I've been lurking for a while now and thought that it was time to introduce myself and my situation. I'm currently on the board of directors for my local humane society. I do not have an FeLV+ cat. Another member of the board does have an FeLV+ cat. The cat was misdiagnosed by the shelter (long story). Tonya, my friend, decided to keep the FeLV+ cat. Tonya has 9 other cats, all have tested neg for FeLV. I pass information on to her that I gain from this mailing list because she doesn't have email capabilities. I have to admit, both of us have learned lots from this mailing list. My selfish reason for joining this mailing list is two fold. I have 3 cats that have herpes (I own 12 and have 5 fosters right now) and am always searching for ways to boost their immune system to limit the number of outbreaks. The second reason is because I do lots of fostering for the humane society and know that one day it could be finding out that the shelter made a mistake and I now have an FeLV+ kitty. -- TK -------------------------------------- From: Newtanator Date sent: Tue, 27 Jan 1998 17:18:30 EST To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Zithromax and Merlin Organization: AOL (http://www.aol.com) Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Lynn, The Zithromax seems to be working pretty good. I just weighed Merlin and held my breath because I thought he had lost weight. (I bring home a digital scale from work) But he is holding at 5 lbs. He is walking better, more alert and watching all the goings on. It's my understanding that his ear problems take a while to clear up, so progress will be slow. The instructions I got from an Md that specializes in Pharmacology, a cat breeder and judge are as follows: Use the pediatric suspension, it reconstitutes out to 200mg/5ml. Adult cats get 1ml a day for three days, then if the problem is chronic, you can give weekly for months if necessary. If the cat is under 4 kg. (roughly 9lbs) it should get one half cc. I was concerned about the stuff going bad. The box says only good for 14 days. But it is not refridgerated. He said to put it in the fridge and it keeps for up to 3 months. He has used it and it remains potent and safe IF it is kept cold. Hope this helps. Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net This is such a great link. I have been overwhelmed with the amount of info floating around out there not to mention the great support for those who loose their cat to this disease. I am in Canada & have not yet looked to any "medication" other than Echinacea & Vit C for my 3 8 mos. old positive kitties. They are very healthy & large with great appetites. Can someone suggest somewhere to begin keeping in mind I have 3 to treat & drug availability here? I have heard of a treatment(i am leary to say CURE) with using 5 Drops Vit B12 1 dropperful(?) Amoxycillan & 1 Pau Darco capsule per day. Apparently a lady with a fe luke positive cat tried this protocol & her cat (3 years positive) became healthy & NEGATIVE!!!! I am unable to get Pau Darco(sp?) here in Canada unless in tea form & would appreciate it greatly if someone on the West coast of USA could send me up some to try. Of course I would be more than happy to pay the total cost. I would like to try this method since my babies appear so healthy now. I would also be interested to know if any one else has experiences with this method or any concerns with regards to the long term use of amoxycillan. Sorry to be so long winded but I am overwhelmed & certainly optomistic at this point. Date sent: Wed, 28 Jan 1998 02:07:45 +0100 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Posted for Kelly bkfair@bellatlantic.net Hi! I have 2 19 wk old kittens (litter mates). Both tested positive for FeLV. The girl is already showing symtoms...bulging stomach, tireness. She eats normally, even feasting on table scraps (pasta, beans, shrimp, meat). She jumps on to the bed, couch, radiators, etc. without trouble. She is skinny as a rail though, even before the symtoms started. Her litter habits are normal. I lost all hope last week when they were diagnosed. Reading your web page has given me tremendous hope. I am referring your web site to my vet. I pray that it will help. Do you have any suggestions as to what I can do to help with boosting their immune systems now while I am waiting for the vet to decide treatment? Thank you for your time...Kelly -------------------------------------- From: "Claude Horstmann" To: Subject: Vetri-Cine DMG Date sent: Tue, 27 Jan 1998 20:37:35 -0500 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Anybody wanting to follow up with this: Vetri-Science Laboratories has a website on the www. Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Go to your local health food store and get DMG tablets. They generally come in 100mg size. Give each kitten one daily and work with your vet on this. There are alternatives to prolong and enhance their lives, you just have to keep working at it. There will be disappointments, but hang in there. M. W.
