FeLV vaccination is rather a matter of personal preference and experience. One thing I do go by - "If it ain't broke, don't fix it (unless you are a consultant)." If they are doing well, keep doing what you are doing. M. W. Myers, D.V.M. -------------------------------------- Date sent: Sat, 7 Feb 1998 12:49:02 -0600 (CST) From: "Nancy A. IF your male cat is well and not showing any symptoms, I think I might consider neutering him. It is done very fast in males, and he could come home the same day. Being put under for surgery of any kind is stressful however and you will have to seriously consider that. For the females it is major, invasive surgery and takes longer, so they are under longer. THen they stay overnight, (at least mine do) must have stitches removed etc. That is not necessary in the males. I have not had Merlin done, but he has been VERY ill and has still not totally recovered, if he ever really will. He shows no interests in the girls, so I don't think it is going to be a problem with him. I don't really know, but these diseases, the female may not even have a season. All her bodies energies are going to fight the illness. But is she does, and the boy is fixed, all you will have to do is put up with her yowling! Good luck. They all matured sexually; the mother cat went into heat when the kittens were 8 weeks, the little guys were trying to mount the little girls at 5 months! I talked to my vet who recommended doing all the surgeries as soon as possible since all the kittens were asymptomatic at the time. We did use prophylactic antibiotics for at least a week on each. There were problems with 2 of them, but related to stitch removal, not the FELV (they wanted the stitches OUT NOW and proceeded to remove them the first day home so had to be sewed up again! One even spent a few days "in solitary" in a wire cage with an elizabethan collar on because she wouldn't stop picking at the stitches). But the surgeries caused no FELV related problems. I'm glad I had it done, I'm a believer in keeping them 'babies' instead of letting them grow up. (I've also spent some time working with a rescue organization and get fanatical about spaying and neutering!) Maybe Michele needs to think on her own right now. Russian still not eating good. Stepping up frequency of feedings. Think that tooth is the culprit. Wish she'd get stronger so they could pull it. Trying to get doctor to precscribe something to pick up her appitite. Girl at work gives her two cats herbs she buys, says it helps to clean their system. Doctor won't let me do that either. Makes me so mad to run up against brick walls. Keep in touch. This must be so hard for her. I was hoping that perhaps she had been E mailing some of you privately but if Barb wasn't one of them then I was wrong. This is obviously one of those times when you can't just reach out & touch someone. Hopefully she has great family/friend support there close by. Dana -------------------------------------- END
