I have not yet talked to my vet re Interferon. It seems that there is so much info here that I will be taking to her but I figured I'd hold tight for the week or so & get abunch together before I go. Glad to hear Selina's doing well. I know that we can all wish all our FelV the same. The fight goes on! Take care, Dana (Sookey,Charlie,&Spitzie) To MICHELLE, Keep your head up!! Many of us have done the same. I have taken in 3 wild kittens & they are all positive. I can only hope & pray that my other 2 vaccinated cats are clear but as my vet says: they are really at no greater risk than being outside in the wild. Apparently somewhere between 25-40% of wild cats carry the virus. I do not let my own cats near the kittens or use the same feed bowls or litter boxes. I also have not botheresd to test them because at this point it doesn't matter. If they do come down with the disease, I will never know where they actually picked it up. It is an awful disease but many cats can live long & relatively healthy lives in spite of it. Would I take in a stray again? You bet I would cause those little babies would be dead by now for sure & maybe I can help someone else by my experiences as can you! Good luck & keep in touch!! Dana PS. Here in Canada it seems that our cat shelters or SPCA do not test for this disease so who knows how many people adopt + cats & let them spread this disease to otherwise healthy cats. The Vaccination is only about 85% effective against contracting from + cats. This is a whole other issue! -------------------------------------- From: PUFFERINO Date sent: Thu, 29 Jan 1998 07:07:48 EST To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Need home for FIV CAT Organization: AOL (http://www.aol.com) Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi, I live in the New York City area. Please say a big prayer that my little Benny makes it through. I have read some pretty positive things that I was hoping to see yesterday and it made me feel a lot better, but then I go home and kick myself over and over for what is happening to my innocent baby..but he is doing well. His little mouth has the sores through it and I knw it hurts him to swallow. I realized this am he didn't like the certain flavor of food so I switched it. He usually eats any canned food right up. That might be how he got this, he wanted to finish pt he strays food once or twice when he did it. God love him, he didn't know and neither did I. He is going to a new vet tomorow, please wish us the best of luck that the outcome for Benny will be good! Thanks so much, I really need you folks!!!!!!!!! Benny seems to be pretty good on the Interferon, I am taking him for a second opinion tomorrow and pray they give me some kind of positive news or positive news for teatment. Please say a prayer for him. What I would like to know is if anyone out there can tell me what else besides soft canned food I can be doing? Any vitamins? Help!!! Thanks so much!!! Michele -------------------------------------- From: "Claude Horstmann" To: Subject: Benny Date sent: Thu, 29 Jan 1998 11:41:53 -0500 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Dear Michele, Guilt ? The "gift" that keeps on giving ! You obviously have a very full plate, and my heart goes out to you. My only advice to you is to TIE A KNOT AND HANG ON, you are about to be swept into the www of cat-lovers who are pushing the envelope in the war against FeLV. And each battle is different, and each kitten presents with its own set of symptoms. I have no experience with mouth sores, Selena was born with this dis-ease, and nearly died when she was 10 weeks old, I had adopted her a month earlier from an abandoned barn- and was shattered when I was told the diagnosis, and prognosis. However, Interferon was relatively new in 1996 and my Vet agreed to let me try it. The next few weeks were a white knuckle ride for Selena and myself.. I would NOT let her die of malnutrition, and so the food crisis was a daily struggle to feed her with whatever means were at hand (in her case, a syringe without the needle) Pureed baby food turkey, lamb, liver.. pedialyte..yoghurt.. and you may in light of Benny's mouth sores, have to maintain a feeding protocol. The Dr who visits this site may have information helpful to you re:mouth sores. Good luck at the Vet tomorrow ! I'll keep in touch. marilyn -------------------------------------- Date sent: Thu, 29 Jan 1998 10:09:56 -0500 To: felvtalk@MailingList.net From: "Michele R. I have been giving Benny LOTS of TLC and he knows I love him more than anything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am praying and hope all you people who are writing me will pray that my litle guy will fight this. Benny is a little siamese mix and what a personality. He is mama's boy. Going through a rough time with my husband realizing "this marriage is never going to work" is not helping either. My stomach is one big knot. I have been slacking on eating and sleeping due to the guilty feelings but I am being strong for Benny and will continue to take everyone's advice on FE LV Talk and we'll make it. Thank YOU Marilyn !!!!! Michele & Benny in Pennsylvania Please let me know since Benny is on Interferon and has the sx (mouth sores) Is there anything to make his mouth better or vitamins he can take to help? Feel free to forward this to a vet, that's fine. If you know that they are Felv+, you can get them on some Immunoregulin or other forms of meds that can help them out. Cats seem to love that stuff. jenn -- Jennifer Crocus mailto:jcrocus@chubb.com The Chubb Corporation http://www.chubb.com/ -------------------------------------- From: "Lynn Stickels" To: "felvtalk" Subject: Oxifresh pet deodorizer? My kitties are going in next week for these. Bailey we know is + ,so I don't get him vaccinated (was told this would do more harm then good). Two other of my kitties where tested 6 yrs. ago when this disease raged through our home and took 3 of our 5 babies within 15 months. Of the 2 that made it, one tested + then tunrned negative, has been negative ever since (6 yrs.), the other never tested +. My dilemma : do I test the ones that were negative as of last year before I get them vaccinated? I have been told that the vaccine can do more harm good if they are +. PS. Dr. Myers I must have miss your response concerning Joey, he is the one diagnosed with mild cardiomyapathy. When he was re-evaluated a year later he was seen by a cardioligist and given an echo-cardiogram. This was when my vet. said that she wondered if he had ever really had a problem (his original numbers were barely above normal too.) I've read that the disease starts to cause problems in 2 to 3 yrs., this would be about now. Belinda Happiness is being owned by cats... I know you'll all be fine and thanks for the advice. I just got back from my lunch hr. and bought Benny different flavors of kitty food even though befre he was not a picky canned food eater. This morning, he wouldn't eat chicken flavor, only turkey. So, I bought him some vitamins that I HOPE he will eat if mixed in his food because I know his little body is going through a lot of changes and he's stressed. I work 8 hrs. a day, but am there te rest of the time with him and will be as long as he needs his mama. He is my boy. I wish the sores could be relieved, can anyone give any tips? His breath is bad now, real bad. Tomorrow (1-30) he will get a second opinion from a god vet clionic not the one who doesn't seem to care (who dx him) and hopefully there will be some positive news for the future that will help my baby. I WILL NOT GIVE UP. Thanks everyone!!! Dr. Myers I didn't have much of a chance to find out, as my cat literally went 180 degrees in a minute. I believe that vitamins would work wonders. I've had 3 cats with Felv, and it seems that the anemia was the main killer. The vet put her on CLavomox liquid and I gave her the CoEnzyme Q10 which is supposed to be helpful with the mouth sores. So far Sookey has relatively normal gums only very slightly inflamed at times. I can totally relate to your overwhelming feelings right now as I have been there!! So have many others too!! You almost become obsessed with finding out more & then get confused becaouse there are no totally clear answers; only a lot of us trying to find what works besst for our situations. I can honestly say since hooking up to this list, I feel there is a lot more hope(Certainly support) than I could get on my own. You've come to the right place!! Good luck & love to Benny!
