I originally posted about two FeLV+ cats looking for homes yesterday. I gave the email addy to Marina to post about the cat in Califorina without realizing she could not post a message with out being a member. If you can help, you might want to email her directly. But I wanted to pass along my favorite. I used Azithromycin on one of my older cats whose nose ran constantly. He wheezed when he breathed. For a couple of years we tried antibiotics of various types. No reponse. I took him to Gainesville for hundreds of dollars of tests. Their recommendation was $1000 surgery. I couldn't afford that for a non-life-threatening problem. So I tried Azithromycin once a week for 6 weeks. He has been drip-free for nine months. I have also used this for small kittens with Chlamydia. But it seems to be especially good for chronic problems. If anyone needs specifics to give their vet to get the prescription, let me know. My vet is willing to try new things, but he has to be convinced. I'm glad I could convince him about this. I'm the one with the FIV positive cat (Tigger) that has chronic upper res. problems. I have FINALLY convinced my vet to give me a prescription for interferon....her concern was that she would kill the cat. Okay, it's comning in tomorrow (Wed) and it's 30 million units.....which means it needs to be diluted out. I also need to know how to store what's left.....I seem to remember someone talking about freezing it? My veterinary is very concerned about diluting it out to the right proportions, she even called Purdue University (we're in Indiana) they had no clue about using it nasally, or even using it to treat upper respiratory problems! Any and all help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance. If you check our site at www.angelfire.com/il/felv/ there is a company that will pre mix it for you at the proper dose. If that is not an option, since the other is ordered, I would recomend taking to a pharmacist or even a hospital and ask, beg borrow whatever, to mix it for you in the proper dose which is 30u a cc. There are prob others out there who have mixed it, with the help of their vets. It can be done, but you must know how to figure the proper amount. Good luck, let me know if you need help with the calculations and if it is really 30million. Thanks to all of your opinions and sharing, I decided to just do it. My vet is giving me a cheaper rate as he does the humane society so I can just about handle it. He takes post dated checks.:) Thanks so much as sometimes I can be pretty stubborn. He also said that giving the immunoregulin to the non-systematic kitties sometimes reverses the positive. I started my "healthy" leukemia kitty this evening on the immunoregulin. I can't tell you how much better I feel. Maybe I have just felt so guilty but now I at least know I am doing something. My vet also said that the interferon probably wouldn't do any good for the healthy leukemia cats. I have a couple of questions to ask. Should I take in my kitties that have been tested negative because they have been exposed? And, I have a kitten with a sinus infection. Would the interferon help that? Again, I want to thank all of you!.......................Lynn(Stinker) -------------------------------------- From: "Carol Gentry" To: Subject: Sasha Date sent: Tue, 13 Jan 1998 18:29:52 -0800 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Well I just got off the phone with the vet and Sasha made it through the transfusion just fine. My other car CC is a little wigged out. He was the blood donor. The vet took some blood from her before and after the transfusion and is having her CBC checked again. He talked to me about taking a bone marrow test but he doesn't know yet. Earlier I told Barb that I was going to become a b---- until I got some Interferon from him. Well, I told him regardless of how it turns out, I want the Interferon. He doesn't have it but I did give him all the info about where to order it from and he said to remind him first thing in the morning. Would any of you who have a number please repeat this for me. The one I have is Island Pharmacy Services in Wisconsin but maybe there is one closer. Please let me know ASAP. Also your opinion about ImmunoRegulin, again. I don't know if I should try both or just go with the Interferon. He did mention Steroids but he did say that would break down her immune system more but mayber that until the interferon gets here. Please give me feedback. How does he know, if he has never tried it? Maybe it will help and maybe it won't, but if never tried, you will never know. Sasha is your cat and your friend. She deserves every chance. You go for it! Thinking of you and Sasha. They wre closed when I called but the guy who answered the phone said they can get interferon, he just didn't know from where. I know my Vet. ordered some immunoregalin for us I believe from out of Seattle, but shes gone too. I will try calling her in the morning, maybe your Vet. can call the 800 # in the meantime, might be the same place. Steroids can totally change your cat's personality. My sweetie became the cat from H---! The minute I took her off she become my baby again. That's my opinion. Anxoius to hear how others feel. I am not a big fan of them in felv cats, BUT, some people, using them in very small doses with the ImmunoRegulin, say they have had good results. I will defer that one to Jim. I would start on the ImmunoRegulin tho. The company will send it overnight, they did for me. When ordering the interferon, have them UPS it, like rapid delivery or something. It may cost a little more, but prob worth it. Once you have it, keep it in the fridge and you can work out a way to freeze the excess if your vet doesn't want it. Interferon drops will help the sinus infection and I just read of a antibiotic someone used that cleared up their cats chronic infection. Might want to try both or just the antibiotic. Barb PS. let us know asap how all the tests come out. It will seem like a lifetime waiting to see it that ugly blue dot shows up, I know. -------------------------------------- From: Newtanator Date sent: Tue, 13 Jan 1998 23:17:29 EST To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Interferon dosage/nasal Organization: AOL (http://www.aol.com) Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Cheri, One cc and one ML are the same thing. Look at the label on the bottle. I hope it reads 1000ml/30units per ml or cc. Your cat should get one cc/ml a day. The interferon is in units and there should be 30 units in one cc. Barb -------------------------------------- From: "Lynn Stickels" To: "felvtalk" Subject: name of antibiotic? Date sent: Tue, 13 Jan 1998 21:30:10 -0800 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net I am giving my kitty, Clover, Cefa Drops for her chronic sinus infection. You mentioned another one. What is it? My vet said that this infection was almost impossible to cure, even with surgery, which by the way would be way beyond thinking about. She is otherwise healthy. She is a persian kitty. She doesn't hardly have a nose!:) He said that didn't make any difference. Anyway, if you could tell me the name of that antibiotic, I will imform my vet. She just started on this stuff, so I will wait and see how it works. Also, would interferon help, do you think?..........Lynn(Stinker) -------------------------------------- From: "Lynn Stickels" To: "felvtalk" Subject: Sasha and interferon Date sent: Tue, 13 Jan 1998 21:38:14 -0800 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Carol, I know how frustrated you must feel about not getting the help you need. I am very lucky in that my vet doesn't mind learning new things. I have given him many things from this site and others to get what I need. I can get the interferon very easily and what I wanted to say to you is that if you can't get it where you are, I will get it for you. My vet puts the interferon in little bottles for me to freeze. The cost isn't real expensive. I would have to look it up. If I can help you and Sasha in anyway, I will be happy to.:); Just let me know. I can also get the immunoregulin for you if needed.................Lynn(Stinker) -------------------------------------- From: "Carol Gentry" To: Subject: Re: Sasha Date sent: Tue, 13 Jan 1998 23:41:32 -0800 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Cheri- If you use the Interferon, how are you mixing it and where did you get it? My understanding is the immunoregulin has to be given intraveniously (?) and I'm not sure about that. Sasha's vet doesn't have that one either. Let me know. Thanks; Carol from Vancouver -------------------------------------- From: "Carol Gentry" To: Subject: Barb Date sent: Tue, 13 Jan 1998 23:55:37 -0800 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Thanks for the info but this is the one I had. I was hoping that maybe there was a supply house closer so I could get it quicker. I did some info about a supply house in Seattle so I may try them tomorrow. I think if I do the phoning and get the info then the vet has no choice. He did say that if that's what I want it was o.k. by him. You know what I really don't get? Why are they all so stubborn? If we as owners are willing to spend the money and the time to do whatever is necessary, why can't they just go along. It would be quite a feather in their caps and really good advertising. I am going to give him this web site address and some of the others I have and tell him he needs to take a look. Anyway thanks again and I'll keep you posted.
