It's in a large bottle and already mixed. I poured some in a smaller bottle for ease in handling. The vet gives the immunoregulin shots twice a week. This is the first week for their shots. They are doing great. No visible side effects. They sleep a bit after the shots. They are eating well and are very active. SOmetimes too active at 3 a.m.:-) Do you want the address and phone number for the interferon? Many have egos that would fill the ocean and they DON'T like patients coming in an having a handle on something they don't. They are brilliant and you are stupid. Do what they say and they are happy. Now they are not ALL like that, thank goodness.two) Many of these treatments have come about since all the research on AIDS has been going on. Many of them have not kept up and the schooling they had was, there is no hope for felv and that's that. The younger ones seem a little more open minded about it. The name of the antibiotic, tho I havent' used it, just recently heard about it, is Azithromycin. once a week for six weeks. I have the number for Island Phamacy Services in Woodruff, Wisconsin. I'm going to be doing the phoning so he really doesn't have any excuses. The number I have for the ImmunoRegulin is 1-888-282-8381. I have no idea where this is but I need to find somewhere closer. Someone found a place in Seattle but they order out of somewhere else so that's not to much faster. Thanks for the help. Please let me know. Any number you can get me that might be closer will help. I'm going to be doing the phoning so the vet will know the fastest place to get it from. This way there won't be any excuses. I do have a questions though. On the ImmunoRegulin, is this given orally or through injections? If it's orally or can be, I can do it myself. Let me know. I'm going to be asking Barb too. Thanks for your help. Is this one given orally or through injections? How much of the Interferon should I have him order and is this the one that comes pre-mixed? Thanks for your scenario about why vets are so stubborn and I totally agree but it's time for me to educate this one and Sasha's regular vet also. Please let me know on the drugs, once again. I want to get this right. He is using his box but it seems like he still has droplets flowing as he exits the box that he's unaware of. Has anyone else ever had this kind of side affect from giving an antihistamine such as Chlorpheniramine? I was giving my boy this for his upper respiratory infection until 2 days ago, when the vet said to stop because of the peeing problems. If you've had experience with this, how long will it take for the drug to fade from his system? Should I be worried about possible kidney damage? This same vet gave me some interferon but said nothing about keeping it refrigerated, nor does its bottle say so. Should I have been refrigerating it, and if so, should I throw the remainder away? HELP and Thanks, Olivia --------------------------------------- From: "AZ-HART" To: Subject: Re: scabs Date sent: Wed, 14 Jan 1998 09:42:29 -0700 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net The problem with scabs could be one of these things: 1) if it's near the ears, of course, check inside for ear mites (dark "coffee ground" looking bits). 2) sometimes cats get skin reactions that causes their hair to "go bald" in places and becomes terribly itchy. I had this happen last summer to many cats at one time, just around the time I switched the A/C on for the season. The vet checked several of the afflicated kitties, and it wasn't ringworm or any identifiable problem. She gave me Gentocin to spray on the sore patches, but I found that a medicated shampoo cleared it right up. Sometimes they get some kind of skin irritation, and a medicated bath will do the trick. 3) Unfortunately, ringworm does not always have that "circular" pattern we are told to look for. I had a kitten last year that had bald patches (no scabs) above her eyes, and when I took her in to be spayed, the vet scanned the bald patches with the special black liight they use to check for ringworm (which glows under that black light), and ringworm it was. A medicated (from your vet) shampoo will probably do the trick whatever irritation it may be. I would strongly recommend DERMAZOLE shampoo and RESIZOLE Leave-On Conditioner. These are excellent products and you'll see results quickly. SHAMPOO AND LEAVE-ON CONDITIONER: 1) Thoroughly shampoo the kitty with DERMAZOLE shampoo. If you do this right away, the skin irritation begins to subside almost right away and the fur will start to grow back sooner. My vet told me that you can shampoo every day, but I don't like to, as it's a bit harsh to shampoo any animal that often. A few times a week would be good. Rinse well and dry well. 2) Follow each medicated Dermazone Shampoo with a RESIZOLE Leave-On Conditioner. Rub it all over down into the skin. Don't rinse this out, it is meant to be left in. LOTION (if it is ringworm): 3) On the days you don't shampoo, apply a good coating of CONOFITE drops to each affected area, once a day until there are no scaley patches or until the fur begins to grow back thickly. If the fur is still spotty and thin or the skin area is bare, keep applying a drop of CONOFITE to each area, and rub around to cover. The products I use are: DERMAZOLE (Miconazole 2% Shampoo) by Allerderm RESIZOLE (Miconazole 2% Leave-On Conditioner) by Virbac Inc. PS I took my Chloe off the interferon this past week. per vet's instructions after about 6 months of treatment every third day, and did not like what I saw at all. The severe anemia returned, even though appetite was healthy. Clearly, she was not manufacturing red blood cells. She is back on the interferon as of Monday, and seemed normal again this AM. -- Steve --------------------------------------- Date sent: Wed, 14 Jan 1998 10:12:52 -0600 (CST) From: "Nancy A. Schmall" To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Sasha Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Carol, I can't believe the bad luck you are having in vets--how frustrating! I think it was smart to have Sasha transfused and bless your heart for going all the way back home for a donor! ESPECIALLY in the rotten weather you're having! I am glad you are insisting on using the drugs that so many of us are using. I can't believe that vet from Texas saying she hasn't had much luck--does she live in a vacuum? I would encourage you too, once you've started on the drugs to keep looking for a more knowledgeable vet--(also, Immunoregulin works best if it is administered in a vein which is best done by a vet or someone schooled in veterinary procedure)I know it's a pain, but in the end it will be worth it. As far as my opinion goes, just the mere fact that your vet didn't have any interferon on hand makes me wonder as to his "updated knowledge of treatments." As far as steroids go and this again is my opinion. . . I think they can do a lot of good, especially in a temporary situation. For example, my Jake was extremely anemic, his red blood cells were being constantly destroyed, and he was not reproducing new ones. He was put on a dose of prednisone (and interferon and immunoregulin) until his blood work looked better. Because he has improved so much, we are reducing the prednisone dose and hopefully in time can take him off entirely. I also know of some cats that have had to stay on it the rest of their lives to maintain good health. It does have the side effect of suppressing the immune system, but I think used temporarily, it can do a lot of good. I think as far as using it forever, the owner has to weigh the consequences and decide for herself. Good luck to you and Sasha--you are in my thoughts! And thanks from all the catworld for being so brave and assertive in getting done what you've you chosen to do! So, tonight at 5 pm, I am taking him in for blood tests and a urinalysis to see what's what. Fortunately, he is not in any pain at present. Unfortunately, by the time any sx start to show, I'm told it usually means a cat has lost over 70% of renal (kidney) function. My heart is very heavy and I ask all of you to keep Lovejoy in your thoughts and prayers over the next 48 hours. I should know what's really going on by then.
