I believe they took out as much as they could, but not the whole thing. I know what you mean about worrying everytime Merlin does one little thing. It's like we're walking on eggshells and hoping that none of them break. I admire you for your patience with Merlin. I don't know if my heart could take such a thing. We went and picked her up from the vet today and she is like her old self. The blood transfusion really made a difference. They have ordered the interferon and will be at their office by tomorrow. He also has her on an antibiotic which she gets twice a day and I got her some A/D food which she can now eat on her own. I will tell you all that he thinks this web site is a little dangerous because he feels that it gives false hope to people concerning FELV+ kitties and he says that most of the people he sees are not very informed . Well I told him if it wouldn't have been for everyone on here I probably would have just fallen apart and possibly just given up. He did say that most people just wouldn't do what I am doing and I told him that they would if they were given the same information. I said that's the purpose of this site. I told him that since this is a life threatning disease, what's the difference? Isn't this what vets have been complaining about for years? Irresponsible pet owners? Now there is a whole web site of responsible owners and they still don't like it. I said you can't have it both ways. At any rate the interferon has been ordered and he is going to continue to check her blood. If she needs another transfusion I told him I have three more at home, so not to worry. Now one thing I need to find out. He is recommending 1 cc of interferon and everyone else seems to use 3cc. Which do you all think is best? Please let me know. Thanks again from all of you and I'll keep you posted. Carol from Vancouver --------------------------------------- From: "phaedrus" To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Date sent: Wed, 14 Jan 1998 16:36:19 +0000 Subject: Before any vet bashing starts Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hello everyone, I just want to remind everyone that out and out vet bashing is not allowed here. I say this because I don't want people to start trashing Carol Gentry's vet for his harsh and somewhat uninformed words. To a point, he may be correct by pointing out that this list could provide false hope to certain people. We are having quite a number of successes at the moment, but, as we all know, not every kitty will react positively to these treatments- a sad fact, but a reality. Another reason why I don't want to engage in vet bashing here is because I don't know everyone on this list, and there may actually be vets and/or researchers lurking here. The very last thing I want to do is alienate those folks and drive them away. I certainly don't mind when people here air their frustrations about uninformed and uncooperative vets (I do my share of that as well) as Carol has done, but I don't think it's appropriate for people to start posting things like "Carol, your vet's an idiot" or similar things. As I've been told many times, "you can't educate someone by trashing them." Let's keep the hopeful and constructive aspects of these issues going- that's where our strength as a group belongs. I'd just posted something similar to the group about this very idea. We have alot of work ahead of us to get the word out about FeLV and these treatments, and the discussions on this list seem to be doing just that. BTW: Steve, the vet that did Vyvyan such a disservice is only in his mid 40's, so you may want to lower your numbers a bit. Take care, and best wishes to all and their furries. Some of the other mailing lists I've belonged to consider it polite to introduce oneself, so I will do that now. My name is Jean Wells. I live in South Carolina and I have five FeLV cats who are the light of my life. (you can see them at www.shack.org/wellsj/mostcats.htm ) So far, they do ok, mostly healthy, tho anything one catches, everyone catches. We spent a fair amount of time taking antibiotics for URI's last winter, but this year they haven't been nearly so sick. Partly luck, partly that when my vet found out I like the house fairly cold, she immediately ordered me to turn the thermastat to at least 68 and to keep an electric blanket running all the time so they would never get chilled, and maybe the L-Lysine they started getting with their food when one of the other vets in that practice heard somewhere it was beneficial for FeLV + cats. I did lose one of the family ( a mother and her 5 kittens) when he went into leukemic crisis last fall. It was sudden and devastating and out of control in a matter of days. I'm really happy to find this group. My friends are supportive (especially the cat lovers), but I don't think any one really understands. This is the only "public" announcement I've made about this archive, so no one need worry about "outsiders" reading these posts. You can find this archive at: http://www.fortunecity.com/skyscraper/sterling/20/archive.html They are arranged by day (sometimes as multiple parts), and they are saved in text format- except for the indexing page, of course. If you'd like to search through past mail for a specific topic, I know that Netscape users can use the "ctrl-F" (that's the "control" button and the letter F held down together) to search each archive- I'm not sure how Microsoft or AOL accomplishes this. Now, for my idea about another project. I would like to know if anyone is interested in sumarizing some of the threads we've been discussing for an on-line FeLV newsletter that we could set up weekly, monthly, etc.? Topics to be sumarized could include discussion of obtaining and administering Interferon, discussions of some of the secondary complications that FeLV kitties are experiencing such as URI's, fungi, and eating/drinking/litterbox habit changes. And, of course, I think the topic of priority is the remarkable comeback made by some of the kitties on the list. If anyone is interested in helping me with this project, please email me privately at: phaedrus@ctnet.net with your ideas and areas that you'd like to cover. Of course, we'll preview these newsletters on the list, so that everyone here has a say about its content. Take care, and let me know what y'all think. Talk to you soon. I do not know what to do. About 3 years ago I adopted a beautiful cat shadow from the Human Society. She was my first cat and I really did not know much about felines. I have moved to Phoenix and two outdoor cats have found me. I started putting food out for them and especially Zeus has captured my heart. I took Zeus and his lover Patches to the vet to be to be spaded and the vet told me that Zeus had feline leukemia and was going to kill him (I do not mess around and say put to sleep. It is killing!) if I did not promise to keep Zeus indoors. My own cat Shadow tested negative and I understand that the vaccine is only 85 percent effective. I put an ad in the Phoenix newspaper, asked every human being I knew and no one wanted a feline leukemia cat. Zeus is totally healthy at this time. Patches Zeus's significant other tested negative. I have returned Zeus to her outside environment and she seems to be doing fine. What kind of a rish would I be pu! tting my own cat Shadow in if I took in Zeus? Zeus no longer fights and I understand the main way the disease is spread is from fighting.

Sorry about the length of this message but I am really concerned about Zeus who I have fallen for. I also called every shelter in Phoenix and all said they would kill him since he is feline leukemia positive.

Please help.

I don't feel our site gives anyone false hope. It clearly states, in large letters, "There is no known cure for Feline Leukemia". Most of us have already found that out the hard way. As far as I know, we are all adults, in touch with the reality of the situation with our cats. I know I am. Merlin is walking a very fine line right now. When I talked about Carols vet, I spoke in generalities, including vets and MD's. Their ego's ARE a big part of the problem. Carol's vet next patient, will probably benefit from his experience with her. He is now more informed and can appear to his next client to be well informed and knowledgeable. But to Carol, well, it disturbed him that a "lay person" knew something he didn't. It actually is a very good sign for him that he took the time to go to our site and check it out. That means there is hope for him. He was curious enough about this very tenacious cat owner who came in with suggestions then demands concerning the treatments for her cat to see what all the fuss was about. He is probably a keeper. But when you run into one who shows no interest nor concern, it is time to move on. Just as with md's there are good vets and bad ones. Fortunately, there are more good than bad. Bad does not mean uninformed. Bad means, doesn't care. Mine was uninformed but does whatever I ask of him, that is within his power to do. In the process, he is learning and we have a very good relationship. I agree, there should be no personal attacks. It is up to the person dealing with a particular vet to decide if they want to stay with them or find another. So, mostly, I agree, but sometimes a person needs to vent their frustrations and that is part of what we are here for. But we should keep statements general.
