My vet says the next day should be fine, as the virus can't survive very long outside its host, but suggested a new litter box "just in case". Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi Liz and everyone, I'm so sorry to hear that your precious baby has taken such a turn :( Cats are quite stubborn creatures, so you may not want to dismiss the Acemannan treatments for lack of time. Jenn's suggestions are also good ones for keeping your cat comfortable. This is one of the very *rare* occasions where I, too, would recommend adding prednisone to help your cat feel better. However, I'd like to make one possible correction to what Jenn said: Jenn wrote: > We then put him on prednisone (steroid). Steroids > have been known to reduce the tumors or keep them the same size. > Unfortunately, Felv and steroids don't mix too well. The steroids can > bring on anemia. It is my understanding that prednisone (and other such cortisones) aid in slowing the anemia- at least it did for my Vyvyan before he died. Prednisone is also a good option if you feel reasonably sure that your cat doesn't have much time- ordinarilly, prednisone (an immunosuppressor) would allow opportunistic secondary infections to set in is why the red flags come up when cats first show signs of FeLV-related illness. Of course, I could be wrong about this, but that is my understanding of how and why prednisone has been given to FeLV+ sympotatic cats. Just my two cents. After Vyvyan died, I was completely crushed- he was everything to me. However, I couldn't stand the idea of coming home to an empty apartment every day, so I went to the local "Adopt-A-Pet" and Moxy let me know that she was coming home with me the minute I walked in the door. That was a week after Vyvyan passed away. I bought Moxy new food and water dishes and a new litter box, and I cleaned the apartment top to bottom (including steam-cleaning the carpets and furniture). I also washed down everything possible with bleach water just to be sure. This was perhaps a bit overboard, but I wasn't about to take any chances (especially living in an area where the local vet refuses to properly treat FeLV+ cats). I guess my point is: if you've taken a few simple precautions, your new kitten should be perfectly safe. As others have told you, FeLV is extremely fragile outside of the host body and doesn't live much more than a few hours. However, a little bleach and some steam cleaning will ensure that this nasty virus has no chance to infect another life. Best wishes, and I hope you'll let another little life touch yours and be touched by your love. In loving memory of Vyvyan: March 20, 1988 - August 15, 1997 James G. If she is really going downhill severely you may need to make that really difficult decision for euthanasia. It is very difficult, but may be the kindest move you can make. M. W. Could you use some of these for the little ones? They can just be thrown into a washer and dryer. Let me know. I will be glad to make some. I volunteer at a no kill facility and have found a small blankie makes each little one feel a bit better. Send me your address. I'd like to make a monthly donation to help with your facility. I clean cages and cuddle kitties and do laundry at the facility here. I have heard of it directly into tumors or the abd, but not the chest. There is no doubt this drug has great possiblities, but there are not going to be to many vet willing to use it unless it gets a lot less complicated I think. My vet will do pretty much what ever I ask of him, but I think even he would balk at that. I weighed him a few days ago and his weight is holding a 5 lbs, which is pretty sad for a 9 month old, but he is a small cat and doesn't appear skinny. He only lost one pound thru all his illness. He is walking a little better. He has learned to take things slowly and thus doesn't tip over to often. He can now go from chair, to footstool, to floor without falling. I still get some gunk from his ears, but not as much and they don't seem to hurt him any more. The eye is unchanged, no better, no worse. I don't keep him in the playpen anymore and he sleeps on the bed with me like he used to and was VERY happy about that. Improvement will be slow, but I don't mind as long as it keeps coming. footnote: I think I told some of you about an orange Tom that I feed on my back porch that had gotten an eye injury. I tried to catch him to get him to a vet, but he got away. He is very big and very fast. Since my failed attempt, he wouldn't come up close enough for me to see how the eye was doing, but tonight he came right up and tho he wouldn't let me touch him, I could see that he got lucky and his eye is ok. He seems none the worse for wear. we win a few! barb -------------------------------------- From: "phaedrus" To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Date sent: Fri, 30 Jan 1998 19:29:46 +0000 Subject: More changes to the FeLV project page Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hello everyone, I just wanted to let everyone know that I've made a few cosmetic changes to the FeLV project web page. I've placed each protocol with the listing for each treatment available instead of having one big list of protocols at the end- Rena, can you provide us with a protocol for Baypamun? Also, I've placed the web counter at the top of the page to more accurately reflect the number of visitors to the page. And, last but not least, I've added another award that we've won to the page. Does anyone here have any suggestions on how to make this page more accessible and readable? Being legally blind, I've created it so that it is readable to me- but it may not be so readable to others. You can send your comments to me privately if you'd rather. Well, take care, and best wishes to all. In loving memory of Vyvyan: March 20, 1988 - August 15, 1997 James G. Barb asked about the Acemannan. My two 19 wk old kittens 'Storm" (f) 4 lbs and 'Beast' (m) 6 lbs started their treatments this evening. My vet is using 1 and 1/2 cc of the Acemannan and injecting it into their stomachs. She is going with one injection each week for 8 weeks then to every other week, then once a month then she says we will see how they do. Please understand one thing...My two, just this past week, started showing signs of the FIP virus. They have the wet version...fluid build up in their abdomen. 'Storm' is doing great though. She is eating and using the litter and getting around pretty good. 'Beast' just "came down" with it yesterday. He is still groggy from the fever he just got. 'Storm' has gotten used to her 104 degree fever. I am keeping a watchful eye on 'Beast'. They both use to be very active kittens. Now they just lull around here. But are very lovable. My point to all this is, I can't be sure how well the acemannan will work considering they have FIP. My vet is Dr. Jody Hoffman at the Conchester Animal Hospital in Boothwyn, PA. The number there is 610-485-6007. They have had great success with the Acemannan. I am sure if you need more info she would be glad to speak with you. She is a wonderfully caring person. My 'kids' are blessed to have her. Til next time... Kelly -------------------------------------- END
