Organization: AOL (http://www.aol.com) Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Nancy, We humans usually pay in the end when we persist in our endeavors to wipe out or move animals away from where they belong. In Europe, they tried to wipe out cats and paid for it with a plague when overrun with disease carrying fleas on mice and rats. Snakes eat pests and usually bother no one. I'm lucky here where I live in Michigan. We have no real indigenous poisonous snakes. Rarely, one will show up and cause a stir. Even the Praying Mantis, ugly as it is, (I have to admit, I don't like bugs) seems to spend it's entire life hungry and eating even uglier little bugs. I have to admit tho, I have yet to figure out the purpose of the flea in the grand scheme of things. As to Merlins' ears, I have been hesitant to put to much in them. They had so much junk, my vet couldn't visualize his eardrums. Now I know he can hear, but whether he can hear with both, I don't know. I had a ruptured eardrum once and I could still hear out of the good ear of course. The drum healed over and I have no real problems from it. I will tell you, I've had two kids and knee surgery and I would have to give long thought to whether I would have that pain or that ear pain, if given the choice. The only good things was, the instant the drum broke, the pain stopped. I can't imagine the pain Merlin must have had with those ears. But he is doing better. He doesn't tip over as much when walking. He walks in a fairly straight line, but VERY SLOWLY. He will now crunch dry food, which he wouldn't do before and I am glad to see that. I feel he gets more rounded nutruition with the Iams than the canned or cooked chicken he was eating. He still loves his tuna tho. Well, that's about it. take care Barb -------------------------------------- From: Newtanator Date sent: Sat, 24 Jan 1998 12:57:10 EST To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Diethylcarbamazine citrate Organization: AOL (http://www.aol.com) Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Jim, Didn't know that was a heartworm med. One of the girls at work, her cat had heartworm and was told by her vet the treatment used for dogs will kill cats, so there is no treatment for them. You have to treat the symptoms as they come up. Her cat was very lucky, as cats have the ability to kill the heartworm, if they survive the symptoms. Since this cats mom is a nurse, she had all the emergency meds at home for instant use. Mostly they have very severe asthma like attacks that must be treated right now. It's going on two years now, and after getting her cat thru several bad attacks, it's heart murmur is gone and has been free of any problems for several months now. Anyway, its sad to have found something then find out it's been pulled as fast as it hit. Something untoward must have happened. Drug companies don't give up on something that fast unless something very bad happened with it's use. Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Barb, I know what you mean about some people treating cats so badly--I hate ANY mistreatment of animals, even snakes. I know a lot of folks think I'm crazy, but I will rescue anything including snakes (VERY carefully of course, using a net). I am fortunate where I live--all my neighbors (within at least a half mile of me) are very kindly people and will take in many strays). How good of you to try and and heal injuries even in wild cats--having had first-hand experience with wild ones, I know how difficult that can be. One of my original cats, Angel, was wild, and at his best (after he got somewhat tame with me) he would approach me when I was in a prone position, but when I stood up, he'd run for cover . . . he just couldn't associate both positions with me. I just thought of something--have you tried using warm olive oil on Merlin's ears? It might help break up the gunk. If it helps cats with felv, it prob would help AIDS patients, and there IS money there. barb -------------------------------------- From: Newtanator@aol.com Date sent: Sat, 24 Jan 1998 19:03:48 EST To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Merlin update Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Belinda, Side note, my very first Standard Poodle was named Belinda, she was very dear to me and the smartest dogs I ever owned. Lost her at only 8 years to kidney failure. Her breeder, a VERY famous one in Standard Poodle circles, believed in inbreeding, I mean REALLY inbreeding, brother to sister, mother to son. Not just once and while, but all the time. Her littersister died before a year of the same thing. Something the breeder failed to every tell me. I could have been on the alert for it. But that was many years ago. Merlin is purring up a storm and even gave me a head butt today. He is truly a magic man. Totally paralyzed three weeks ago, now in my lap again while on the computer. I never would have, in my wildest dreams ever thought he would be able to do that again, or even still be alive after the way he looked. Whether I have him for a week or years, he is my special little baby. barb -------------------------------------- Date sent: Sat, 24 Jan 1998 19:40:22 -0600 (CST) From: "Nancy A.
