In discussing possible solutions and holistic methods with him, he just turned a deaf ear and wanted me to do everything *his* way - ways that I have tried and don't work. Fortunately, I did find a new vet who is very open-minded and is willing to listen and learn and try new things. So, if you find yourself in a situation such as this, don't hesitate to look for another vet - one with whom you feel comfortable and who you can trust to do the best for your precious best friend(s) who can't speak for themselves! > -- Kathy G and the 3 Furries in Daytona Beach =^.^= - Rusty =^.^= - Smokey =^.^= - Money See us at: http://cgi.gambitsys.com/homey/webdoc5.htm The Cat: Mother Nature's Masterpiece! -------------------------------------- Date sent: Thu, 15 Jan 1998 08:28:45 -0500 From: Tani Scott Organization: Data Networks, Inc To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: name of antibiotic? Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Remember, though, not to extrapolate the kitty dosage from the child dosage. Zithromax is given once a WEEK to cats as it clears their system very slowly. The dosage is 5mg/kg of body weight once every 7 days. The problem with the liquid is the flavor - sweet cherry. Sounds good to us; the cats hate it. For adults I get the powder un-reconstituded and put it in gelatin capsules from the health food store. It works out to about two full capsules for a 10 pound cat. It's great stuff, though. Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi all, As always, first let me say thank you to everyone who kept my kitty in their thoughts and prayers over the past 24 hours -- it worked! After work, I rushed Lovejoy to the vet last night and darned if that little rascal didn't completely roll over and let her strum his tummy like a banjo while purring up a storm -- a privilege he's never accorded me! She palpatated everything and tried to get a urine sample through expression, but couldn't so gave me a small syringe to try and pick up some droplets off the floor, if it happened again just to check for any residual crystals that may have caused an initial blockage. However, after looking at him up close and personal, she thinks he's absolutely fine (i.e. no renal failure) and that the trickling is probably due to a side-effect of the antihistamine in that due to the high volume of pee that backed up it caused some neural stretching of his urethra so that he couldn't quite control his stream and/or, as Barb postulated, it may also have caused some smooth muscle relaxation too. In any case, she feels now that I've discontinued the meds and he is back to peeing daily that he will "tighten up" again and things will resolve themselves naturally. Just this am he was only a little bit wet back there and stopped to groom himself again immediately after I swabbed him with a wet washcloth. So, I am hopeful that maybe this will all resolve itself in a week or so. One of my new year's resolutions is to try and be more calm and centered while caring for Lovejoy, and when in doubt to check it out immediately instead of piffling around with phone calls and terrorizing mysefl with web surfing of cat health pages wherein some symptoms are so generically described that I can see them all in my guy at some point or other. For now, another saga in my boy's stay with me has ended and while I am a wreck :) he is still the same little plump, happy-go-lucky guy he's always been. Who could ask for more? Take care and thanks again for putting up with me. Your support really makes a tremendous difference in our lives, Olivia & Lovejoy -------------------------------------- From: "Carol Gentry" To: Subject: Belinda on Sasha Date sent: Thu, 15 Jan 1998 10:17:10 -0800 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Thanks Belinda for your help. The vets office found some in Wisconsin and they were going to overnight it to the vets office. It should be there today. The only thing that was a litle confusing was that they only had I think they said 10,000 units. I guess that's how it comes. I hope this is going to be enough. I'm not good at measurments. At any rate I told them I would pay for all the overnight shipping and whatever else was included so that problem is resolved. She is doing so much better I can't believe it. I got her some A/D kitty food and she has just been scarfing that down along with her dry food. Now she eats like a little pig. She still likes to eat her litter though. She is almost like her old self. It's so hard to believe that a simple blood transfusion could do this. When the Interferon comes in today, I have to take Sasha back with me and he is going to check her blood one more time. He said with the transfusion her CBC went up somewhat so he just wants to check it one more time. Anyway, thanks for all your help and I'll keep you posted. My guess is he is about late thirty's to early forty's. But he's doing what I want so I don't really care if he's ninty. (HA< HA) After talking to him yesterday when I went to pick her up, I think we have come to an understanding. I think part of his frustration is that he has had to deal with a lot of people that just didn't understand that this is a life threatening disease and it made it difficult for him. He says that he realized that I was informed and he said if Sasha was his, he would probably do the same thing. He's big on the clinical studies but I told him that they didn't seem to go very well because these kitties were taken away from any love and nurturing that they may have gotten in homes with people that loved them and wasn't that part of the healing process for any living thing? Well he didn't have to much to say on that one. At any rate she is doing very well and eating like a little pig. Her interferon should be in today so I'll start giving her that and we will see what happens. I'll keep you posted. I know this means that he can't be on Immunoregulin. Do you think that I should get him on Inteferon and/or Acemannan? Right now, he's on Pred and amoyxixillan(sp?). Would either of these affect these meds? Would it really be worth it? I'm more worried now about these tumors than the leukemia. Do either of these help with tumors? I'd appreciate letting me know your thoughts. thanks jenn -- Jennifer Crocus mailto:jcrocus@chubb.com The Chubb Corporation http://www.chubb.com/ -------------------------------------- Date sent: Thu, 15 Jan 1998 13:07:01 -0500 (EST) From: "Aaron B. You, sir, are free to leave this list and start one of your own where you can bash away all you like and hold liability for your own actions. I'd prefer to keep *this* list professional and positive. If you continue to post trash like what you've posted here today, I will remove you from this list myself- something that I really hoped I wouldn't have to do, but I will. If the interferon comes with 10,000 units in a thousand cc, that means there will be 10u in one cc, so to give her 30 u, you would have to give her 3 cc. There must be a run on the stuff if they are low on it. Mine came from the same place and it came 30 units in one cc. Just read the label on the front, it will tell you exactly how much is in the bottle and should tell you how much per cc. I know Jim has done more reading about Acemannan. I think if you have your vet call the number posted on our site for acemannan they will talk to him and give him info and answer his questions. They will not speak to a non-vet. That might be the best way to go. I know they have had some fair results with it and tumors. Thinking of you. Barb -------------------------------------- From: Newtanator Date sent: Thu, 15 Jan 1998 17:36:19 EST To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Vets in general Organization: AOL (http://www.aol.com) Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net All, Carol has a good point with the love and care we give our babies at home, vs lab animals that are stuck in a cage. I hadn't thought of that before. Also, I am sure now her vet is a good one. I recall the younger vet in my office, Dr. Black's associate telling me on a slow day that he wished all owners were like me. He said you can't believe how uncaring some owners are. He said some people bring in matted, filthy, half starved animals and complain about them. Wouldn't dream of spending a dime on cleaning them up and caring for them. Just dump them off like garbage to be put down, then trot off to get a new little baby for the kids to torment and forget about once it's not a cute baby anymore. He must have had a pretty bad day to be as down as he was. Most vets do what they do because they love animals and want to do what is best for them. There will always be the few that are stubborn and self centered. Those we just forget about and find a better one. Mine must see some pretty awful things. I recall once the entire office was nearly in tears because some foolish woman had waited to long to get her in labor dog in to them and the quick c-section only produced dead pups and they nearly lost the mother. Was the owner grateful they saved the mother? No, she was upset they didn't save the pups, "they were worth a lot of money." Her own greed and stupidity killed them. So we need to go a little easier on vets until we have walked in their shoes. No matter what, he always ate. It was what saved him. Now, he is beginning to refuse food. He is down to 5 lbs. He was 6 at his best. As frightened as I am of steriods, they do induce appetite and I have read that some of you have used them to help your cats produce RBC's. I have some 5 mg. Prednisone on hand. What dose have you been giving? I must do something to try and get him to eat or all is lost. He has been thru so much, I don't want to lose him now.
