It's nice to know that she'll be remembered by others not just us. We buried her on Tuesday and I feel o.k. about it now because it's kind of like she can now move on. I never would have gotten through all of this without all the support from everyone and I am very grateful that this Web Site was created. Thank you again very much. We should also add FIV+ kitties to this list, as they too can live long symptom-free lives and deserve a decent place to live out those days. So when you folks call the rescue groups and shelters, ask whether they have FeLV+ homes and FIV+ homes. I know we will get a lot of "no" responses, but we need to try! I had a beautiful Maine Coon named "DeNiro" who passed away in August 1997 of FIV. He was with me for over 2 years, and I wouldn't have missed knowing his precious little soul for anything in the world. I put his photo and profile in my first newsletter and in my web site under 'In Memory Of'. For those of you with precious little FeLV+ or FIV+ kitties, may I suggest you get a photo of your kitty right away. I know it's sad when their time comes, but especially while they are robust and healthy, having a photo record of them will mean so much in the days ahead. I hold very dear the photos of those who are no longer with me, even though it sometimes makes me very sad to look at the pictures. But take a picture of them now. It will always be something to treasure. Date sent: Thu, 22 Jan 1998 15:05:27 -0700 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Does anyone know if there is a mailing list specific to Cancer in Pets? I have a cat with lymphosarcoma in her spine (too far advanced to treat, we've been to a specialist). She is actually doing pretty well these days, thank heavens. She's on Prednisone (5mg) twice a day, and I give her 1 capsule of Pau D'Arco sprinkled in her moist food twice a day. I can't tell if the Pau D'Arco has made any difference, but it was recommended by a vet for help with cancer patients. I would really like an update on all of the other kitties here. I was happy to hear about Meryln hanging in there! I also take many pictures of my cats. My family is always complaining that that's all I take pictures of.:) I have a little persian kitten that has a terrible sinus infection. I took her to the vet and he gave me some Ceta Drops. He said to use it for 5 days and if it didn't work to quit giving it. It didn't work at all and I asked him what to do and he said there was nothing short of surgery and then he couldn't guarantee that either so here I am not knowing what to do. I did start putting the interferon in his nose three days ago but haven't seen anything as of yet. Any suggestions???.........................Lynn(Stinker) -------------------------------------- Date sent: Thu, 22 Jan 1998 18:34:17 -0600 From: Stacy & Mike To: "felvtalk@MailingList.net" Subject: FeLV+ cat looking for home in Indiana Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Can anyone help? Here is Dianne's email addy. awarewolf1@aol.com Thanks, Stacy Grace & Gabby Posted by dianne on January 22, 1998 at 17:03:41: My neighbors moved to Texas two days ago. Yesterday I picked up their cat who was asleep on the front porch-waiting for "his people" to come home. I am disgusted and angry that they could do such a thing. The responsibility that they so easily abandoned has now become mine. I tested him for FIV and FELV and he IS FELV POSITIVE. I cannot in good conscience allow this cat to continue to roam the neighborhood knowing that he has FELV. I need help in finding a home for him, idealy with another FELV positive cat,or someone with no other cats. He must be kept strictly inside. If you can help,or know of someone who can, please let me know ASAP. We all know what my other option will have to be, and this is truely a tragic situation I live in Indpls, IN. The cat is a male, about 3 yrs,and an orange DSH-he is very sweet and loving, despite being somewhat neglected. There is alot of discharge, brownish, I think. The vet did look under the microscope. He is eatting and is alright other than that but he is having alot of problem breathing. At Christmas time the URI went through here! That was awful! I too, use the bathroom steam and that works. The vet sounded like it would never go away. I would be very interested in your homeopathic remedies. I haven't really tried any before. I did try it once for a kitty that had FIV, but he died before it had a chance to work. I would appreciate any suggestions....................Lynn(Stinker) -------------------------------------- Date sent: Thu, 22 Jan 1998 19:45:08 -0500 From: Andrew and Paula Sherrod To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Stinker Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Dear Lynn, Is it possible that Stinker threw a clot? Was he sort of wobbly? I'm just wondering because when our cat, Plush, threw a clot she was breathing very rapidly and was very sick. Maybe that was it? Hope Stinker is ok otherwise. Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net There is a no-kill shelter in West Virginia (near Maryland border) that takes in Felv and Fiv positive cats (as well as those missing legs, etc). It is called PAWS. I will forward info to this list within the next couple of days. The people who run the shelter are into holistic care (requested print outs of info from Jim et al's page). They do everything they can to care for sick kitties (and dogs). I didn't notice if he was wobbly, he wouldn't get up. He is doing alot better now. How is your kitty, Plush? -------------------------------------- Date sent: Thu, 22 Jan 1998 20:24:34 -0500 From: Andrew and Paula Sherrod To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Andrew and Paula-Stinker Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Sorry, I should have explained myself. Throwing a clot-sort of like a stroke. Plush (not felv pos-thank GOD!) just started breathing heavily one day and stumbling around. She was also licking her front paw and not putting any weight on it. The vet said she had a blood clot that lodged in her paw and then (I guess) dissolved (after we put her on some aspirin). This was six months ago but 2 weeks ago the same thing happened. We really thought she was dying because she was acting so sick and just breathing SOOO quickly. Sometimes cats get clots in their front or back legs-most of the time they are small but sometimes can cause paralysis. Thanks for asking about Plush-hope Stinker is feeling better. I couldn't be happier for you. As to the little one, please keep giving the interferon. One good drop per nostril per day. I worked for Merlin, but just to late I think. The infection had spread to his ears, eyes...you know the results. This must be gotten under control. Trust me, I know. You might try the new antibiotic Zithromax (azithromycin) It is a little expensive and depending on how bold you are, you may call your family Dr. and ask him if he has any samples of it. That's how I got mine. A friend works at the drs and she got me a bottle. I gave him his first dose yesterday. I know the protocal mentioned here has been once a week for 6 wks, but this is difficult because the stuff, once reconstituted, is only good for 2 wks max. The way it is written for babies, is 10mg/kg. on day one, then 5 mg/kg for the next four days. For cats it is 5mg/kg. Merlin got one fourth of a cc, or 10mg. I think I am going to give him another 10 mg tonight, then 5 mg for three days. I am playing it by ear here, but his infection was totally out of control. Numerous antibiotics didn't touch it. Forte in his ears didn't touch it. I think it was the homeopathic meds, my flushing and cleaning everyday and now the antibiotics. He also got his vitamins of course. two HUGE blobs of gunk had worked their way to the surface where I could reach them tonight. But your kittens isn't in his ears yet, probably, but try to get some of this antibiotic, weigh the little guy, and give it to him. Persians are more prone to sinus infections anyway aren't they? Anyway, I don't anybody or any cat to have to go thru what we went thru here. Merlin keeps fooling me. He was on the couch, after munching down some dry food and his tuna. I looked over and he was gone. I jumped up to see where he was and he was getting a drink. Turned my back for a couple of minutes, went looking for him again and couldn't find him! I freaked out. Ran all over the house, to the boxes, the bedrooms, under furniture. Finally I found him in one of his favorite spots. All the way into the bathroom linen closet. He is definetely moving faster! I still have great concern for him, but he brings a smile to my face every day with his determination. Oh, on the antibiotic. Once mixed with water, (and you can use tape water) it gives you 200mg per 5 ml. That gives you 40mg/ml. If the kitten only weighs say one kg. or 2.2lbs. then it will get 5mg or 0.2cc. You will need a syringe to measure it. Look for the .5 or one half cc mark and count down little lines until you get to two. Thinking good thoughts for you, stinker and the little one.
