Tuesday February 3, 1998 Part 3 10 Messages ====================================== Date sent: Tue, 03 Feb 1998 19:52:41 -0500 From: Brad To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Acemannan Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Barb and Jenn, My two little ones just started their treatments last week of Acemannan. They get 1 1/2 cc of Acemannan in the abdomen. For now it is once a week for at least 8 weeks then once every two weeks then down to once a month, etc. Clincher with my two is that they are asymtomatic for FIP (fluid in the abdomen). The Acemannan shots don't seem to hurt them much considering the fluid build up. It is going to be hard to tell what is the FIP and what (if any) symptoms are the FeLV. My vet said that as ling as they are eating and using the litter and getting aroung fairly well, we are on a wait and see policy. But I am going to continue their treatments and vitamins/supplements as long as they are with me. Any ?'s...just e me. Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Michele, Good news about Benny. I know what you mean. Merlin ducks when he sees me coming "armed and dangerous" to. But he always seems to forgive me within a few minutes. barb -------------------------------------- From: Newtanator@aol.com Date sent: Tue, 3 Feb 1998 20:30:47 EST To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Immunity/Titre/Vaccination Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net George, I can only relate to you what I know about titre's in human use, which is prob not what you want, but maybe it will help a little. (I'm an RN, not an MD) When a Dr. suspects you have something like, chicken pox, but you have a mild case that maybe does not have symptoms that jump out at you, or they want to see if you need a booster for a vaccination, they will run a titre. Now if they are trying to diagnose something, like Chicken pox, they will get one level at the time of the suspected disease, then about 10 days after symptoms subside, they will run another. If your level has dropped significantly, then they now know you definately had the disease. It seems a " who cares now, I'm well" kind of situation, but if the titre stays the same, then they know they must look else where, that whatever you had may well come back. As to using titres, as least as I know them, in chronic diseases like FIP, FeLV or FIV, I really see no point. Oh it may well go up before you even know the cat has the disease and start to drop as the cat looses the battle, returning to subnormal levels. Have they set a "norm" for a titre for FIP? I have no idea. I would imagine that to have a level at all, would mean the disease it there. If the body is kicking out specific antibodies for that disease, it must be there or the immune system would not be doing it. Will a vaccine make the titre level go up? Yes, it will for a month or two, but then as the immune system realizes there is no threat, the level will drop to almost nothing, having committed to proper antibody pattern to memory for future use. Anyway, this all probaby sounds simplistic and I am as agrivated as you that it seems only money gets research going, but that is a fact of life. It is surprising tho, considering what we spend on our pets each year. Billions. Our best hope, at least for FIV and FeLV is the reseach being on AIDS patients. A lot of what we have now is from that. barb -------------------------------------- From: Newtanator@aol.com Date sent: Tue, 3 Feb 1998 20:36:56 EST To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Amoxycillan dangers???and Russian Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Linda, Don't give up. Merlin was totally paralysed for nearly two weeks. My vet was sure he would die, and to be honest, so did I. But it turned out to be a bad inner ear infection! THis is not to say the felv is not making everything a thousand times worse than it would have been, but he is still here, walking, purring and eating half my supper while turning up his little nose at the expensive stuff I just got for him. I'm eating tv dinners because all my money goes to stuff for him and he want's that to!! Little snot. hang in there, thinking of you and all the others with sick ones. He is about right, but he just can't tolerate food like friskies or purina. Throws them right up. The Iams, he does ok with and canned, which he loves of course. So with 17 cats, yes 17, I just buy the Iams in very large bags! You can see some of my babies at my site. http://members.com/newtanator/multicat.html barb -------------------------------------- From: Newtanator@aol.com Date sent: Tue, 3 Feb 1998 20:44:54 EST To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: ReBarb from Linda Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Linda, I'm about 6 miles from the Ohio line. Worked at a hospital in Toledo for 13 years, (St Vincents) maybe we should "do" lunch sometime! Saw Russian today. Maybe I expected too much, got a huge letdown. She did get up to move closer to me, they kept her in the cage. I guess she would be like my old Russian. They took fluid from her lung today to check it. I keep thinking we waited too long over the weekend to get her somewhere. If I hadn't relied on the old vets word. But that is hindsight. She is very weak and the fever is at 103. She would only drink can milk, they are force feeding her to. I think I need to talk to the new vet tomorrow and really talk to her. If she will get better and her quality of life improve or stay weak ? How do your cats do when they get this far down? She has been bad before, but never this bad. It is so hard to see this happening. She did purr alot and fell asleep on my hand. Well have other notes and haven't even finished my E-Mail. Just got off work.
