Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Barb, So glad Merlin is doing better! What you said about the cold traveling up to the ears really makes sense, considering his inability to walk and now his unsteady gait. It looks like if you can get to the bottom of this, perhaps his walk will return to normal. You are a very persistent person and certainly one to be emulated! I took my "Little Bit" to the vet the other day--she was hiding, not eating, and staying in the house constantly--FELV negative. Her normal routine is outside, disappearing for days on end--always been this way since I found her--very independent, not associating with the other cats at all--not even wanting to eat out of the same food and water bowls (which we believe might "save" her in the end). Anyways, I was afraid she had gotten it, but it turned out to be a urinary tract infection--thank heavens! She's much better and now has taken off for the woods again. When this group is "gone" (God forbid), my husband and I will adopt 2 kittens and keep them in the house forever. I acquired all my cats through collecting strays, and upon adoption, they were impossible to keep in my small trailer (there were 13 at one time). I believe their outside experiences, especially because of where I lived (literally hundreds of strays), led to so many being FELV+. Now at least I live on 11 acres, with boundaries of a total of approximately 100 acres before any other houses with cats. I didn't mean to go on . . . I'm just so relieved about Little Bit--I don't know HOW I'd keep her housebound and medicated--she's still quite wild. Even giving her the antibiotic has been a challenge! In closing, Barb, very happy about Merlin! What remedies are prescribed depends on the individual symptoms, what works for one may not work for another. That's why I need to know discharge color, ALL the symptoms, cats state of mind, how they are feeling,do they have fever. Do you ever take temperatures yourself? Relatively easy do do......rectal therm. with some Ky Jelly on the tip. Normal cat temperature is 101 degrees. How is Stinker doing today? My Tigger (FIV+) is still walking wobbly....his URI went into his ears and I've been giving Baytril injections for 13 days now. Poor guy is getting tired of the shots, but he couldn't walk when it first happened, cause he was so dissy. Two quick questions. What is your recommended protocol for interferon? Also, what is your opinion on how long to wait after losing an FeLV cat before introducing another cat to the environment? -- Steve -------------------------------------- From: Newtanator Date sent: Fri, 23 Jan 1998 19:10:12 EST To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: last of tests results-sinus infection Organization: AOL (http://www.aol.com) Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Dr. Myers, Again welcome to our friendly little group. About the interferon nasally. I got that instruction from my vet via another vet in a neighboring town who specializes in Veterinary Oncology. If you would like to have her phone number or fax, I would be happy to send it to you privately. If you are interested in Merlin's saga, I will send that privately also. The group, for the most part has been through it with me for the last month and would just take up space for them. But I assure you, he is a very interesting little cat who has my vet of 20+ years just shaking his head in amazement. Have you ever used an antibiotic called Zithromax?(azithromycin). That is what I have him on now for and inner/middle ear infection. I would say it is probably his last hope to get rid of it, but I have reports from people they have had great success with it. I've used both, but now always use Gentocin Durafilm nasally when the cats get URI and they get congested, as well as with any chronic runny-nose kitties. It helps dry up the sinus walls. It's not 100% cure, but it does help when they're sneezing and congested. Organization: AOL (http://www.aol.com) Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Nancy, Thanks for the words on Merlin. He is sleeping now after his supper, but it is almost ear checking time. Big chunks of god-knows-what have been working their way out where I can safely reach them. Needless to say, he doesn't like it much. I would be a nervous wreck if my cats were outside. I have brought in four that I called "porch or shed" dwellers. All females except one, Mozart, who was under a year. Well, he glued his nose to my door so I let him in. I do have some wild toms I put food out for, but can't get near them. There is one orange tom that would sniff my fingers but that was it. He came up the other night and his left eye had been injured. I wanted to get him so I could take him to the vet, but he got out of the carrier before I could get it locked. He is big and STRONG. Now he doesn't trust me again. I hope his eye will be ok. I have seen this same injury on two other toms in the neighborhood and I suspect some evil brat with a bb gun. Both the others are incrediably wild and I could not even live trap them. They were to smart to trip the thing but always got the food. Both of them lost an eye as well. I don't understand why people are so cruel to cats. Makes me so angry some times! That's why I would freak out if any of mine got out. take care, barb -------------------------------------- From: "phaedrus" To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Date sent: Fri, 23 Jan 1998 20:35:25 +0000 Subject: Re: last of tests results-sinus infection Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net ------- Forwarded Message Follows ------- Date: Fri, 23 Jan 1998 21:11:02 -0500 From: "Carlene C. In my experience, interferon has been given orallyand is probably being absorbed through the mucous membranes, so it shouln't make much difference to give it orally or nasally. M. W. I've copied the important part of the citation below along with the URL. Any thoughts on this? ----------------------------Article Citation------------------------------- From: http://gopher.hivnet.org:70/0/magazines/atn/atn035 Diethylcarbamazine citrate. A study at the Harvard School of Public Health showed some success with this drug in treating feline leukemia in cats. The researcher suggested that these results "may have implications" for the treatment of AIDS and ARC. This poster session, presented on the first day of the Conference, would have attracted more attention if scheduled later. For a major talk on the second day of the Conference focused almost entirely on feline leukemia ("Vaccination Against Retroviruses, W.F.H. Jarrett, University of Glasgow, Glasgow, Scotland, available on audiotape from InfoMedix, Garden Grove, CA., 714-530-3454 tape number T205-T6). This talk pointed out that the disease in cats is very similar to AIDS; what it causes is not really leukemia but rather an immune suppression. This is a heartworm medication. I also did some research as well per usual, and found that it works through the lymph and blood systems, hence the idea to link it to immunology. I also found this FDA citation: The sponsors requested withdrawal of approval of the NADA's under 21 CFR 514.115(d) because the products are no longer being marketed. 006-462 07/15/1996 Diethylcarbamazine Citrate Bayer Corp., Agriculture Division, safety or effectiveness reasons unknown. More interesting yet, I also found this one: 012-444 12/22/1995 Prednisolone Acetate Akorn, Inc. safety or effectiveness reasons unknown. Want more info? There's a contact at FDA. Mohammad I. Sharar at the Center for Veterinary Medicine (HFV-216), Food and Drug Administration, 7500 Standish Pl., Rockville, MD 20855, 301-594-1722. I'll bet Mo can tell us all lots of interesting stuff. Like why Diethylcarbamazine Citrate and Prednisolone Acetate were "withdrawn" and "no longer marketed".. Enjoy the weekend, Steve -------------------------------------- END
